We loved the garden for our dog. Great Views! The woodburner was needed on our first night. It warmed the cottage up a treat. The cottage was so nice we have booked again for next year. Your wine is delicious and the bottle will be returned next year. A great break away, beware of very narrow lanes to the property though. Shops, River Otter, Pubs, and of course the sea all less than 12 minutes away.

We did find the sofa and chair a little low [in our early 60's but both have issues with our back!],kitchen well kitted out but we did miss not having the convenience of a microwave! Bedroom spacious and we did find the bed very comfortable, there is a noticable uneven floor which is more obvious when stepping out of the bathroom, but given the age of the property, this is probably to be expected and was not a major issue once we had become aware of it!

Nicki and Ben have achieved what in our book is perfection, they have thought of everything, and the cottage is spotless in every respect. The parking is the only fly in the ointment, it's a very short walk from the parking pull off, down a slight slope in the lane to the front garden gate, then an upward slope to the patio and front door, about 3 mins for you fitter ones and about 6 mins for us not so fit ones. But trust us - when you get to the patio you get your first WOW - the view. Then when you enter the cottage you get your second WOW ! it's even better than the pictures, and when you climb the 10 stair treads to the bedroom and shower room you get your third WOW ! • "The property was further out of Ottery St."

Mary than we would have liked. When we booked the address was given as Ottery St. Mary. The cottage was in a quiet location with lovely views. We were surprised that given the cottage is for 2 people there was only one enormous saucepan and an enormous frying pan. A smaller pan would have been more practical especially as there wasn't a microwave. If we had wanted to cook a few beans or an egg this would have been impossible.

Thank you for your feedback. The address of the cottage is Ottery St Mary as that is the nearest postal town. We are less than 2 miles from the town centre and the exact location is shown on the map on the listing at the time of booking. We're sorry you felt like the property would be nearer to the town but The Hideaway is advertised as a rural property. We appreciate a small frying pan would be a useful addition so will be adding one, there are however three saucepans (a standard set of small/medium/large) which we feel is adequate. We would also like to add a microwave but there just isn't room in the kitchen unfortunately. Property Owner

  • "The Hideaway is a lovely real old fashioned cottage."

We booked it for a quiet break and we weren’t disappointed. Sure we were there in February and the roads and surrounding towns/villages were quiet, which was perfect for us. The cottage was clean and comfortable. As others have mentioned there are low beams but at 6’ 2” tall, I was more than prepared to duck as necessary. The living area was more than big enough for two. There’s a log fire and if it’s cold you will go through logs very quickly. As a bonus the cottage has central heating radiators, which didn’t expect. There’s no way to control the timings of the central heating as the controls, I believe, are located in the main house. For us this wasn’t a problem. The bedroom was very spacious with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was of a decent size but as there’s a sloping ceiling, for those of us who are tall, you’ll need to watch your head! The kitchen is small but fine for the 2 of us. There’s no microwave as there’s no room to put in a microwave. The fridge is small and it got full really quickly but again there’s no space for a bigger fridge. The tv is small and somewhat dated, lacking the connectivity to steaming devices. The internet is painfully slow. Speed tests show download speeds to be no more than 2Mbs, reminding me of internet speeds of 20 yrs ago! However, BT can only offer this speed because of its remoteness. We were well prepared as we had downloaded more films/ tv programs before we set off from home. Just one other point on the internet, the router wasn’t in the cottage so it wasn’t possible to hard wire to it. I think the router was in the main house, so the owner and us were sharing the small bandwidth. Nicki, the host, was very friendly and helpful. We really loved the cottage and would definitely go back again.

Lived up to expectations. As our stay was leading up to Christmas we were welcomed with mince pies and lovely festive decorations .Rather than dreading the long evenings we embraced the opportunity to relax in front of the very efficient log burner. This was our first holiday with our rescue dog and she loved it . The location was nice and quiet with the garden for her to sniff around. NB the garden is not totally secure so we used a long line for her. We were lucky with the weather it was very mild. The lane leading to the cottage is narrow and steep in parts so if the conditions are frosty/icy it would be a challenging drive if you dont have a 4 x4 .

  • "What a lovely little cottage!"

It lives up to its name, as it is tucked away down some narrow roads. On arrival you are met with a cosy cottage with a beautiful view from the garden. Warm welcome from the owners who live next door. Inside we were welcomed with fresh flowers and a lovely jar of jam for us, doggy treats for our pooch, which was a nice touch. Large lounge with sofa and chair (which look fantastic but not very comfy, I’m being really picky here but that’s why I gave a little less rating on comfort). The best part is the wood burner, easy to use, and makes the cottage glow! Fantastic especially on the chilly autumn evenings. The kitchen is small but it has everything to cook a meal quite happily (we did). The big bedroom is found upstairs. Lovely room, king sized bed I think. Bathroom had a nice shower, no bath. All in all the cottage was presented very well, clean and tidy. We took the dog on some great walks near by on east hill and fire beacon. Fantastic on a crisp autumn morning, leaves crunching underfoot. Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary really close by, and easy to get to. We would definitely recommend this little hideaway cottage. Our test is ‘would we go again?’ Yes we would, love, love, loved it.

The dark skies were amazing, we've not seen so many stars for a long time. We found the cottage very comfortable and spotlessly clean. It had everything we needed for our stay. The log burner was the icing on the cake. We very much enjoyed a glass of wine and a good book curled up in front of the fire in the evening. It's a shame we holidayed in winter as the garden was lovely and we would have been very happy sitting outside in the sun!! It's nice to know that the owners are just next door and we found them very helpful and friendly. The only comment I would make is that the stairs are quite steep and each step is quite high. However, the bannister is very strong to hold on to, and so they didn't present us with any problems. We really hope to book the cottage again for next year. It is a very steep hill to get to the car. Not suitable for people with disabilities and older people. The picture shows a lovely big pond but that belongs to the owners and you cant walk round it, also the garden at the end is very steep and the land where you can walk is just very rough ground. I would say ok for young people but not for older

Thank you for your feedback. We genuinely hope all our guests have an enjoyable stay so it was disappointing to read that you weren't happy. The lanes in rural Devon do tend to be narrower than in more built up areas, some say it's what adds to the charm of holidaying somewhere such as Devon or Cornwall. Regarding the parking, unfortunately there wasn't room to put in a separate driveway, but there is private parking approximately 25 yards from the garden gate, up a gentle incline. The pond you refer to is on our land, but the photos do show it as being the other side of the garden fence. We thought it was better to provide guests with a view rather than put a high fence up. However, we do let people walk in our field, in addition to the many walks from the doorstep. Although, the grass is mowed regularly, it's not bowling green flat, as it's a field. Once again I'm sorry the property wasn't suited to you, but we do feel the description and photo's accurately describe the cottage Property Owner
