What guests are saying
Myself and three friends stayed at Lavender Cottage for a couple of nights diring a short walking holiday on the South West coastal path.
This is our second stay here, so we must like it! It was perfect for us, four comfortable bedrooms (although one of us drew the short straw and ended up in the bunk bed) and really has evrything we need. We eat out mostly, but the kitchen easily provided a cooked breakfast each day. Yes, the stairs are narrow and steep - not a problem if taken with care. The location is fabulous, an easy walk into Lyme (heading downhill) and just around the corner from Lyme's Banksy - although you do have to look quite hard to make it out these days. Another low hassle and perfect break. Many thanks!
Lavender Cottage is situated on a steep lane in the centre of Lyme Regis.
Car access is not possible even for unloading. However, a car is not essential. The bus from Axminster Station stops near the top of the lane. There are bus services to Bridport, West Bay, and Seaton. We walked from Lyme Regis to West Bay along the Southwest Coastal Path (which runs through Lyme Regis) and caught buses back. There are other walks that can be done without a car. Tesco is only a few hundred yards away on the main street. The cottage needs up to date instructions on how to use the central heating. As noted in a previous review, the mattress in the first-floor bedroom is past its best. The sofa in the living room is also past its best and could be replaced or at least cleaned. There is only one shower. The kitchen is well-equipped but working surface area very small. For us, it doesn’t score as well as other Sykes Cottages. Most now provide a “welcome pack” of a carton of milk and some teabags and /or coffee and biscuits – nice to have on arrival. Some even provide a bottle of wine. Most provide consumables such as washing up liquid. We thank the Sykes out-of-ours service for prompt responses. We had to call them twice, once after the gas supply went off, and again when there was water dripping from the kitchen ceiling. The water leak happened from an over-flowing toilet cistern after the water supply was restored with a surge after the supply to much of the old town failed after a mains pipe burst. The museum is good and we enjoyed a guided tour of the town.
We are a family of 5 who stayed here in September 2025.
The cottage is delightful and beautiful, and we enjoyed staying there. The location is excellent and allowed us to access all that Lyme Regis has to offer on foot. Some points to note: the long stay carpark on Hill Rd is around £80 for 7 days parking. You can hear each other throughout the cottage, so don’t expect any privacy in the bedroom or bathroom. There were no purple refuse bags left for us, so we were unable to follow the instructions for putting out our rubbish. We requested some purple bags by phone on the Thursday, but these were not delivered to us. In the end, we found the previous guests’ rubbish outside in the back garden, in the gull proof sack, and we therefore put this outside the front of the cottage for the Friday collection. It was unclear what to do with recycling or where to put it, so we left a separate carrier bag with our recycling. The instructions for recycling and waste should be made clearer if possible. The wi-fi did not work very well. Other than these points the cottage is well appointed and a lovely place to stay.
