  • "Rycross Farm Cottage is a tranquil and relaxing location for a break."

The owners are very friendly and helpful and are nearby, but not intrusive. I arrived at dusk, and a welcoming light had been left on which made me smile. The cottage is bright and warm and the kitchen, although small, is very well equipped. Beds are comfy and broadband reliable. The views across the countryside are spectacular and I saw birds of prey and a couple of deer in the garden. There is also outside seating for visits with better weather. If the peace and quiet gets too much, the historic and busting town of Shaftesbury with its independent shops and Thursday market is only a few moments drive away. There is also a Tesco and a soon to be opened Lidl in town. For those coming from the south, if you find your way to the A350 from Blandford Forum and head north, you will reach a place called Cann. Pass straight through and as you get to the point where the 30mph returns to 40mph, indicate left and take that first turn which is almost on top of the speed limit sign. Rycross Farm isn't signposted from this direction and, if you miss the turn , it's probably safest to carry on to the first Shaftesbury roundabout and come back. This was my first post-pandemic cottage holiday and, if anyone is concerned about doing the same, you can choose this venue with confidence. It is clean and obviously loved. You can be as isolated or as gregarious as you choose. I can't wait to go back.

  • "Accommodation really nice & the gardens beautiful."

A little close to the owners property to afford full privacy. Would benefit from a heated towel rail as towels damp when no heating on. Disappointed there was no wildlife & & very few birds but obviously that’s no ones fault, though the owners field was very overgrown so make have played a part. A comfortable stay in a lovely part of the country

  • "A lovely cottage, in a very tranquil position where we got to see muntjac and other wildlife most mornings through the bedroom window, which was a nice surprise."

Facilities in the cottage were good, the kitchen although compact, was very well equipped with plenty of utensils, pans and baking trays, so there is no need to worry about taking those scissors, bottle opener or anything else from home! We had no problems with the shower as previously commented upon. Just turn the shower thermostatic valve to its hottest temperature and its warm in less than a minute, then adjust to suit. We all slept well and the beds were super comfy, with plenty of storage space for our clothes and belongings. Nearby, there were plenty of nice shops, pubs, cafes and a large Tesco in Shaftesbury. We would recommend Ecco Gelato at the top of Gold Hill for the best ice cream and coffee, and with a grassed park area and benches, you can enjoy your ice cream whilst indulging upon the amazing views of Dorset. The cottage is in an ideal position for visiting Dorset and the owners are very welcoming.

  • "Lovely property with fantastic views."

It’s a shame the views down the valley can only be seen when standing up in the property. If the hedges were removed or lowered then the views would be uninterrupted. It would be helpful if the instructions on finding the property includes arrival from the Blandford direction with a sign for the farm that is visible. The cottage is in a great position just outside the impressive town of Shaftesbury. We had a great holiday in this wonderful part of the country.

  • "The cottage was in a lovely picturesque setting."

The days were spent in a very stressful way searching for a rental in the area, and it was so nice to come back to this quiet, peaceful place. It's close to a supermarket and the lovely town of Shaftsebury . The owners are very friendly and helpful. The only thing that was a bit of a hiccup was the length of time it took for the shower to warm up. This not withstanding we'll be back

  • "The long drive off the main road to the property needs some maintenance, we have a small car and the ruts developing at the top of the drive caused our car to catch the centre of the track if we did not drive really slow."

Thank you for your feedback. The owner advises that there is major refurbishment currently going on at the main house and this is why the diary for Ryecross Farm Cottage is currently unavailable. All works will be finished by June 20019 and the drive will be completely resurfaced and we are looking forward to showing this to you in new photographs closer to the time. Property Owner

  • "There was no shop in half mile distance of the cottage as expected from the details."

The farm was stated as non working but work was going on so there was noise at times. There was only one toilet roll to last all week. There were no proper cleaning scrubs for the pots and pans just a dish cloth. There were no toiletries supplied. Other cottages we have used through your site have been much better equipped. There was no information on walks etc around the cottage just the leaflets for major attractions. Having said all that the bed was comfortable as was the sofa and chairs in the lounge.

About the location

Salisbury 21 miles; Bath 30 miles.

One of Dorset’s prettiest and most historic towns, Shaftesbury is perched on a spur of rolling green hills, and the views in all directions are without comparison. Lush green meadows, woodland glades and outstanding architecture are all within a short walk. One of the best vantage points is from Gold Hill (Ridley Scott's famous Hovis advert was filmed here) with its quaint, cobbled and very steep street. Visit the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey (a place of great pilgrimage from the 11th century) or navigate the intricate and ancient lanes. Bath, Salisbury and Sherborne are all under an hour away, or drive through the stunning countryside of Blackmoor Vale down to the coast at Poole, Bournemouth and Weymouth. A beautiful area, that still carries the flavour of the very best of the English countryside.
