What guests are saying
Very comfortable and cosy cottage with all necessary kitchen equipment etc.
Great location for exploring east Dorset which has fantastic walks which we enjoyed with our two dogs. No pub / restaurant in the village but we found several within a 5 mile mile radius, all of which were happy to accommodate the dogs. The cottage is an old gate house and so is located beside the road through the village so be prepared for some, relatively light, traffic noise
A thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing stay.
We found the Lodge very comfortable and convenient, with a well-appointed kitchen. A short drive from both the coast and from Dorchester, there are also good local walks directly from the door - including across the fields and around the wood (dogs must be on lead; herd of deer evident). The enclosed garden is very private and a great place to sit out if the weather’s kind (which it was to us). The adjacent road was busier than we had expected during the day but not sufficiently noisy at night to be a problem. As it is a period property, it possesses considerable character and there are obviously a few quirks, which other reviews may have been unnecessarily critical about; we found everything to be clean, tidy and had no issues with any of the facilities. The local farm shop just over a mile away is highly recommended too. We fully expect to return to this property in the future.
I beg to differ with the June reviewer's comments, which in my opinion were rather petty.
One has to wheel the rubbish out at most of Sykes Cottages' holiday homes. Here it was only a matter of a few yards, hardly a chore! On our arrival we found a friendly welcome from the owners in the form of a card, a small bottle of milk, some biscuits, tea bags and coffee. The Lodge was comfortable and clean, and the building full of character, internally and externally. We had a good night's sleep every night, the room with the single beds offering sufficient distance from most traffic noise; it's only a 'B' road, after all. Careful if you leave the door open when going out into the garden - there are squirrels about, but it was a young wren which got in briefly! And at this time of year you may discover a spider looking for some shelter. We didn't want for anything during our stay and would be happy to return sometime next year to further explore the wonderful countryside, dog friendly pubs and other places of interest.
