Description

The Retreat forms part of a cosy stone cottage, on the grounds of the 18th century Appuldurcombe House, on the outskirts of Wroxall on the Isle of Wight.

Set in a beautifully tranquil location, this bolt hole can be enjoyed equally as a romantic getaway or as a homely base for a holiday of outdoor adventure and exploration.

Enter the property and be welcomed by its well-equipped, black and white galley kitchen which also plays host to a delightful dining table set for two.

Head into the peaceful sitting room where you can unwind after a day of touring the area; a stunning French door lights the room up as well as offering soothing views of the surrounding woodland.

A couple of steps up brings you to the pristine tiled shower room, the perfect spot to get yourself ready for a night in the local Star Inn pub.

Take the stairs and arrive at the wonderfully bright and airy double bedroom, the open layout and fresh features give it a real sense of homeliness.

Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this Wroxall cottage with a morning stroll through the 300 acres of woodland that surrounds you.

The village of Wroxall has a high-quality pub serving food and a convenience store for your daily essentials.

The wonderful seaside resort of Ventnor comes within a five-minute drive and offers a wide range of amenities, as well as a golf course and a glorious sandy beach.

Even though you do not have a private garden , you are in the Grounds Of Appuldurcombe House you are able to stroll around the Parkland surrounding the house.

The Isle of Wight is easily navigated by car, meaning that you could spend the day at northern Cowes, or take a trip west to the Isle of Wight AONB.

The Retreat is a lovely and cosy cottage in an excellent location.

The Retreat is set in beautiful peaceful grounds, which our dog really enjoyed.

The accommodation is smaller than the description suggests; 'well-equipped, black and white galley kitchen which also plays host to a delightful dining table set for two.' is somewhat misleading. The kitchen would benefit from an extra shelf to help store shopping because there is little worktop and cupboard space, and the dining table really shouldn't be described as 'delightful'. It is very basic and it's quite cramped even for two. We ended up having to store some of our groceries on it. 'A couple of steps up brings you to the pristine tiled shower room.' Pristine is certainly not an appropriate descriptor. By far the worst aspect of the shower room is the hair on the floor and mould on the wall behind the door. It is clear that the room is cleaned with the door open so this gets missed. Some of the floor tiles have blackened grout, also suggesting mould and needing a thorough clean. Additionally, as others have said, it really needs a shelf (which there is room for) because your toiletries will end up on the basin and the slim gap behind the toilet cistern. The bedroom isn't what I would call 'airy'. The bed is comfortable, but it would be much better if it didn't have protruding square corners that you'll bruise your legs on when trying to shuffle down the sides. This is made worse when you have to go to the other end of the room to switch the light off before navigating your way into bed in the dark - this also presents a safety issue when finding your way to the toilet during the night because the light switch is close to the top of the stairs. Overall, we found it to be quite disappointing accommodation when compared with similar properties we have stayed at before.

Given a good welcome and many thanks for Prosecco goodies and tea coffee etc.

A comfy bed and heating. Character Cottage. Could be rather chilly in the evening downstairs. We were rather perplexed that an Upright Hoover which was full ready to be emptied was left in the corner of the small living room. A bit annoying that a dirty greasy baking tray was left in the cupboard. It was made a bit more difficult to cook as there was no Oven Glove? I also had to clean kettle out as it badly needed to be descaled. Lots of glasses were provided but there were only 2 rather nice mugs for a cuppa! No other cups or saucers. The area is beautiful and lovely grounds. Stunning location.

I stayed here by myself with my small dog, for 5 days mid July 25 The flat is in a beautiful quiet setting and works well enough for 1.

5 people. I enjoyed my time here as the weather was beautiful and the little welcome pack was very useful. But, the first few days the place was freezing and I had to have the heater on full time. The bed had a light duvet on and I had to sleep with warm clothes on. The were no blankets or rugs to make this better and I had to borrow a thick sleeping bag from a friend on the island after 3 days. The kitchen was good apart from lack of bowls for soup or pasta. Nothing to drain food with and I went out and bought utensils to use. The above flat , had children running up and down. It would be great, if the flat above could appreciate how much noise it creates. The bedroom needs a side table or a shelf with a light on by the bed. And finally the bathroom needs a shelf or similar to put your toothbrush etc on. With all of the small things added it would a better stay and as I have already said it is a beautiful setting and I felt lucky to be there.
