We had a lovely week at Lantern Cottage once we'd sorted the parking which was not in fact as complicated as first appeared.

We weren't too sure about the recycling situation but that was just a minor point.

We had a lovely week at the cottage in Rye.

It was in a great location to all the shops, pubs and restaurants. The cottage had a good supply of washing and cooking facilities to make our stay comfortable. We would definitely recommend it to others. It was quiet and off the main roads up a walkway not open to cars or bikes, but you could unpack and pack up a car easily nearby and car parks were cheap to use. Easily accessible by train also. So much to see and do nearby.

Second stay in Lantern cottage this year, we were last there in January, see review.

This time it was June, and we brought the whippet. With hindsight, it would have been much easier to stay somewhere with a parking space, because more stuff to bring. However, parking spaces are like gold dust in Rye, due its historic nature and cobbled streets. So we managed ; a combination of using the ‘Cattle Market’, car park , 5 minutes walk and £3 for 24 hours, and the parking bays bottom of Mermaid street, near the ice cream parlour - free on Sundays and payable in advance on other days via Ringo App. You can leave car overnight, and pay in advance. Handy for an early morning pack up of the car . Lantern cottage is Grade 2 listed, up a car free cobbled street, that has lovely views especially at sunset. We were amazed by the numbers of visitors who stopped to admire the cottage and take photos of the roses, hydrangeas and lavender outside, and of the view. On Saturday night a guided walk stops outside the cottage too. As for Lantern cottage, the well sized bedrooms are tastefully furnished and good bed linen provided ..pillows could be plumper!. The bed and bedrooms do feel a bit on the slope due to the historic nature of the building . We were pleased that the maintenance issues we highlighted on our last visit were resolved and there is now brighter lighting on the steep stairwell. The kitchen would benefit from a few more items, e.g.a mixing bowl, and some more drinking glasses, but appreciated oil and condiments left, and sufficient loo rolls. The bathroom waste bin needs replacing as rusty at the bottom. We stayed during a record breaking heatwave and I think that all cottage owners will need to add fans to their inventory! I think the appeal of Lantern Cottage has more to do with its location in the historic heart of Rye , rather than its comfort, furnishings and equipment. Yes sofa is tired and uncomfortable. Rye is delightful, dog friendly and popular with visitors from UK and abroad. Lots of independent shops and cafes, we like ‘Grounded’ , a community cafe on Lion Street , there’s a lovely deli and and antique shops , and the world renowned Merchant and Mills fabric shop. We find something new on every visit …if you have a car, visit Tillingham Vineyard for an informal lunch, or wine tour.
