Description

Nestled in the heart of Thornthwaite in the North of the Lake District, is this beautiful property dating back to the 1600s, Pen Cottage.

Formerly part of the Swan Hotel, the property has been converted into a number of luxury dwellings for family and friends looking to enjoy all that this idyllic location has to offer.

Pen Cottage encompasses a fresh and modern feel along with a delightful display of fine furnishings and décor with oak beams and thick walls, echoing the warmth of the original 17th century coaching inn that it once was.

From the entrance porch, head straight into the fitted kitchen where you will find all the essential appliances to rustle up a hearty feast, with assistance from the electric oven, gas hob, microwave, fridge and freezer.

Gather round the dining table to enjoy your home-cooked meal while discussing how you shall spend the remainder of your holiday – will it be rambling the surrounding fells or exploring the quaint streets of Keswick and Cockermouth?

A couple of steps takes you into the lounge where double glass doors invite you onto the decked patio, perfect for sitting out with a glass of wine while admiring the landscaped gardens and panoramic views of Skiddaw in the distance, with the elevated position affording Pen Cottage some of the most mesmerising views in the Lake District.

As the night rolls in, choose between the king-size and twin bedroom to catch your rest, each of which benefit from oak furnishings to store your personal belongings.

There is also a family bathroom with a choice of a relaxing evening bath, or a quick brisk shower to freshen up before the day ahead.

Avid walkers and cyclists can delight in the surrounding area with the coast-to-coast cycle path nearby, as well as Whinlatter Forest Park to explore, or challenge yourself to a hike up Skiddaw, well-worth your efforts for the beautiful vistas once you reach the peak.

Take a night off cooking and treat yourself to a meal at one of the fine restaurants in the area, with the Pheasant at Bassenthwaite and Ivy House in Braithwaite being just a few examples of wonderful cuisine, whilst Keswick offers evening theatre, cinema and fabulous shopping.

The northern part of the Lake District offers a wide range of areas to explore, including Derwentwater, Ullswater and Helvellyn, along with opportunities to go boating, hiking and camping.

Whatever you choose to do, consider Pen Cottage for your next escape to this magnificent National Park.

What a place!

This is our 3rd year that we've spent in this place, and we love everything about this property. It's surprisingly big, and very well equipped. The views from the main living room are amazing, and the location is really excellent. It's quiet, but there is also a very large shared garden where you can meet other people. You can walk from here to Bassenthwaite lake without crossing any roads. It's an incredibly beautiful place to be. There's also a walk from here up to Barf, where the views are something else. It's quite a tricky climb, but amazing at the top. You also have Keswick really close, with everything that town has to offer, and the other way is Cockermouth. We loved it so much we've already booked it again for next year...

A lovely well equipped apartment with excellent views and outdoor space.

The apartment is an easy drive from Keswick. We had a lovely time and would definitely stay at Pen cottage again

Overall, I would stay here again.

Great location, beautiful views, lovely cottage with beautiful shared gardens. Close to a village shop, pub, bistro cafe etc. all within 5 mins drive. Lots of walks nearby great for walking with a child in a carrier, 2-3 hour summit walks. 10 mins into Keswick. Unfortunately the cleaning company made an error and the cottage was not cleaned prior to our arrival and we mistakenly slept in dirty beds (as they had been perfectly made, but dirty pillows hidden under clean ones by previous guests!) which is a real shame to have to mention as this I assume is not the owner's fault and overall I would stay here again despite this. Most disappointing is how hard it was to get any kind of proactive response from Sykes, and there is absolutely zero help from them with these kind of issues at a weekend which is when we arrived. Only other thing - I personally found the pillows extremely hard and difficult to sleep on and I honestly would have to take my own pillow if I was to stay here again which is not something I have ever done before or felt the need to! But other than this it is a great cottage and I would stay here again.
