What guests are saying
Derwent Cottage was perfect for our stay in Keswick.
Location-wise, it's just s short walk into Keswick centre and most local walks are on your doorstep. It was clean and well-equipped. The only (really minor) point was that the shower and hot water weren't great. A bath was just hot enough if run just with the hot water tap on, so could do with being a bit hotter, and the shower wasn't overly powerful, but these are minor things in the greater experience.
This was our third stay at Derwent Cottage and we have a further two stays for 2027 booked.
This property is a home from home, very spacious, clean and comfortable and the kitchen is very well equipped. The only issue we had was with the WiFi and continously losing connection which have never had before. Overall another fantastic stay and looking forward to returning!
Dear Lisa, thanks for the feedback. We’ll check the Wi-Fi as it’s been very reliable until now. Hope to meet you when you visit in 2027. intend to upgrade the Wi-Fi before you return!
Location wonderful.
Layout of house wonderful. Issues - upstairs shower is abysmal. Truly awful. Lake District in the Autumn - need to have a tumble drier.
Completely split on this property.
Despite saying it is 'Dog friendly', one of the first things we were presented with was a folder stating that dogs are not allowed upstairs or on the sofas. Obviously, I am not sure if the property owner is a dog owner but most dog owners are well aware that many dogs will not sleep downstairs when their owners are upstairs. Imagine how it feels to arrive at a property at the start of your holiday to have to contemplate whether to go against the owners wishes or sleep on the sofa for the week so that your dog doesn't get anxious! Not impressed! The property is either pet-friendly or it isn't. Please don't try to bring in extra custom by stating that it is and then apply restrictions. They're probably not enforceable, anyway! If we had known the restrictions, we would not have booked the property. Having had my moan I can report that the house was the cleanest I have known. Very well, maintained. However, parking is difficult and, on the day we arrived, was a nightmare. We had to lug our things about 400m. The parking did ease up on Sunday and was more bareable for the rest of the break.
We had a very comfortable stay at Derwent Cottage.
The house was spotless and well equipped. The house is “dog friendly” but there was no indication that dogs had been in the house. We particularly liked the enormous bathroom! Our two main wishes in a holiday cottage are a comfortable bed and an efficient shower- we were happy on both counts. We had no problem parking our two cars despite the lack of designated parking space. We know this area well and knew that the location for us was perfect. An easy walk to the town and the bus station. We would definitely recommend this house and would like to return
Thank you Philip for your kind comments. Your positive feedback is much appreciated. We’re pleased you enjoyed your stay at Derwent Cottage and hope you will visit again
A lovely property, just needs a bit more care when cleaning, there were marks on kitchen units and shower drains were dirty, needed a bit of bleach, also a few diffusers and air freshener wouldn’t go amiss as it had a stale smell especially in the morning.
Thanks for your feedback, which has been discussed with the housekeepers who have promised to be more diligent. Diffusers have been introduced into the main living area.
The location of the property was fantastic with just a 10 minute walk into the town centre.
However, we were very disappointed that the property was looking very tired - many stains on the carpets, sofas smelt and hadn’t been moved to clean, cobwebs on stairs and skirtings suggesting only a surface clean had been done! Dirty and greasy pans in kitchen cupboard obviously hadn’t been checked, chipped crockery, chipped glass dishes that we were consequently unable to use. The quality of bedding and pillows provided were poor (there was a tear in bedsheet in the double room). We regularly visit Keswick so it was such a shame that this property did not meet the price we payed or standard outlined on the description.
We believe this review to be exaggerated, but within a week of the review being submitted, without visiting the property and to reassure future guests, we arranged for the carpets and sofas to be professionally cleaned. Upon arriving at Derwent Cottage we found stains on the carpet which had occurred in recent months. They have now been removed. Neither us or the specialist cleaner could find any smell on the sofas, but they were cleaned anyway. We found two chipped items of crockery out of more than 40 pieces. One Pyrex cooking dish was also chipped. We regret this but Derwent Cottage is well equipped so there were plenty of substitutes. The bedding is of good quality. The quilts are from Dorma and Fogarty and the linen is “hotel” quality from a supplier specialising in supplying hotels. The tear in the sheet was about 1cm in length and was not easy to see. We’ve had a meeting with our cleaners to ensure high standards are maintained and we’re confident they will be. To ensure guest comfort and to keep the cottage refreshed, in the last twelve months, the shower in the main bathroom has been completely refurbished and some mattresses replaced. We will continue to replace and upgrade items that need replacing. We want future guests to be assured that we are committed to maintaining high quality at Derwent Cottage and regret that the stained carpets created an impression of poor cleaning standards. The management company has a 24/7 contact number if any problems arise during your stay.
Really lovely cottage, modern kitchen and bathrooms, would definitely stay again!
Very comfortavle. Had everything we needed. Improvements would be a new travel cot as its very well loved, better Internet and eliminating the slight dog smell (particularly under the stairs).
Thanks Abi. We plan to get fibre broadband during the winter when the house is unoccupied for a few weeks and have just had the carpets and sofas cleaned by a specialist cleaner, which we do regularly, to freshen things up.
Nice property about 10 minutes walk from town centre with dozens of restaurants, pubs, cinema and shops.
20 minutes walk from the lake and theatre. Bookings essential for the best restaurants in peak season. We managed to park a few yards away on the same street and there seemed to be enough parking to go round even when a road was closed for resurfacing. By the time you have done the one-way and found somewhere to park you're better off leaving the car and walking into town if you are able. Main bedroom and bathroom on first floor, 2nd and 3rd bedrooms up 2 flights of stairs. 2nd bedroom could do with a dressing table, and my daughters felt more large mirrors would be useful in bedrooms! Lots to do locally. In dry weather: - boat trip on Derwent water - break journey round lake with a walk up CatBells. Don't miss a detour to Friar's Crag afterwards to watch the sun set. - walk through Fitz park and head along old railway path to Castlerigg Stone Circle Wet weather attractions: Pencil Museum, Theatre by the Lake, Honister Slate Mine, Rheged Driving tours: Borrowdale Valley (detour to 'Surprise View' on Watendlath Rd is well worth it), over Honister Pass to Buttermere. Can return via Newlands Pass or Whinlatter Pass and Cockermouth. All great routes. Mountain walks: Scafell Pike from Seathwaite, Great Gable from Honister, Skiddaw from Keswick, Blencathra from Threlkeld are all brilliant walks at this end of the Lakes but you are spoilt for choice with hundreds of options.
Thanks for the review Peter. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay and found plenty to do!
The property would benefit from a TV in the master bedroom and whilst generally very clean the cupboard doors were a bit grubby.
Overall the property was extremely comfortable, in a great location and has excellent amenities.
Thanks for the review Catherine. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay and found Derwent Cottage very comfortable. We’ve addressed your comments about the cupboard doors to the cleaners and apologise if they were not as clean as they should be. We’ll give consideration to the extra TV when we make changes during the winter months.
Lovely stay at Derwent Cottage, spacious and well equipped property.
Lovely quiet area but only 10 min walk to centre of Keswick. Secure courtyard which was great with the dogs and was nice to sit in when the sun was out. Had everything you needed for a week away and the welcome pack was very appreciated.
Thanks Carolyn. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay.
Our second stay and we have just booked again for next year.
This is a beautiful cottage in a perfect location - just five minutes walk from the town centre. Garden is total secure for our two dogs which is so important for us. The cottage is clean and really well maintained with everything you could need for you stay.
Thank you Ursula. We hope to see you again
This was our second visit to this excellent cottage.
It is very warm and comfortable with everything you need for a holiday. Thank you we love staying here.
Thank you Alan, we hope to see you again.
Excellent cottage !
!!! Really enjoyed our stay .
A lovely cottage in a great location.
The cottage has everything you could need for a comfortable stay. lots of lovely walks on your doorstep. Really enjoyed our stay.
Absolutely loved the cottage, thanks so much.
Unfortunately the heating wasnt working when we arrived but a phone call to the emergency number given and 30 minutes all sorted. Impressive response. The wood burner is amazing and the kitchen well stocked with utensils. Beds very comfy and loads of storage space. Bathroom was huge and we appreciated having a toilet downstairs. The cottage is decorated to a high speck. The only comment we will make is that the outside patio area is lovely but the gate to the back of the property was catching on the paving slabs and we were so anxious not to scratch and damage them . We hope that can be sorted before any damage. We will definitely recommend and return.
We felt so at home in Derwent cottage and didn’t want to come home!
It is spacious and comfortable and in a great location. The upstairs shower could do with an upgrade, but the downstairs one made up for it. Very well equipped kitchen, lovely wood burner - we slept so well here. Would book again.
We had a fantastic stay at this holiday home.
The house was spotless, very easy to find and access, and had everything we needed, including plenty of cookware and fresh towels. The thoughtful welcome gift from the owners was a lovely touch and made us feel very welcome. We really enjoyed our time here and would definitely return in the future.
Thank you Leah. We’re pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon
Lovely house.
House is as described. Beautifully decorated. It’s a perfect location, short walk to shops, bars and restaurants, Fitz park and the lake and near to the us stop. We parked easily on the street outside the house. House was lovely and clean and all amenities needed for a week away were provided. There is a small well kept secure back yard which is a bonus if you have a dog with you and would be lovely in the summer. We had a small issue with the front door lock which was quickly sorted by the owner. Would definitely stay again and recommend this property.
It’s our fourth year running staying at this property.
It doesn’t disappoint. It’s ideally located for walking into town and parking on street outside the property has never been an issue. We love the wood burner which makes the long winter evenings warm and cosy. We intend coming back next year. This property is very highly recommended.
We have booked this cottage stay for the last few years as it is such a lovely cosy cottage to stay in, just a short easy walk from the town, and Fitz park.
The owners have maintained it to a high level, thinking of all possible occupants. It is also dog friendly which is much appreciated. It was superbly decorated/comfortable and clean. Whilst the beds are extremely comfortable, the pillows were not so and my only reason for not a full mark for comfort, otherwise the cottage is faultless. Even the outside area is highly maintained and extremely comfortable and secure for relaxing in. The outside tap for shoes/dog is another added bonus. Inside the log burner, with plenty of supplied logs, is a delight, however this year there was no fire poker/tongues making it less easy to manage the fire. Overall though, as always, a delightful stay. We will not hesitate in booking again and would definitely recommend this delightfully furnished cosy cottage.
On our arrival we were happy to find a lovely and well maintained property, in a prime and well established area of Keswick.
The decor and contemporary facilities made for a very comfortable stay, and we would definitely return again in the future.
Been twice now and we will be back it's excellent-comfortable good facilities and perfect position we love this cottage
A beautiful and comfortable cottage that is well maintained.
Parking was never an issue. Outdoor yard useful for dogs. Main door lintel and first stair are both a fraction too high so remember to raise your foot a little higher when stepping! Would stay again.
Thanks for the kind review. We’re very pleased you enjoyed your stay at Derwent Cottage and will indeed stay again.
Very comfortable house , we were impressed and really enjoyed our stay.
Thanks for the feedback. We’re very pleased to know you enjoyed your stay and found everything to your liking.
Me, my wife and daughter plus the two dogs had a wonderful week at this property.
Would certainly come back here again.
Thanks for the feedback. The star ratings don’t seem to correspond with your comments so we’d be happy with any feedback to help us improve Derwent Cottage. We hope you will come again and share your thoughts with us
We have stayed in 3 other properties in Keswick and can now say we have found the one.
It is well decorated with good quality facilities. The kitchen had everything you needed. The beds were so comfy, and the place was so clean. The yard at the back had a washing line and table and chairs. It's a short walk to the shops and Fitz Park. We had no problem parking in the street. We've already recommend it to our friends and will definitely stay there if we return next year.
Thanks so much for your kind and positive review. we are pleased you found everything to your liking and will recommend Derwent Cottage to your friends. We do hope you will visit again.
We had a lovely stay at Derwent Cottage.
It was comfortable and clean. We were a group of 5 friends so it was good to have the biggest bedroom set up as a twin. The location is ideal, a short walk from the town centre but peaceful and quiet. We were lucky to find parking outside the house too. We would love to come back next year!
Thanks for your kind feedback. We’re very pleased you enjoyed your stay and will return next year
We had a wonderful stay at Derwent Cottage it was a great base for us in Keswick.
The cottage was immaculately clean when we arrived and warm and cosy. Lots of thoughtful touches like the welcome try and tea/coffee and biscuits. The garden was totally secure for our dogs which is so important for us. The bed was lovely and comfy. We were really lucky that it was beautiful sunshine the whole time we were there. We are hoping to stay again when we visit again next year.
Thanks Ursula, we hope to see you next year!
Excellent house, everything you need and very comfortable.
We Loved it !!
Thanks Alan, we can see you’ve already booked for next year and hope you have another great week!
Derwent cottage was excellent.
Very spacious and comfortable. Very good beds and bedding. Nice little touches like toiletries, coffee tea and jam were provided. Good towels. Very well situated for the town, buses etc. we hope to return.
Thanks for the feedback Josephine. It’s much appreciated and we do hope you will visit again.
This is the third year running that we have chosen to stay in this house for our pre Christmas break.
It is ideally situated for a short walk into the town centre and a great base to explore the northern lakes. It has all the facilities needed. Tucked away in a quiet street with no parking problems. We would highly recommend.
Thank You David. We hope you will visit again in 2025!
Derwent cottage was a real home from home, the owners had decorated and furnished it lovely, all the little extras had been thought of such as shampoo and hand wash, beautiful little welcome pack.
We were very comfortable and warm for the week. The only thing tht we thought needs looking at is the bath, you can't run a good hot bath it only runs luke warm which isn't no good after a day on fells! Flip side the downstairs shower was to die for!
Thank You Sophie. We're pleased you had a good stay and appreciate your feedback. We'll try to sort the bath water and keep the shower flowing!
The cottage was beautiful, tastefully decorated and immaculately clean.
It was perfect for our family get away - we loved the log burner and the location was perfect for Keswick town centre but still in a quiet street. The rooms were a lovely size and the showers great. The only small request is it would have been great to be provided with a pint of fresh milk on arrival rather than sachets and providing essentials like kitchen foil, cling film and sandwich bags would have been useful. Thanks for a lovely stay - we will be hopefully be back
The beds are really, uncomfortably firm.
I would not return for this reason alone. All other aspects of the house are spot on. The overall cleanliness would benefit from attention e.g. very dusty light fittings, architrave, courtyard in need of a jet wash.
Dear Robert, We're sorry you thought the beds uncomfortable. We recognise the beds are firm but have not found them uncomfortable and know they are of a high quality. We're glad you were pleased with everything else in the house and trust hope you had a good stay. We'll be discussing your comments about dusty items with the cleaners as it appears their usual high standards may have dropped slightly. We're confident improvements will follow. The courtyard will be jet-washed as part of the regular maintenance cycle which is in place to keep Derwent Cottage in tip-top condition for our guests.
Lovely home , very comfortable and clean.
The house has everything you could possible need. Close to the village and ideal location to access amazing walks and hikes. The outdoor yard/garden is very safe for dogs which is reassuring.
Thanks Elaine, we’re pleased you enjoyed your stay.
We have just had a lovely week at derwent cottage and have en joyed ourselves immensely.
Lovely and comfortable with everything provided we could wish for and great location-just a short walk to town -will hopefully see you again before too long thank you
Thanks for the kind words. We’re really pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope you will visit again.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Derwent Cottage and would thoroughly recommend it.
The rooms are really comfortable and the house lends itself to a 4 or 5 person holiday. The kitchen offers great facilities along with the two bathrooms and outdoor space.
Thanks Katie, it’s always good to get feedback. Your scores are a bit lower than we have been getting but we are pleased you would thoroughly recommend Derwent Cottage and from your comments it looks like you enjoyed your stay and had everything you needed.
Absolutely perfect stay.
Great location for everything in Keswick
Thanks Mark. The feedback is appreciated and we’re pleased you had a good stay
We loved our stay and it was such a comfortable holiday house.
The property would benefit from a few more general utensils (particularly tea spoons), a frying pan and some weighing scales for those holiday makers who cook when on holiday!
Hi Alison, thanks for your suggestions. The cottage now has some digital scales, another frying pan and more teaspoons! We’re glad you enjoyed your stay
We had a fantastic stay here at Derwent cottage.
The house was clean and very accommodating. The beds are a little on the hard side but other than that it’s a very nice cottage.
Thanks for the feedback Kassie. Sorry you found the beds a bit firm but trust you found everything else OK.
We had a fantastic holiday at Derwent Cottage.
The property is in a great location and very handy for Fitz Park and the town centre. Parking could be busy but we always managed to get a space on the same street or one nearby. The house itself is well equipped, modern and clean. Tea, coffee, UHT milk and biscuits were provided along basic cleaning supplies for the kitchen/dishwasher. The storage in the garden and outdoor hose were great for the bikes. Please note the staircase up to the second floor bedrooms is narrow and there is no toilet on that level - did not cause an issue for us. The main bathroom is huge and lovely shampoo, conditioner and body wash were provided. We would happily stay here again.
Thanks very much for the feedback, it’s much appreciated . We’re glad you enjoyed your stay and liked the cottage and hope you will visit again
Excellent accommodation which is very well placed for all of the town's amenities.
The owner of the property made sure that everything was available and comfortable. I would definitely return to the property if I am back in the Lake District and would recommend it to anyone seeking a relaxing stay.
Thanks for the positive feedback, it’s great to know you might come again
This was our second stay at this excellent property which is perfectly situated for our needs.
The only criticism being that on our arrival we could not access the keys from the key safe with the key code provided. On contacting the key holder Kim she provided us with the correct key code and seemed surprised that we had not been informed by Sykes as they had had the same problem the week before.
We’re glad you enjoyed your stay and apologise for the confusion over the key code which has now been sorted
Excellent stay at an excellent cottage.
Thank you!
Comfortable and well-equipped property in a great location for exploring the Lake District.
Some good walks from the cottage itself and easy access to town and bus station. We would certainly return to use it again.
Property is extremely well situated, spacious and well appointed.
However on arrival there were obvious issues in relation to the cleanliness of the property. 1. Within the oven there were left over cooked tacos on a baking tray. 2. Foodstuffs leftover in the cutlery basket. 3. Dirty unwashed mugs left in the dishwasher. 4. Touchscreen functions on the cooker / grill were covered in fingerprints and clearly hadn't been wiped down / cleaned. 5. There was a lot of dog hair especially on the couches. (Appreciate this is a dog friendly property however have stayed in multiple dog friendly properties without this issue) Two days into our stay the washing machine also broke down. We were advised two days later that the machine was broken and wouldn't be repaired / replaced while we were there. One of these issues alone I would have likely overlooked however all together made for a less than ideal break. I did contact the property management on arrival and explained the issues around the cleanliness of the property to which they apologised and advised they could sent out another cleaning team the following day. We arrived in the evening so this wasn't really any use as we had to prepare food and sorted the cleaning ourselves. Leftover food in the oven is just totally unacceptable. I realise these issues are largely out of control of the owners and it's the cleaning company contracted that have let them down so this is not a personal attack on the owners or the property itself. I'm just annoyed given the price we paid. We have stayed in Keswick is similarly priced properties and also cheaper properties and never encountered cleanliness issues. I have also tried containing Sykes directly to report these issues, promises of callbacks have been made and so far nothing. Not only would I not stay at this property again I will not be using Sykes again.
It is clear the cleaning was not upto the usual standard on this occasion and we sincerely apologise for that. Obviously the cooker and oven have been ‘missed’ in the clean and the residual dog hair has not been cleaned thoroughly enough. We have discussed this episode at length with the management company and obtained reassurances that this is a ‘one off’ incident and remedial action has been taken. The management company are on hand to deal with any incidents which arise. In this they responded positively and would willingly have sent another cleaning team to remedy the situation but the offer was declined. The failure of the washing machine could not have been foreseen and unfortunately it was not possible to arrange a replacement in the short time frame. Again, we apologise for the inconvenience caused to the guest. A new machine has since been fitted. Derwent Cottage is maintained to a high standard as evidenced by previous reviews. We regret the disappointing experience of this guest and will strive to ensure there is no repetition.
Excellent holiday accommodation, homely with modern facilities and plenty of kitchen equipment.
Minus points are: rear gate is heavy and scraping the ground making it very difficult to open (to put out rubbish) and upstairs shower door slides out of track if not careful. Other than these minor points a great place to stay
Quite simply the best cottage we have stayed in in the 10 years we have been coming for our summer holidays to the Keswick convention.
Beautifully comfortable beds, a kitchen I would like to take home with me, lovely living spaces and 2 beautiful bathrooms. And if nice weather a lovely courtyard garden with seating. Great communication from Kim who manages the property. We would love to stay here again, but would prefer a Saturday to Saturday let.
Really lovely cottage.
Lots of living space and nice touches like the welcome pack, biscuits and coffee and tea. Incredibly clean and nice outside space which gets the sun until the evening. Very central for town and fitz park.
Highly recommend staying in Derwent cottage, very clean, tidy, high spec finish, very local to keswick centre, parking was OK
We loved our week long stay in this property.
It is very spacious and homely and has everything you need! This was my first holiday with my newborn son and I would say the property is extremely family friendly. Only a 5 minute walk into Keswick and situated next to a gorgeous park! Would 100% recommend and hope to stay again in the future!
Spacious, comfortable property close to all amenities.
Lovely house: clean and fresh.
We found everything we needed. Excellent location for park, town and lake. Keswick is the perfect place for a holiday with a fur baby - she was welcome everywhere.
We had a lovely stay here at the start of December.
The cottage is well placed being a 5 minute walk into Keswick. The house was clean and tidy with great facilities. The only down side was that a previous party had sadly damaged the wood burning fire so we weren't able to use it as there was no glass which was a shame. However, the rest of our stay was great. We would definitely be back as there is plenty to do around Keswick.
