  • "Amazing. This property is a real gem."

Accessibility is a very personal and individual thing but this property ticked every box that we needed it to tick. Location is fantastic, Comfort is amazing, Cleanliness is perfect, and the facilities are just above and beyond. We just had a really lovely week that was made possible by a property owner that had took the time to understand different needs and accommodate them. I almost don't want to publish this review because I want to keep this place a secret and always available when I want to visit again - which we definitely will!

  • "Lovely holiday home with everything we needed."

Organic bedding, all spotless and comfy beds. Buttermere was in a perfect location to go out and about walking, the owners had included lots of information on walks in the area, very handy. The holiday home was also set in its own pretty grounds with its own little outside area, great for our dog. Would definitely return again to this lovey spot, thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing break.

  • "Fantastic location to explore the Northern Lakes."

Buttermere offers a perfect place to rest and relax after a day of excitement in the lakes. Privacy and comfort are key themes. The property is also pet friendly and for our teenage dog it was perfect, on one level, safe and secure.

  • "Lovely cottage."

Hard to find down the lane. May require larger clear sign at entrance. There was a gate closed at the entrance which made us feel it was a private estate. The cottage is in a great location to access all areas of the lakes. The cottage was well equipped had a well equipped kitchen. The bedroom was spacious. The beds were clean and tidy and comfortable. The cottage and bathroom catered for a disable person which was what we required. There was a lovely small path way, walk around the back of the cottages to walk dogs and for children to wander in the meadow. There were just a few issues that need addressing. The back patio doors would not lock and one broken and held with screws. The curtains need more hooks and repair. The TV had a muffled sound so you could not hear.we adjusted it so the sound came out on one speak, which helped slightly. We had a great stay and would return.

Thanks for pointing these things out. Repairs done and new TV now in place! Property Owner

  • "The brochure tells of lots of things to see around the grounds."

What it fails to say (for a wheelchair user) is that the yard is gravel and the footpaths are very rough earth. The only wheelchair usable space is outside the front of the cottage. The brochure tells of the “state of the art” underfloor heating. It might me “state of the art” but it doesn’t mention the uneven stone floors, making them a trip hazard, or the fact that when you alter the heat setting, on the thermostat, it takes 24hours to change the temperature. The kitchen area is far from being wheelchair accessible in that the sink, cooker, microwave oven, fridge are all far too high to operate. There are no instructions for operating the wood burning stove, which is recommended to be used to supplement the “state of the art” heating system.

Thank you for pointing out the inaccuracies on the listing. We have asked for the listing to be amended to make clear to wheelchair users the limits on the property. The instructions about the stove were removed during the pandemic and not yet replaced. We will now! Property Owner

  • "The cottage was lovely surrounded by beautiful gardens in a very pretty area but to say that pubs and shops were within walking distance was completely inaccurate as the nearest shops and pubs were in Cockermouth which were a good 10-15 minutes by car."

Despite this I would definitely go again

Thanks for pointing this out. The listing clearly needs amending and I have asked for this to be done. Property Owner

The accommodation is lovely, and the booking procedure with Sykes, plus follow up, was super efficient. Everything was just was we remembered, and just as lovely as the time before. What makes this place extra special is the wildlife garden, and the walks with our dog, who absolutely loved it. We will definitely return.

  • "As regulars visitors to the Lake district, Buttermere was the best self-catering accommodation so far."

Lovely log burning fire, quality fixtures and fittings, quality cooking utensils and cutlery etc. The space is warm, bright, open and airy and there's plenty of room for 4 guests. The bedrooms were fitted out with good quality bedding and there is lots of storage space. Nice big bathroom with plenty of hot water. Outside there is tables and chairs where you can sit and watch the wildlife. Buttermere is surrounded by quiet countryside just a short drive from the Lake District's main attractions. Just a couple of minor areas for improvement. Although the whole place was spotless, a few cobwebs on the ceilings and please set the heating to come on, the morning or night before arrival (especially if the forecast is below 0). We don't often return to the same place but we will be returning to Buttermere, sometime in the future. Thanks for a lovely 5 night, relaxing break.

  • "Buttermere Cottage is superb."

It was everything we hoped for and more. Such comfortable beds, and a well equipped kitchen. Completely suitable for those less mobile, and those for whom mobility is not a problem. It meant that we could enjoy our little escape with our 91 year old mum completely inclusively, which was a joy. Eco friendly too, and with lots of little extras left by the owner; who was so thoughtful. The grounds are wonderful to walk around, completely safe and secure for our little dog. We had the most lovely time, and are sure to return.

Everything there in the kitchen one could possibly need. Rather hoped both bedrooms would initially look similar but one was definitely better looking than the other. Car parking excellent and walks through the grounds to the pool early morning was heavenly. Thank you

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
