  • "We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Beckside Farm."

    It’s a comfortable, well equipped & spacious house with a fab garden. It is situated in a great place to explore, well positioned for beaches, walks, Lil Ratty Railway and the brilliant Muncaster Castle. The dark skies are immense too! Best of all was the hospitality of our hosts, we loved our daily chats and learning about the area, their lives and the farm, we would go back just for this!

  • "Beckside Farm is fantastic."

    The house is large and spacious, with everything you need to self cater. The location is great with lovely local walks (Gibsons Spout was a highlight) and easy access to climb Scarfell Pike. The nearby Brye Cafe and Brown Cow Inn are both lovely (food at the Inn is brilliant) and welcoming. The sinks in three of the bedrooms is particularly useful when staying as a group as this cuts down on people needing the bathrooms as the same time. Our host Tania was friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. If your looking for modern luxury, this probably isn't the listing for you. The bathroom (whilst clear recently updated) doesn't have the most powerful shower. The decor is dated etc. However, if your looking for a house with bags of character and a base for all the fantastic walking in the lakes, you'd struggle to do better than Beckside Farm.

  • "The property was lovely, spacious rooms, beautiful location."

    The bathroom looks to have been recently renovated, and the additional WC was good to have, as we were a group of 10. The hosts were very helpful with information about local sights, and there was a useful guide at the cottage of things to do nearby. There is a Tesco about 15 minutes’ drive away. Would highly recommend this property, and the rent was very reasonable.

  • "This property is in an ideal location for both the coast and Wastwater, and has real farmhouse charm."

    The owners (John and ?) are also working the farm, they were so welcoming and accommodating. The decor and standard of accommodation is probably right for what you pay for, not plush but plenty of space and a great front garden. It was too wet for us utilise this space on our short stay. A real plus is the size, 9 sleeping spaces in the bedrooms. Just what we needed.

  • "Beautiful place, lovely house, hosts couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming."

    The property had a really warm, homely feeling and the kids adored it. The beds were really comfy, the water was hot and the facilities in the well-equipped kitchen were both comprehensive and effective. We really liked the book of past experiences and ideas from other guests. Sadly we ran out of time to write our own story in there. It was a wonderful break and we’d love to come again. Highly recommended - thank you!

    Farmer Jack and family are so welcoming and we especially enjoyed our conversations with Jack. It's not a boutique, bijou cottage, don't expect Farrow and Ball world, but just enjoy a former family home on a working farm, one that's got what you need to have a good time, in a lovely spot, right by the fells and not too far from the local beach. (The village shop is not especially well stocked so take things you can't do without

The property

Nestled in the stone village of Bootle near Millom in the countryside of Cumbria, rests this detached farmhouse, Beckside Farm.

This detached holiday home is a great base for a family of nine looking to explore the fells and the coast, as well as the Lake District National Park.

Leave your vehicle in an off-road parking space before stepping inside to discover the entrance hallway; here you can kick off your muddy shoes ready for a ramble.

Look forward to unwinding in the living/dining room, where you can put your feet up and enjoy a hot chocolate in front of the flickering electric fire.

Gather around the dining table to tuck-into heart-warming meals, which can be prepared in the kitchen area, courtesy of the electric oven and hob.

On warm days, savour a glass of wine on the terrace, as the children run around the enclosed space and why not have an alfresco affair on the furniture?

When the sky grows dark, retire inside and elderly members can settle in the ground-floor double bedroom whilst everyone else climbs upstairs to choose their bedroom.

The first-floor hosts three more delightful bedrooms, including a king-size, a double and a family bedroom, so climb into bed with a good book ready for the day ahead.

Awaken with a soak in the bathroom or opt for a bubble bath to start your day off right before joining your guests at the dining table for a spot of breakfast.

If you fancy a break from the kitchen, take a short stroll to The Byre Cafe or for a greater selection of eateries jump in the car and head into the coastal town of Millom.

Visit the market town of Ulverston, lined with cobbled streets and ancient buildings, here you can see the comic legends at the Laurel and Hardy Museum, soak in the scenery at Ford Park or tee up at Ulverston Golf Club.

Also within easy reach is the unspoilt town of Broughton-in-Furness, steeped in history with its Saxon origins or travel further afield to Ambleside, known for its association with Romantic poets.

MILLOM, CUMBRIA

Broughton-in-Furness 7.4 miles; Ambleside 23.8 miles

This small coastal town on the southern edges of the Lake District National Park frames the northern shores of the estuary leading to the River Duddon. Millom Museum offers an insight to its past, with a reconstruction of a drift mine lending a nod to its iron and steel works. There is also a statue in the town centre, commemorating the iron industry, depicting 'The Scutcher' who stopped the iron ore tubs with and iron bar and his own strength. This town was also home to writer Norman Nicholson, who has a stained glass window in St. George's Church dedicated to his memory, while the strange 'fish' window in the Holy Trinity Church is also worth a visit. Discover the remains of Millom Castle and travel to nearby Haverigg, with its Blue Flag beach, a restored lighthouse and children's adventure play areas, for the ideal family day out. Also find the 7 tonne sculpture ‘Escape to Light’ positioned near to the Haverigg Inshore Rescue station, constructed by Josefina de Vasconcellos to pay tribute to the Inshore Rescue Teams in the UK. Other attractions in the region include the South Lakes Safari Zoo, Black Combe for walks with stunning views and Sandscale Haws, a National Nature Reserve with an outstanding dune habitat supporting a plethora of wildlife. Further afield are the delightful towns and villages of the Lakes District such as Grizedale, Ambleside and Windermere, not forgetting the abundant walking and cycling opportunities in the area.
