Swallows Nest

Swallow's Nest is situated in the heart of Coniston village, with free street parking opposite.

It was beautifully decorated, warm and well maintained. The bed was comfortable bed and the large bathroom had both a large shower and a separate bath. The skylight in the bathroom was great for looking at the night stars. At night it was very quiet. The next door builders, didn't start working until 8am on weekdays. The flat instruction sheet talked of providing "some basic kitchen essentials" although this only seemed to be tea bags. It also talked of "some little extras we hope you'll like", although there was no sign of these, which was disappointing having raised our expectations. The fire instructions said to "follow the safety plan located on the entrance door" and to "read the fire risk assessment located near the washing machine" but neither were present. The warnings of the fire alarm sounding "IF THERE IS EXCESSIVE HEAT OR SMOKE FROM COOKING" requiring resetting by either the owners or an engineer with a wait of up to 2hours, make cooking a bit of a stressful event, even with the kitchen extractor fan on, the kitchen window wide open and the bedroom door closed!

Ideal location for hiking and visiting other towns.

We had a lovely stay, the flat was perfect.

The only thing that would probably annoy people is the work that was being done next door, if you wanted a lie in, it was impossible during week days but as we were up and out, we didn't have a problem.

Lovely cottage and lovely stay!

The cottage had just what we wanted and needed. The bathroom was great with a lovely big shower. And kitchen had sensible crockery, pans, etc. A couple of little niggles - the tin opener doesn't work and could do with replacing. And the smoke/heat alarm situation made us a bit nervous about cooking, especially having read reviews from people who set it off. However, despite my husband's best efforts, it was fine. We turned on the extractor full whack and opened the kitchen window. All good including for toast, bacon, and frying. So don't worry, just be sensible! All in all, a great flat in a beautiful place and we'd be back in a heartbeat ❤️

Disappointed - 2 odd wine glasses, 2 odd water glasses, 4 odd beer glasses, 4 odd white mugs, 2 bowls chipped and 1 chipped plate.

We highlighted this last September when we last visited and had hoped that new glasses and crockery could have been purchased. It wouldnt cost a lot to replace!! This lets Swallows Nest down in our opinion, please pass on our comments to the owners. Thank you

A great location.

The accommodation fitted our needs and was clean and tidy. The outside of the property is much better than on websites, these need to be updated as well as the appliance folder, simple instructions would be much more helpful. I couldn’t work out how to turn the radiators on nor the heater on the wall at Christmas and cold weather it wasn’t ideal. Again some instructions would have helped. If I was in Coniston again I’d rebook. We actually tried to book an extra night but no one got back to us.

We were very comfortable in this small but compact apartment.

It is is well situated, parking on the road outside and the bus stop just a step up the road. Walks in all directions so just perfect for us. We have been many times and really feel it is time the glasses were replaced, not one matched and also some of the crockery is chipped and should be replaced. We will happily return and thanks for the use of the apartment.

The property was cosy but did need abit of a reverb like anew carpet in living room as it was abit grubby and I thought we paid alittle over the ods as other poeple payed a lot less but we did have a lovely stay x

The property was very comfortable and well located.

There is a significant problem with the heat sensor system within this property. There is a note by the hob that says that the alarm may go off and will stay on if it’s triggered. I cooked on the first evening and the alarm went off. I opened all windows etc and it did not go off. In fact it was on for 2 hours plus in the whole building which disrupted the other flat and neighbours. I tried to call your helpline but got no answer. I left a message and received no response from you for our whole visit. We eventually found a phone number in the sensor system downstairs and called them. They are based in Chorley , 2 hours from the property! The noise was deafening making us leave the property as did our upstairs neighbours. We were both competing in a lake swim the next day and were very stressed about not being able to get rest before an early start. We also had the added expense of abandoning our dinner to go to a local pub instead. The engineer did arrive about 10pm. He was able to reset the alarm. This must be attended to by you landlords. It’s not good for them or their customers. It was a shame this tarnished the experience of staying at the swallows nest. I am very unlikely to return. Your helpline should also be reviewed as it did not help us in any way.

Lovely cosy appartment in centre of Coniston.

Clean, comfortable and well presented. Excellent shower. Street parking not a problem. 5 star review. A few more glasses, mugs and plates would result in dishwasher being used less frequently. Bath towels are quite small (labelled with another cottage).

Shallows nest is perfectly situated for walkers like ourselves,it is close to all the amenities in the centre of Coniston the only problem is that the best pub is the furthest away the Sun at the top of the hill

The bed needs some padding round the legs, as not much room to pass by the bed.

Very painful if you bump into them. I packed our towels round them. Also the bottom section of the bedroom window is cloudy, which spoils the view. But never the less, a lovely place to stay.

We had a good time in Coniston.

The location of the flat is ideal for hiking. The flat was clean,but there were a few things we missed in the flat: salad bowl, bowls and lids for the microwave, salad servers, bowls for mixing, toothbrush tumbler, butter dish, several chopping boards, smaller towels to supplement the large towels, a few more cups and some plastic storage container would be also convinient.

Great location for us and accommodation very comfortable.

We didn't find the 'bins' info etc until we were leaving as its in the 'Appliances' folder and we didn't look in that, there was no other info about the local pubs, cafes, food shops etc. The only slight thing was that we would have appreciated a tea bag or spoon of coffee when we arrived but there was absolutely nothing and thats quite unusual nowadays and we only had 3 cups so had to wash after each use - again not life changing, but more crockery would be great and I see it's been mentioned previously. I wonder if daytime parking would be an issue in peak times but we had no trouble. But, that doesn't take away from a great stay in a beautiful part of the lakes, this area having not been visited by us greatly before.

This is a lovely, well maintained apartment in a great location.

We only gave a three for comfort because we found the bed too soft for us . All in all a nice stay.

Unfortunately, our stay was not the relaxing one we had hoped for.

Online the swallows nest appeared far more suited tom our needs than the bluebird loft we had stayed in before. On arrival, the toilet was noisily continually on flush. Whilst we appreciate that we arrived on a bank holiday and instant maintenance would be difficult, we were left feeling less than cared about. Sykes team did what they could, but we had a running toilet for the whole of that night. It would have been nice if the owner had at least got in touch, apologised and promised to do what they could the next day. But unfortunately, no. Nothing. We were left with what amounted to Chinese water torture for the night on what might be the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on. So soft, we were almost on the boards. I joked that we should have got the air bed we had camped on before we arrived and slept on that. I should have done. Both my wife and I have very uncomfortable backs upon our return. Fast forward to Wednesday I think and whilst cooking dinner the smoke alarm went off. The door of the alarm unit is broken and I was unable to turn the alarm off. I also could not at first get any answer from the alarm maintenance company or Sykes. No answer from the maintenance company and every Sykes phone number went to the same answer phone message, even the emergency number. Eventually we found one that asked us to leave a message. Which we did and eventually we got a call back. Eventually we also got through to the alarm company too and they came and stopped the alarm. It had been going for an hour and a half. We had half the neighbourhood coming to see what was going on. Never mind eating a cold dinner in the front garden. It was a good job it wasn't raining. On top of all that, it happened again on Sunday morning. We were that upset that we decided to go home a day early and whilst cooking breakfast off the alarm went. Even though I had been shown by the technician how to turn the alarm off I still had to do it three times because the door was still unrepaired. This holiday had its redeeming features, but they weren’t the swallows nest.

Really enjoyed our stay very clean and comfortable But quite a few maintenance hote Main thing is the shower not draining properly and the lobby light where washer is also the light on washer where flashing while in use Dishwasher not working properly Few bulbs need changing No kitchen scissors and not even a extra bin bag

This was another enjoyable stay at Swallows Nest, but we really feel it’s time for more crockery etc to be reinstated after the covid experience.

Very warm, cosy and comfortable accommodation.

The light in the apartment hallway didn't work which made entry/exit difficult but much more disappointing was the lack of a remote control for the DVD player - this had clearly been mentioned in the visitors book many months ago but there was no replacement.

There were no controls on the DVD unit apart from play, pause, and eject so we could only watch the first part of any multipart DVD. Really enjoyed the apartment otherwise which is why only facilities are marked as poor.

Kitchen could do with more cutlery & mugs. Also no facilities for dishwasher so like salt or tablets

Thanks so much for allowing us to stay at Swallows Nest. We truly had the best time. One thing that was worrying was the shower. It doesn’t drain properly and you could be in there less than ten minutes before the shower tray is full of water. Not sure if it’s the water pressure or a problem with the drain.

What a lovely little gem right in the middle of town with everything you need for your holiday very lovely and comfortable apartment no need to drive if you don't want to lovely walks right on your doorstep would highly recommend Swallos Nest and will definitely be back

Enjoyed another visit here in this comfortable apartment.

Only downside it is short on crockery and cutlery but we managed.

A lovely apartment centrally placed we would happily book again.

can I just ask that the dinner knives are replaced they are impossible to use

Could do with a bit more crockery in kitchen.

Only 2 plates, 2 bowls, no Pyrex dishes, No pudding basin. Just means you have to use the dishwasher after every meal and it's only a quarter full. So inefficient. Costing more in electricity.

Absolutely perfect holiday let.

Extremely clean, perfect location, plenty of places to eat on your doorstep. First time to the Lakes, just beautiful England at its best, we will definitely be back.

Great flat in a great location, we had no issues whatsoever, but i will suggest the owner provide recycling bins.

There was no facilities in the village to recycle either to our knowledge. In these times of doing our bit for the environment these facilities should be provided....

Great little apartment, superbly positioned within the village, close to all amenities.

The listing said there was a lake view and that wasn't so.

In fact the view from the front of the house was onto other houses. The living/dining area was very cramped, especially when compared to the size of the bedroom and bathroom. It would be better to have a bin under the sink rather than next to the dining table which is extremely unhygienic.

Good location. We always managed to park on the road outside even though it was half term and very busy. The selection of pans was OK but no casserole dishes. It was a shame the bistro next door is currently closed (not even takeaway when we were there) but it was only 100m walk to The Crown pub.

4 days of rain of varying intensity made the lack of drying facilities apparent.

Otherwise the accommodation provided a relaxing bolt hole the cost of which at £517 would have allowed us 10 days bed and breakfast with sunshine in a 3 star hotel in Greece....just saying.

I think the cafe has changed in the directions.

This could confuse some people. Some of the details are missing in the flat-so the wifi code is only on a scrappy bit of paper for instance. Cooker tends to auto switch off if the time is not entered. A separate note for this would be useful. Walking from the flat is perfect-this is a real asset with even bus stops nearby and free parking is nearby.

There’s no parking, so a warning to be prepared to pay £3 for 2 hrs at the car park across the road, or some other helpful advice, would be good.

The last email we got, a week before arriving, said the host would be ‘available to greet you from 17:00’ so we expected to get the keys from a person. The number on the email was a call centre and completely unhelpful and it took much exhausted searching on the doorstep through email archives (no internet till we got inside!) and the fortunate assistance of some other chance-met guests to figure out the ‘keysafe’ system and get it to work. We’d have given up on it if we weren’t stranded and desperate by now. Very sticky and awkward to open, needed 3 hands! Not a bad apartment though pricey, maybe that’s just the Lake District for you. Nice bathroom, good location, decent hot water system. Kitchen was adequate EXCEPT oven didn’t work (wasted a whole frozen meal) which is poor for a not-cheap self-catering apartment. The ‘appliance book’ didn’t have an oven page. Stove top worked. Cafetière spout was broken, which we didn’t notice till after we made/wasted the coffee. The bedroom was nice (good view out the window) though the bed was uncomfortably soft for our taste. We had to strip the bed and bag up all the towels and linens (supposedly due to covid !?), as well as put all the crockery/cutlery/pans in the dishwasher before leaving, which was ok (if not quite expected at the price) except you also have to be gone by 9am! We didn’t try the TV so can’t comment. Wi-fi was good.

Swallows nest was a perfect base for our time in the Lake District.

The village has plenty of nice pubs and restaurants within 5 minutes walk. The cottage was excellent and exceeded our expectations. It had all the facilities required for our stay, nice bedroom bathroom e.t.c. Plenty of books, leaflets on Lake District and some games. Would definitely stay there again

I was very comfortable there during my stay, and wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I shall certainly be staying there again.

Your information states that Donald Campbell's restored Bluebird car is in the Ruskin Museum in Coniston and it isn't.

We would however recommend Swallows Nest in Coniston which is a modern comfortable apartment close to all the amenities.

Lovely flat and great location

this was our 2nd time at this property and it is well situated within the village and extremely clean and tidy

Very comfortable and well equipped property in an excellent location for restaurants and Coniston Water.

Location and the cosy, compact nature of the accommodation.

The Bistro 'Steam next door was outstanding as were the pubs next in the village for hospitality, beet and the quality of food. There's excellent access to Coniston Waters and lots of interesting walks. We're looking forward to returning soon, hopefully during Easter.

This was my second visit to Swallow Nest and it was just as good the second time as it was the first.

I very much enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend it. Very comfortable and clean accommodation. Quiet. Close to shops, eateries and 15min walk to the lake. Lucked out on the weather again! Great relaxing holiday!

Apartment was in the perfect location, clean and very well presented.

Coniston itself is lovely. Climb the old man, it’s hard but you will be very pleased with yourself. The artisan bakery for pizza, fantastic. Little cafe next to apartment perfect for breakfast if you can’t be bothered to cook your own. We would recommend Swallows nest and Sykes definitely and we will be back.

Outdoor table & chairs are in front small "garden" very near to the 2 refuse bins and looking onto a reasonably busy road - not ideal.

But flat was very comfortable, especially the bed, and overall well equipped.Excellent powerful shower.

Swallows Nest is just perfect for a retreat in the lovely village of Coniston.

The flat was very well equipped and the owners have thought of everything from an apron for the kitchen and a clothes brush!

The kitchen had been left with washing up liquid, dish washer tablets, and a few tea bags and coffee. The bed is comfy and there's plenty of hot water after a long day's hiking. Since it is in the centre of Coniston, shops and pubs are only a few minutes walk away.

We loved this holiday, a home from home.

Great location and lovely local pubs and restaurants. There were several walking routes and leaflets showing us what activities were available in the local area.
