What guests are saying
The Writing Room is part of the Sawrey Knotts large complex in a very popular tourist area and close to the Windermere ferry and Hawkshead.
It has a ground-floor apartment, relatively spacious and clean, with a large lounge and good settees with a TV and nice views. The TV and internet can be intermittent and often switch off, so beware. The kitchen is medium-sized and has ample facilities. Please be aware that the fridges are tightly jammed in and the doors need pushing in firmly, especially if used by young kids. The double bed and en-suite are upstairs, spacious and clean, while the downstairs superking bedroom is below ground with steep stairs. It is clean but does have a cold, cellar-like smell even in hot weather. You may need to turn on the radiators to dry the towels, etc. The shower unit is small, so if you're a large person, forget it. If you have the shower on full force, the drain cannot cope and may overflow. Close by is the Cuckoo Brow pub hotel, and the staff and food are great. The Ferry down the road to Windermere is convenient, but beware it now costs £8 for a standard car. The road route to Hawkshead and Ambleside can take some 20 minutes, and in narrow parts with oncoming vehicles, as always, can be a bit of a nightmare, so beware if it's your first visit in this area. In Near Sawrey, the Osprey Lakeside cafeteria and walk is also now open again and a nice spot in good weather. So, as always, the trip was pleasant, but the tourism and traffic on weekends can be a real burden.
The accommodation is very large, but one of the bedrooms being in the basement was unexpected.
The wifi was not working correctly and was essentially unusable. The heating made a lot of noise and required continual adjustment to stop it making very odd sounds. However, these were minor annoyances and we otherwise enjoyed out stay in The Writing Room
Had a lovely time at this ideal base for exploring this beautiful part of the country.
Only issue for owners to sort was that dishwasher was not cleaning crockery /glasses etc used properly. Had to wash twice, which took some time as long cycles. I had brought my electric mountain bike to use but would be helpful for outside power source for charging , though in this case I used extention through the window. Otherwise comfortable and warm cottage that would use again
