Little Crake Howe

Stayed at Little Crake Howe for 2 weeks 10th - 24th July and had a fabulous time.

The cottage is larger than we were expecting and the views are jaw dropping. We loved looking out of our windows at hills, green fields, sheep, cows and horses. The cottage is so homely with a very well stocked kitchen, comfy sofas & beds & pillows. Pipping hot shower and an electronic skylight in the bedrooms and bathrooms to let in air and light. Its on a working farm but we never heard anything other than owls and slept like logs. It also has a shared garden, utility room with washing machine & dryer, rotary airer and pegs. This was our 1st time visiting the Lake District and we thoroughly enjoyed going out for the day then coming back to the gorgeous cottage to chill and cook tea. We were blessed with amazing hot sunny weather the whole time with not a drop of rain. We would often sit outside the front on the bench having a cuppa and having a laugh and chat with John (farmer & owner). He would always ask what we had been up to and laugh at the number of miles we had walked. If we were in the garden or outside and Hazel saw us she would chat and ask about our day and where we had been. John & Hazel are very hard working and the most kind, friendliest people we have met and I would most definitely recommend their cottage to friends & family to stay. We have had the most amazing holiday and didn't want to leave and come home. We are missing the views, cows, sheep and banter with John. Thank you John & Hazel for the most memorable holiday. We loved the bungalow, it was well equipped and everything was comfortable from the beds to the sofa's and the shower in the ensuite was superb for power and warmth.

There is no window in the twin room is the only downside that our friends commented on, it does have a velux window in the ceiling, but this can't be open when it rains - which it did a lot - so they had no air circulation. In the 'master' bedroom there is a door which leads onto the patio. To be clear it is absolutely situated ON a working farm, not near to, nor close to - ON it (which I loved because I got to see the new lambs through a crack in the side of the barn and the cows before they were covered for the bad weather). Yesterday morning the muck spreader was being filled up with the animal waste right outside our kitchen window - this didn't bother me but my friend wasn't impressed. If cows mooing in the shed (which is located behind the walls of the bedrooms) or the smell of rural life, the noise of the workers vehicles from 6.30am is likely to bother you then potentially this is not the house for you. But I LOVED walking to the field closest to the house to see the new lambs in the field with their mums. The thing that bothered all of us somewhat was the closeness of the static caravans which pretty much surround the house on the 3 sides that don't have the farm buildings. Some of them are as close to the house as 25 foot. We were lucky that the majority were not being used, but if they were being used and the weather was good and people were sitting outside it would feel very much like you were holiday on a caravan park. Unfortunately they are in every sightline from the house EXCEPT when standing at the kitchen window looking right, so this does spoil (and in some places completely block out) the beautiful view of the countryside. The house has a nice patio area - but again, overlooked by caravans and it is next to the 'shared' garden, so if there are children in the caravans (I don't know if they are privately owned to be honest or rented out) then they could be kicking a football around right outside whilst you are having a cuppa or glass of wine on the patio. I am a bird lover and there is no shortage of bird life around the farm to keep you engaged, including Swallows that nest on the house eves and in the barn and lots of tits, finches at least one wren and a few other visitors so I LOVED the wildlife aspect of this farm. But I did worry that when I was using my binoculars people in the caravans might think I was looking at them! (For the above reasons I have marked down the accuracy of the listing because I don't think it makes enough of a point about the closeness and impact of the farm or the caravan site.)

It’s a beautiful property in every respect, the views from the windows of the fells was lovely.

The property was great plenty of space and the owners were very nice so helpful. We loved our stay there and will happily go back to such a lovely place.

This beautifully maintained and comfortable cottage is situated a distance from the main road in tranquil countryside.

The closeness of the farm is not a disadvantage nor the Lodges nearby. Plenty of personal space around the cottage to enjoy sitting out and parking the car.

We were made to feel very welcome and the cottage had everything you would need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. The view from the kitchen window is amazing and there are so many lovely walks to follow from the cottage. I would certainly recommend anyone staying here to relax and unwind.

Beautiful place we loved every minute of being there.

The owners are friendly and if there was anything we need help with they are happy to help. Would recommend this place to friends and family. We didn’t want to come home. We will definitely be booking here again.

Amazing stay with our 2 grand children.

They loved the out door space. We had our granddaughters gymnastic track mat with us and she spent hours out doors. We took out door games with us and they loved it. Accommodation was perfect throughout. Loved the views and the sheep in the background. Adorable Twig the dog who was calm and relaxed around us. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.

We enjoyed watching the workings of the farm. The surrounding countryside was beautiful and peaceful. The cottage was well equipped and furnished. Beds were comfy but we thought the sofas needed cleaning. John and Hazel made us very welcome.

Very well furnished and equipped, with everything you could possibly need. If you want to get out and about it's a great base, and if you want to simply enjoy the property and have a relaxing day in, it's perfect for that, rain or shine. Would definitely visit again. Little Crake Howe is situated within some stunning countryside; it's quiet and peaceful but with beautiful scenery all around.

The property is spacious, clean, tidy and well stocked with everything you need and conveniently located just a short drive to Kendal. It is very convenient for some of Wainwright's "Outlying Fells" especially the last one in the book, The Bannisdale Horseshoe" . We had a fab week, thank you.

The best cottage we have been in.

Everything you could need in a self catering cottage was provided. The underfloor heating was a bonus on a cold November day. John & Hazel are both very welcoming and friendly.

Fantastic property, accurately listed- well equipped with everything we needed, Owners very accommodating, helped us when we had problems with our car, although on a working farm we really weren’t troubled with any noise and it didn’t disrupt our stay in anyway, a lovely location that placed us 25-30 minutes away from most well known locations, would return and recommend to others too!

Cottage was in a great location and well equipped, especially with young children in mind. Hosts were so friendly and helpful! One of the only cottages that we would definitely return to!

The views were stunning and although was on a working farm it wasn’t noisy. Both John and Hazel the owners were lovely people and very helpful . Will definitely return for another visit.

Thank you to John for his hospitality and chats. Twig, Blade, Thorn and Bramble added extra entertainment for the little un. Cottage is lovely with high ceilings and space. Getting to and from property; be prepared for tight lanes, however, traffic is minimal. Some lovely walks and views from the property. A great base to explore the southern and western lakes.

The cottage is superbly appointed and comfortable.

I could think of nothing else that could resonably be provided. This was especially beneficial during our stay due to the appalling weather for April. It's why they have lakes in Cumbria though !

You won't find better than this cottage in the Lake District.

It's both modern and rustic and really cosy and warm. The views are amazing and the location is great; we loved Kendal and found some fantastic walks both locally and a short drive away. Staying on a working farm was an amazing experience for our children, seeing how many lambs had been born each morning and getting to meet them. The owners are a lovely, welcoming family who were happy to answer all of our children's questions. We'll definitely be back and will be recommending the cottage to friends and family.

The cottage is beautifully furnished with everything you could possibly need and all the comforts of a well appointed home.

It is spacious, yet cosy and is ideally located for exploring North and South Lakeland. The peace and quiet offers time to appreciate the wonderful views and the owners could not have been more welcoming.

Just retured from Little Crake Howe holiday cottage, lovely cottage only thing i did not like was the toilet roll in the en-suit was in a holder on the floor would have liked it fixed to the wall, easy to reach than to stretch down to the floor.

Little Crake Howe is a beautiful cottage, 5 star in every way, situated on a working farm and hosted by John & Hazel.

Beautiful cottage, superbly appointed with amazing 'vistas' all round, a great log-fire to keep all and sundry cosy and warm throughout, and independently controlled underfloor heating, to accommodate your room (bedroom/bathroom) individually, amidst the total peace and quiet.

Both John and Hazel are great hosts, should you require advice on anywhere to go?.....as well as all the information detailed within the 'house' information book or just sit-in and chill-lax with a good book, a large glass of wine or G & T in front of the fire,...what's not to like?...lol.

The cottage was very comfortable and clean and had everything we needed. Even though situated on a working farm we had a very peaceful stay. The cottage was also well situated for visiting Windermere and Ambleside. We certainly hope to return here.

The owners were extremely friendly and had a beautiful elderly dog called Twig. All in all, a very pleasant experience.

Wonderful cottage, all the comforts you could want in a peaceful and beautiful location.

The owners are the nicest people you could meet. This was our third visit and we will hope to return as soon as possible. A great base for walking with easy access to quieter parts of the fells which are every bit as stunning as the hotspots (Windermere and Ambleside are just an easy drive away). A very short hop to Kendal for the supermarket and lots of great independent shops and cafes. Thank you for another great holiday.

What a fantastic place to stay.

Beautiful cottage in lovely location. Quite remote but we really liked that. Nothing to hear but birds, sheep and sometimes John's tractor! John and Hazel are the perfect hosts and we felt very sad to leave. Twig the dog and Blade the cat provide lots of cuddle time. Cottage was spacious and well furnished...it lacked nothing. We will return for sure!

Wonderful cottage, everything was top quality, comfortable furniture and beds, kitchen had everything you need.

Property was lovely and warm in fact so warm we turned the heating off. Nice seating area on the patio and a large lawned area where our granddaughter could play. Easy access to all the tourist areas and easy to get to various lakes and towns. Highly recommended, we would certainly return.

The only criticism is of the external photos which do not show the property right next to a farm yard ( not smelly) and in a caravan site.

Lovely detached building in a great farmyard countryside location.

Well positioned to access all the lake district. Furnished and fitted out to a high standard. Friendly and helpful owners . We stay in a lot of holiday cottages and this has to be the best. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Will hopefully be returning next year.

Beautiful Place

This is a fantastic cottage.

It has everything you could possibly need. Lots of little extra touches which were really appreciated. Great quality towels and bedding as well. Its off the beaten track so its quiet and has some nice local walks but also Kendal is only a short drive away. Would definitely recommend and book again. Thanks! :)

Fantastic cottage in a perfect location to access the Lakes.

Property finished to a really high standard and has everything you need for a relaxing stay. Our kids loved feeding the horses in the field next door and being next to a working farm there was lots for them to look at and enjoy during our stay. We will certainly be returning to Little Crake Howe in the near future to continue exploring the area.

Warm and cosy with beautiful views, lots of space and the lovely owners have thought of everything. We felt totally relaxed, thank you so much! Perfect location too - you can either take a short drive to the busy hubs of Kendal/Windermere/Ambleside or walk the quieter fells nearby which are stunning. Lots of great places to eat out in Kendal. Fabulous in every way, we can't wait to go back.

We had an absolutely wonderful week in a dream cottage have nothing to fault cosy and tastefully furnished a proper home from home the hosts are warm and helpful with regular visits from twig the dog ,supermarkets etc three miles away stunning views from every window.

Accommodation at Little Crake Howe provided for an excellent week's holiday, even if we hadn't travelled off site to the surrounding Lake District, because the quality of the accommodation, and its setting, surrounded by a vista of hills and mountains beyond, was the perfect tonic.

The cottage exceeded all our expectations, the view from the kitchen window made washing up a pure joy! It was very comfortable and clean, had everything we needed, and was fully accessible for everyone, however their mobility affects them. With a lovely ramped entrance, as well as steps for the more able. Extra wide doors, and accessible shower and bathroom. We can not think of anything negative at all. As for Twig your beautiful little dog, she was absolutely adorable, we could easily have brought her home with us, she was so welcoming and a real cutie. The cottage was the nicest if it’s type that we have stayed in.

The location is superb with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. It is ideally situated for exploring the Lakes and other points of interest. The owners are very friendly and welcoming.

Idyllic accommodation in superb location What an amazing cottage!

Spacious, immaculately clean & cosy, and equipped with everything you could conceivably need for a holiday. Traditional & rustic in appearance and feel, it was also bristling with mod cons, right down to the self-closing blinds and skylights in the bedrooms. The setting was perfect. We enjoyed being on an authentic working farm, but at the same time were overawed by the tranquillity and stunning, unspoilt scenery in all directions. What a joy to wake up to the sight of swallows swooping and rabbits scurrying every morning! As for the location just NE of Kendal, it enabled us to access the southern & northern lakes with equal ease. A couple of favourite excursions entailed taking the gondola across Coniston Water to Ruskin's beautiful retreat at Brantwood and eating out on the garden terrace, whilst on another day we followed paths around Rydal to Rydal Hall and Wordsworth's house at Rydal Mount, making a lucky find for lunch at the Giggling Goose sited beside the beck & watermill in Ambleside. On returning to the cottage each evening we loved venturing out again after dinner to explore the awesome country lanes and bridleways that extend for miles around and without - hardly ever - encountering a car. Thanks, John & Hazel, for being such friendly & helpful hosts!

This was by far, one of the best cottages that we have stayed in.

Every detail was thought of, from the Smart TV to the amazing underfloor heating in the bathrooms, it is modern however keeping hold of the rustic, cozy cottage feel. The location was amazing, beautiful views and friendly farm animals, not to forget Twig the dog! We are already planning our next visit! Thank you very much John and Hazel

The care taken to minimise the impact of Covid19 and protect guests is impressive. Set within easy reach of Kendal and most amenities the cottage enjoys spectacular views of the mountains, provides easy access to local walks. Wonderful setting on a working farm convenient to the great walks and villages of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dale's Cottage exceptionally well furnished and comfortable- for all climates.

The cottage was just perfect.

Views from kitchen sink were glorious, Hazel and John respected our privacy but were happy to chat too. Loved watching the silaging too! And Twig the dog happily wandering in to the cottage was a treat.

! The facilities and added extras of bread, milk & biscuits made it such a welcoming place!! We had a stress free holiday, apart from the weather, the property more than made up for it. We would definitely recommend it to anyone and would love to return again very soon.

For a little cottage there is plenty of space for 4 people.

Nice open living area. Bathroom is big, en-suite in master bedroom which we didn’t know.

This is the second time we have stayed at poppy Farm We stayed in November 2017 and the location and holiday was amazing.

We have recently stayed last week at the end of August. I think it must have been the summer weather that has bought out a lot of flies. Each time we got up or arrived back after a day out there were more and we spent most of the time getting rid of them.

Little Crake Howe is a lovely cottage - spotlessly clean with tasteful furnishings.

Hazel and John are on site in the nearby farm and welcomed us warmly. There is a private patio but the garden is shared with others staying in caravans also on site. We had a very restful and enjoyable stay. Little Crake Howe is well positioned for exploring the Lakes. A delightful holiday home!

A lovely luxury short break in the lake district.

The cottage has everything you can imagine and more. It is clean and extremely well appointed. An excellent location being close enough to the main road to make it relatively easy to find while being far enough away to ensure real peace and quiet. An excellent base to visit the lake district. John and Hazel were both extremely friendly and helpful and we would happily recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a peaceful holiday, we will certainly be going back.

We had a great week staying in Little Crake Howe.

John, Hazel and Twigg (Twigg being our regular visitor every day) were excellent hosts, being made very welcome from the minute we arrived. We even had a newborn lamb in the garden which was a lovely sight when you opened the curtains in the morning.

We stayed at this cottage for 4 nights, it’s a beautifully presented cottage and in a lovely location.

It’s quiet and peaceful within easy reach of Kendal and surrounding areas in the Lake District, would definitely stay again

Little Crake Howe is a super base for exploring the Lake District.

Cottage is of a very high standard. The owners John and Hazel were very welcoming. The coffee and biscuits on arrival were just what we needed after a long journey. Would love to return sometime soon.

The cottage was lovely & fitted out to a very high standard.

It was also very well equipped with everything you would need for a self-catering stay with handy things like cling film/foods bags/fairy liquid etc which you don't often get supplied. The kitchen cupboards were full of herbs & spices etc & the milk, bread & biscuits were a nice welcome too. There was also a large supply of local maps, books of various walks & other things to do. The owners were very friendly & on hand if needed. All in all it was a good base to explore the Lake District and to get away from it all!

The cottage is spacious, comfortable and warm and is immaculately presented with lovely furniture and features.

Both bathrooms are lovely and have powerful showers which were much appreciated after long walks. The kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of crockery and cutlery and has a good range of pots and pans. The cottage is on a working farm and John and Hazel were both very friendly and made us feel very welcome. The milk, biscuits, bread, wood for the fire and fresh flowers on arrival were much appreciated.

Really well equipped clean and comfortable. Great place for young children, the owner was welcoming and happy to let our young granddaughter see his cows and sheep in the barn. Big garden with patio and seating and a trampoline, bit rainy when we were there but would be great in good weather. Would highly recommend for a get away from it all break.

The cottage was absolutely amazing! As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a lovely clean and fresh cottage. Milk, biscuits and wine was there for our arrival which came in handy after the long drive. John and Hazel were the perfect hosts and made us feel extremely welcome. Pictures of the cottage do not do it justice... at night the cottage comes to life with all its unique features and beautiful lighting. Although there is so much to do in the area we were content in enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and building family memories in front of the fire. The cottage is equipped to such a high standard it really was like home from home. We shall definitely be returning again and again! We all felt very sad leaving as it really was a magical stay in a magnificent setting. Would highly recommend to anyone! The children enjoyed playing on the fields and watching the animals on the farm. All you need and more!

We have stayed in many cottages over the years and this one really is outstanding and one of the two best ones we have ever experienced.

Very friendly and helpful owners, a superb quiet location with great views but easy driving distance to Kendal and elsewhere in the Lake District. The cottage is warm and cosy for a winter break, with underfloor central heating throughout and a wonderful logburner in the lounge area. It is beautifully furnished and decorated and everything is very clean. The starter packs re a few food items and also for the logburner were much appreciated. We were so impressed with the cottage that we have already vowed to return in the future. Thank you, John and Hazel, for our stay in your beautiful cottage.

Lovely modern cottage with great facilities.

The owners were very welcoming and we had a memorable holiday.

We have just returned from a week's stay at Little Crake House, what a shame we could not have stayed for longer, we were all sad to leave.

The cottage is beautiful, it is well furnished with quality items right through, the bed's are so comfortable we would have liked to have brought them home, the photo's really do not do it justice, go & stay & you will know what I mean. The views are outstanding, there is plenty of parking & a lovely garden. It is well placed to visit the Lakes & also the Yorkshire Dales.

Little Crake is a fantastic cottage, just outside the Lake District National Park and about 10 minutes drive from Kendal.

Everything was immaculate when we arrived, and our lovely hosts John and Hazel had provided some basic necessities including milk, eggs, bread, biscuits and a bottle of wine. The cottage was beautifully warm with plenty of hot water, so that (sadly!) even in late September we didn't need to light the log burner. The cottage is more spacious than it seems in the photos, and some nice touches include a portable touch screen that operates the Velux roof windows and blinds. They even close automatically when it rains! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage.

Little Crake Howe was as near perfect for my family's needs as I could have dreamt!

The quality of the furnishings and fittings was excellent. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful - the whole thing was just great! I will certainly be staying in Little Crake Howe again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A shining example of how holiday cottages should be.

Luxurious, homely with a real rustic touch. Set in a farm with superb views. Fantastic walks literally over the next field. Superb hosts and friendly people also on site. A great location to go venturing to other places of interest. We had a fantastic week here, and we will be booking to come back next year. Well done to John and Hazel for building something special.
