My 19th consecutive year in Grasmere at half term and my 8th property.
This is by far the least well equipped and not at all worth the almost £900 I paid. Parking is a misnomer- a tiny car only so if you don’t have a Fiat 500 or the patience to move your car around the village, be prepared to add £45 for a week’s parking. We arrived to a freezing house in a rainstorm and there’s nowhere to dry wet clothes: few hooks, no boot spaces- for 4 people in a wet week. Radiators in bathroom and bedroom not especially efficient ( improves after 2 days with retained heat)but upstairs very warm once heating worked out. I like a cold room to sleep in but not at a cost of soggy clothes. Old furniture in rentals is fine but bedside drawer front came off in my hand and showed many signs of previous gluing. Kitchen: there’s a horrible rusty vegetable rack used to seemingly store dustpan and brushes ( and vegetables). Then , blunt knives/ peelers, egg cups only for 2, a broken glass hidden at back of cupboard. We got a burnt hand from pans that conduct heat with no pan handlers. All rather like my old grans which could possibly be termed ‘charming’ if it wasn’t for the price tag- £880 - a premium price for a not premium product. The Internet drops out, there were no heating instructions. Bring a multiple adapter if you have lots of stuff to charge as there are minimal plug sockets as is the way with old properties. I could go on and on . If it was my first time in the village , I might think low water pressure in the shower or flaky internet are village quirks but they’re not. I’ve never left a property in Grasmere and written a negative review before such is the extent of my ire. I want to be balanced so the location is great, beds are comfy and upstairs gets really warm and there’s a decent dishwasher.
Lovely cottage right in the heart of Grasmere.
Our Golf fitted in the parking space (tight-but do-able). Handy to have a bath after long walks. Everything we needed in the kitchen and good to have a dishwasher. Picked a walk from the walks folder I would not have otherwise done so thanks for that! Bins were chock-full so I used the bins at the red bank car park on leaving, probably need a better system there.
Great little cottage in the heart of Grasmere.
Very, very quiet and peaceful. Although it is a bit outdated, this adds to its charm. The beds are really comfortable, and the kitchen is well equipped for basic cooking. However, remember to open the windows when cooking, as the extractor fan isn’t particularly powerful. The central heating smart panel is very easy to use, and the cottage gets warm really quickly. The narrow parking space worked well for us. We drive a BMW 3 Series, and I managed to park both forwards and by reversing. However, I did need to fold the mirrors in to get past the tightest part of the driveway. There are plenty of walks right on the doorstep. Overall, we had a very good experience. If I ever return to Grasmere, I’ll definitely be staying here again.
