I broke my toe on the bed leg in the front bedroom, found the space beside the bed quite tight

Well equipped with everything you need plus extras. Everything was top quality. There was even a guitar to play which had been tuned.

  • "We had a fantastic week staying in Berts Cottage which was immaculately clean and superbly stylish."

The location was perfect for walking in beautiful scenery without the crowds often encountered in the Lake District. It is also surrounded by pretty villages and Appleby has an abundance of options for food and drink. It was perfect in every aspect, thank-you!

Very well equipped and with delightful views. Well-placed for some interesting days out. Seeing a pair of red squirrels on the lane leading up to the cottage was an added bonus.

  • "Really clean and tidy in the property."

There was an unexpected leak on boiler but Martin and carol came Sunday morning at 10:00am after a call at 10pm Saturday night and fixed the problem. Cannot recommend enough the cottage and the owners as excellent and a lovely experience. This was our 2nd stay and we will absolutely be back again.

  • "My partner and I are extremely grateful to the owners for letting us stay in their delightful cottage."

We had a superb time using Berts cottage as a base from which to explore and left feeling well rested. We couldn’t have wished for a better place and felt extremely comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the extra little nick knacks and home comforts provided and the cottage felt like a home-from-home. This is an exceptionally well-appointed cottage and we were pleasantly surprised that even in the midst of this pandemic, the owners had provided everything we could have wanted and the cottage was spotlessly clean. We hope to return to this part of the world in the future and to stay again in the cottage if it is available. We are also happy to recommend Berts Cottage and Sykes to our family and friends.

  • "We absolutely loved, loved, loved the cottage."

It was just as portrayed on your website - it was the loveliest cottage I have stayed in and plan to stay there again. We weren't blessed with the best of weather (sun showers every day and heavy rain at night) but because the cottage was so cosy it didn't matter in the slightest.

It was brilliant value for money given time of year and proximity to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North Pennine Area of Natural Beauty.

  • "Excellent cottage in excellent location."

We were blessed with good weather so were out and about every day. The cottage had some quirky artefacts which added to the interest and enjoyment. It's a pity there wasn't a picture window to enjoy the view from inside the cottage as on a cold, damp day you wouldn't benefit from the lovely patio and the rooms are rather dark. Very trendy, good quality kitchen equipment, though a teapot would have been appreciated. Beautiful surrounding countryside but not too far from amenities at Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. Ideal location for the Lakes and the Dales.

  • "Wonderful cottage, in fab location."

Great walking, waterfalls and hills. Peace quiet and gorgeous views, everything you could want inside and outside of the cottage, warm fluffy blankets for sunset watching with a glass in hand. Toasty fire, and snuggly sofas, full of lovely quirky things, felt like home. We WILL be back. Thank you

  • "We had a wonderful week, helped by the weather!"

The cottage worked well for 4 adults although storage in the second bedroom is limited. Unfortunately the file of details was not at all obvious and we only found it (under the coffee table) on the penultimate day so at first we struggled a bit to find lights and with the cooker etc. The location was brilliant, we did Durham,York, Hadrian’s Wall ,The Lakes and the Appleby to Ribblehead section of the Settle to Carlisle railway all in the week.

  • "Bert's Cottage is a gem among the jewels of the local countryside."

The property is furnished to a very high standard but still feels homely. Locally sourced goods for comfort and pleasing on the eye mix with well known brand names in the kitchen but the whole property has a warm and cosy feel to it; it was hard to pack up and go home. Situated where it is, Bert's Cottage gives you access to a range of attractive places such as Appleby, Orton, Sedbergh and Penrith, as well as the miles of stunning countryside just waiting to be explored. Delicious food is to be found almost everywhere and the friendliness of the locals adds to the pleasure of visiting. I am already looking at our diary to see where we can squeeze another visit in!

The location gave us exactly what we wanted - peace and quiet! We visited places we had not previously visited, including Appleby and Penrith, and we particularly enjoyed visiting Rutter Force waterfall, which we walked to from the cottage! Would definitely recommend Sykes Cottages and, in particular, Bert's Cottage.

  • "Berts Cottage is an excellent choice."

The location is wonderful - easy to reach places of interest and walks straight from the door. The quality of the furnishings and the fittings is really excellent - it felt like a real home, not a temporary holiday home fitted out with cheap IKEA furniture. Very highly recommended.

About the location

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
