What guests are saying
The accommodation is in a small hamlet but was easily accessible.
Plenty on site parking outside of the property. Entering the property there was a slight foist smell in a couple of the bedrooms which are on the ground floor along with the main bathroom. Upstairs there is the large living & dining area with plenty comfortable seating and a well equipped kitchen but possibly an air fryer could be an additional piece of equipment. Shame that there isn’t a toilet upstairs. The hot water was very hot and care had to be taken when using the shower. Due to the severe weather we had a power cut, the small torches would have been inadequate if the power had not come on when it did, more information and equipment could be provided in the event of an emergency as we were told by a neighbour that there often are power outages, ie: larger torches, wood for the fire. This property is ideal for families whatever the time of year, great location for exploring the Lake District and surrounding areas
We had a great week at Riven Oak.
Good parking and the enclosed Garden was perfect for our dog. On initial entry the ground floor does smell a bit damp and musty - but this is an old barn type building. After opening the windows and letting a bit of air flow it was absolutely fine. There is a dark patch on the ceiling of the master bedroom next to the wardrobe that the owner could do with addressing, but this looks relatively minor and didn't bother us. The upstairs living-room, kitchen and dining room is great for family time. We found it very relaxing. The outdoor table that's pictured was not in the garden when we visited, so we had to relocate the bench from the porch to have somewhere to sit. Again, not an issue but might warrant updating the photos.
We stayed at Sykes Cottage in Kendal and, to be honest, we were a bit concerned beforehand after reading a previous review about cleanliness and other issues.
On arrival, directions were straightforward and easy to follow. The cottage itself is old and full of character, so it does give a slightly worn first impression from the outside. However, once inside, we found it perfectly acceptable. The property was clean overall. There was a bit of dust here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary for an older cottage. It felt comfortable and well looked after. We had a really good stay. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed, although it is worth noting there is no freezer. The shower worked well, and we had no issues with heating or hot water. Overall, we had a lovely time and would happily stay again.
