Solway Cottage

The accommodation was nice but a few things let it down I feel.

definitely not 4 star but a 3.

The property in Powfoot was clean and tidy.

The village is a great location for taking the dog for walks along the beach. Powfoot golf course is also within reach of the property. The area is also local for sightseeing. The locals are very friendly. A pair of kitchen scissors ✂️ and a larger refuge bin should be provided replacing than small bin which is far too small. A wall clock wouldn’t go amiss in the sitting room. The seating area outdoors is uneven, requiring the flagstones levelled.

Solway is half a minute from the beach, and one minute from a pretty green with village walks and a leafy stream walk leading from it.

The garden is dog-safe. The locality is beautiful and unspoilt. Hill walks and forest walks in a 20-30 minute radius, a beach bar 3/4 mile away and cliff walks further along the coast. If walking is not your thing, there are castles around and there are interesting places in Dumfries.The cottage is clean, bright and comfortable and had everything we needed.

Was a beautiful relaxing holiday next to the coast.

Plenty of walks. Everything available at the cottage. Property totally enclosed with a small wall in some areas, tall wall in other. Short drive to shop. Would have no reason not to rebook for next year.

Peace Calm and warm even in a 75 mph storm.

Great wee place brilliant location. Thoughtfully set out. My wife loved the free bottle of wine, sweets. 3 miles from Annan and all the shops, including Tesco superstore. Lovely beach walks with the dogs. Great location.

This was a last minute booking and what a little gem!

!! Beautifully presented and fully equipped, this little cottage is right on the coast with views to Cumbria across the Firth. Unfortunately we had no heating for the first night...new batteries needed in central heating control but toasty after that. Lovely walks for us with our dog and a smashing cafe for a cuppa and a scone just over a mile from the cottage...the Sandpiper cafe and bar. The only downside I found was the smell from the oil fired heating. I don't know if this is usual for this type of heating but I found it quite overpowering... maybe something to look at for the owners...perhaps needs a new filter. We had to keep the kitchen door closed and it got overpowering when cooking or washing up.

Solway Cottage was lovely, really homely and warm, we had a really good time there.

Everything we needed was there. Would recommend to friends and family. Powfoot was such a lovely place and the neighbours were very helpful and friendly.

We were shocked at how dirty the oven and hob were.

It is the first thing you see when walking into the cottage, not a good first impression. We spent an hour cleaning the grill and top before we would use it. There was no way we were going to use the oven. I would consider the property had not been thoroughly cleaned from the previous occupancy. The drain in the shower was disgusting with lots of black mould and grime. As a note, the double bed is extremely high and my husband found it very difficult to get into bed( unsteady on his feet) therefore slept in a single bed in the other room, first time we have slept apart in our marriage. It would also be useful to have a clothes horse for drying clothes indoors in bad weather, as mentioned by several other guests in the comments book. The heating would randomly come on at various temperatures, sometimes at 18deg, others at 21deg in the middle of the night.

Cosy cottage, clean and tidy, the Welcome Pack was very welcome!

Thank you. Our little dog has poor sight so we took familiar rugs to lay on the wooden floors which I felt she may have slipped on. She settled the first night. The little entrance porch was handy for leaving boots and coats in. I sat out one evening, it was October! Pleasant area. If we visit again, which is very likely, two little niggles. I would take a non slip shower mat, non in the bathroom. Being able to lower the temperature on the heating would also be helpful. Having said that, we enjoyed our stay and will probably return, cottage nice and so convenient for beach. The village is a real little gem. Very community minded, printed leaflets of the local walks and local history for a honesty box donation. The history of the village very interesting.

Had a really relaxing week but would recommend a dish washer rather than the washing machine or provide T-Towels and pan scrubs ands drainer for the dish rack .

The cottage was really comfortable and good furnishings but found the height of the double bed challenging height wise .

Had a lovely few days at Solway Cottage, the weather wasn't too kind to us and we received bad news on our second last day so had to cut the holiday short by a night, not your fault.

Other than that a lovely comfortable cottage, loved the decor!! Great walks which the dog loved, so did we. Only thing was the grill pan in the cooker was extremely dirty so didn't use it.

We had a fabulous stay in Solway Cottage.

It was like a warm hug surrounding us as we walked in & that didnt change over the week of our stay. The welcome box was uber generous & much appreciated. The people in Proudfoot village were friendly & extremely helpful & The Sandpiper was excellent, very warm & welcoming. Only disappointment was the "beach" It is very hard going due to the rubble & stone & once the tide is out it is a mud flat rather than walkable sand. That said, there were plenty of local walks in woodland to enjoy & we did, daily. Thank you for a great week. We visited Rockcliffe & found an enchanting place with sand & sea that our Springer Basil really enjoyed - so did we. The forest of Ae was worth going to, to.

Excellent location for the beach and beautiful walks in the area.

Lovely bright living room and spacious bedrooms. We found the kind size bed too high and very firm so slept in the twin room. There wasn’t a lot of cupboard storage in the kitchen for food as we tend to bring everything with us but that’s a minor thing. Lovely big shower and plenty of hot water. The welcome basket was a lovely touch. The only thing we missed was a clothes airer as it was raining and we struggled to dry clothes. All in all a lovely little cottage we had a great time, thank you

The garden needs a complete overhaul /overgrown garden furniture broken and thrown under tree

Outside furniture upside down next to bin.

Bathroom smelled of urine. Bedside tables low but bed high. No real sea view although described as such. Good position in village. Lounge nicely furnished. Draining of dishes an issue.

Interior of cottage excellent ,outside area could do with a bit TLC.

Beautifully furnished cottage.

Loved the artwork,and the bed was really comfortable. Kitchen a little cramped and lacking in cupboard space, but otherwise everything was fine. The welcome box and dog treats were also appreciated. And if course the location was ideal for dog walking!

The cottage was presented well clean and comfortable could do with hooks on doors and a hand grip rail especially the front door the garden could do with some TLC?

We had a fabulous week at Solway Cottage.

This was our second stay in a few years. The upgrade to the cottage was fantastic and we will most definitely use again.

We absolutely loved Solway Cottage, it's clean well equipped and comfy furniture to relax on each evening.

A lovely welcome pack and we were also pleased with the secure outside space so we could leave doors open without worrying about our dog getting out. Powfoot is a lovely village and is a perfect base for exploring nearby locations with the added bonus of a beach just round the corner from the cottage.

Our 2nd stay at Solway Cottage.

Such as lovely, warm and homely cottage, we loved the Christmas decorations. Nice to catch up with the friendly locals again too. Some of whom remembered us from our last stay.

Had a lovely stay at Solway Cottage, for the end of October the weather was remarkably warm.

The cottage is nicely furnished and comfortable for two people and four legged friends are nicely catered for. Due to minor details cannot give it 5 stars for cleanliness - wine glasses had been put away dirty, crumbs on top of cooker, hand marks left on windows and some of the surfaces had not been dusted. Otherwise a nice place to relax.

Great nights sleep. So close to the beach. Friendly community, excellent pub with food and cafe at the caravan park. Very dog friendly. Planning to book for next year. And we saw the northern lights. Amazing

The cottage was clean and warm on arrival.

Had all we needed for the week. Lots of information for things to do in the area. Lovely location near the beach. Note, there are no shops in Powfoot so come prepared. Nearest supermarket etc is in Annan.

The welcome pack was a really lovely gesture and much appreciated, the only thing that let the holiday down was the cottage was exceptionally cold the only place you could get warm was in bed the thermostat was on 17% but I don’t think in the time we were there the heating came on once, so we tended to stay out as long as possible rather than try and keep warm

This is a nicely located property close to the sea, and with dedicated off-road parking.

It has an excellent bathroom with a decent shower. The kitchen is small but fine for a week. The bedrooms are small but OK & with plenty of hanging space & drawers. The lounge/diner is large & airy, but suffers from 2 weaknesses which should be remedied quickly. The first is there is only one lamp - so we had to move that to the dining table to eat in the evenings and then unplug it & move it back to the side of the sofa afterwards. A second lamp would cost very little but enhance the experience significantly. The worst feature of this property by a mile is the television. It is not a SMART, so it's not connectable to the Wi-Fi, and therefore it's impossible to connect to Netflix/Amazon Prime/BBC i-Player/X. It isn't even possible to connect your mobile to the set with wires - as the set is so old it only has the old video connections - no USB connections. This is really something the owner should address - these days everyone uses catch-up TV, and not having access to it was a negative. The welcome pack was nice & much appreciated too.

The cottage was easy to find, in a nice location but unfortunately the amount of dog hair on furniture and floors let it down, perhaps a hoover in the accommodation would allow owners of dogs to clean up after their dogs, we aren't dog owners and this was not how I intended spending my holiday.

The house is very nicely furnished.

The beds are very comfortable.The car can be parked directly at the house and the propery is secure with a gate.The proximity to the beach 5 mins walk is great.You can`t shop in Powfoot and the hotelrestaurant was fully booked for the whole week. Allinall, we were very satisfied and enjoyed it very much.

The property was lovely.

A few minor faults though. Cobwebs on living room window at top opening, wear and tear to the living room flooring and some on walls. The bedroom was good with a comfy bed. Kitchen was well equipped. Ideal setting for us to explore the surrounding area.

Had a wonderful stay.

The cottage is clean and well maintained. The only issue for us was the master bed was a little high. I would also have liked a smaller frying pan but that is just my preference. It is situated in a lovely village. Everyone we met was friendly and chatty. The surrounding dog walks were safe and easy to access. The owner provided lots of ideas showing places of interest. We will definitely book again.

The inside of the property was very nice outside a bit tatty had trouble getting into the property could not open the key safe had to rely on a passing local to help us could not contact anybody thought we was going to have to go home the local gentleman even came back a few days later to oil it

Solway cottage is a lovely place to stay, right next to the beach was a bonus as the the dog loved going there.

Kitchen a bit small but well equipped and living area was a perfect size. The walled enclosed garden was perfect for Angus. We are going to book Solway firth next, we took a look when we were round and it’s bigger more space for Angus to play outside. Thankyou for a lovely stay.

We really enjoyed our stay there and will definitely be back. So many lovely places to visit nearby and also walks that can be done from the cottage itself. The locals are very friendly and helpful in suggesting local attractions. We spent hours on the beach walking the dog who loved it too.

Solway Cottage is a holiday gem.

It was really comfortable and the owners had thought of all the things we could need. The rooms were well presented, the kitchen well equipped and the bathroom had gone through a makeover and was beautiful. There were places to sit outside and we managed some time in the sun. It is well positioned close to the beach so was superb for our dog. The beach is spotless. The village of Powfoot is delightful and people were really friendly and would always stop for a chat. It was easy to get to other interesting places and Annan had supermarkets and local independent shops. We had one of our best holidays and will certainly want to return to this lovely cottage.

Lovely cottage in a nice, quiet location.

Solway Cottage is a credit to its owner. First impressions were great, and it continued to impress throughout our stay. Very clean and well equipped, with some lovely extra touches by the owner that were above & beyond what we expected. We've been in property management ourselves, so have high standards, and it was clear to see the owner really cares about her property and her guests. We'd have no hesitation recommending Solway Cottage to anyone.

Solway Cottage is a great base for exploring the surrounding area.

The local walks were great and the dog loved the beach too. The cottage had everything you would need but I have to say something needs done about the beds! We know you can’t please everyone but for us the Double bed Mattress was too soft so we ended up in the twin room which was slightly better. The pillows on all beds were terrible- cheap & nasty not comfortable to sleep on, giving no support at all. When leaving and stripping the beds there was blood on the mattress protector! Suggest a mirror is put on the wall opposite the gate so that drivers exiting the cottage can see if any cars are coming down the hill as it is difficult to see due to the tree blocking the view.

this is our third visit to this property, pleased t find that the uncomfortable settees have been replaced now ideal for evenings relaxing, just one bone of contention 1 of the single beds when turned back sheet it was covered in dog hairs had to take off and wash before using.

bathroom really needs upgrading. All in all another great holiday in Powfoot. We are back in May to try the owners other cottage and looking forward to trying it out. "The OAP's on tour" will be back.

Solway Cottage is situated in the pretty village of Powfoot, only a few steps away from the Solway Firth shoreline.

The cottage is the first on the left, opposite the right hand turning into Ellerslie lane, as you descend into the village. The welcome gifts were greatly appreciated and enjoyed. The settees were comfortable with plenty of cushions. The twin beds, which had been put together to create a large double bed, were very comfortable and we slept well each night despite it being the hot weather in early September. However, there were no pillow protectors and one of the mattress protectors was stained. There is plenty of kitchen equipment though I found the food storage cupboard very small. The shower was very good and has coloured lighting to enhance the experience! The back/ side door was extremely difficult to open and lock , this may need some attention. The washing machine, which we only used once, sounded as if it was a concrete mixer, the noise was dreadful, it may require a service or replacement. The bedroom curtains were not thick enough to keep out the very early morning sunshine and blackout liners could be useful and easy to install. The fridge and freezer struggled to stay cold in the recent very hot weather, a blind on the porch door may be worth considering. There is no information about recycling glass bottles and jars, we brought ours home to recycle. We were alarmed at the prospect of a £250 Good Housekeeping Bond charge given that the whole of the property needed a deep clean. We found clumps of dog hairs everywhere, including hairs in the fridge! We were aware that this is a dog friendly property when we boomed but weren’t expecting this. We did clean the property to a better standard than that which we found. The curtain tie backs were on the floor, I reinstated them to their correct position. The bin in the kitchen had no top but I found it, broken, in the under sink cupboard, this I mended and put back on the bin. The under sink cupboards are dirty and so were skirting boards. There are lots of stains and marks on walls. Maybe others would be content to put up with all of this. We won’t be booking again to stay at Solway Cottage.

Lovely, dog-friendly little cottage located within a short distance of the beach and woodland walks, which was perfect for us.

The 'welcome box' was a lovely touch and much appreciated. We brought the little lavender bags home as a reminder of a great break at Solway Cottage in Powfoot. The only negative comments (2) were that we did find the double bed a bit small and the bathroom needs a wee bit TLC to deal with the dampness. We will definitely return to Solway Cottage sometime in the future. Many thanks for advertising the dog-friendly accommodation, it was perfect!!

Comfortable clean property.

with everything you may need for your holiday.Nice welcome pack. Close to a pebbled beach which is dog friendly. Busy small village as golf course and caravan parks in powfoot. Only shop is at caravan park or 10 min drive to Annan where there are supermarkets. Restaurant (need to book in advance for food as very popular)in hotel with public bar 5 min walk ,but plenty of pubs in Annan. Good fish & chip shop in Annan.good location for visiting surrounding places. NB I did see on a listing it Said 2 bathrooms but there is only one toilet/bathroom.

Had a great week at Solway Cottage.

As others have mentioned, the bathroom does require attention though due to mould been present. Kitchen is small compared to the rest of the property but for two of us it was ideal. An unspoilt area and an ideal base for exploring or just relaxing.

This is our second year at the cottage , love the place but complained about double bed mattress last year still the same and this year, arrived Sat evening after long trip on congested motorway everyone needed a bath to find no hot water in cottage had to boil kettles for a wash only phoned Sunday but Margaret at a wedding phoned again Monday said she would sort, phone us back at 1530 engineer had been and fixed boiler got back to cottage 1900 no hot water had to boil kettles' again no bath again rang again next morning said would sort again.

arrived back at cottage 1630 engineer on site repaired again successfully this time. Bed still rubbish and uncomfortable but rest of cottage brilliant. Coming back September hope all ok this time otherwise last time here. Cottage equipped with everything you need

The cottage was well situated for lots of walks and every opportunity to exercise just a very short distance away from the beach. Friendly neighbourhood. All in all a very restful stay.

Your cottage is in a lovely village with great walks, friendly helpful locals. Solway cottage is well equipped, clean and comfortable with easily maintained floors which was great at reducing worry of paw prints. Ideally located close to places to visit. Owners obviously care about their visitors and this shows in the overall standard of the cottage and the facilities within. Thank you.

The cottage was perfect for me and my dog, with secure gates.

There were a couple of things in need of attention ( which I know the owner is on with). The cottage is a lovely place to stay & local residents are so friendly.

lovely cottage, but hot tap bathroom seized had to get hot water from kichen, CD player works when it wants, double bed mattress awful badly needs replacing very large crack in wall hallway and bad crack in joint between ceiling and wall double bedroom, garden driveway needs long term weed treatment, cottage nice and clean but settees need changing dirty looking, bathroom as wa whole needs modernising.

We are OAPs all four of us but we realy enjoyed our holiday except for above as stated. Kitchen well equipped with all you need. Will book 2 weeks next if above items are sorted out.

my wife has a bad back so would have preferred a sofa with a high back and a firmer matress on the bed.

Lovely location, friendly people in the village

We note the electric fire has been removed.

There is no tumble drier and the washing machine was PAT tested in Aug 2021 so presumably this has been so for at least 11 months. The heated towel rail is part of the central heating which rarely came on as it was warm so we struggled to dry towels. The listing needs updating. We were disappointed to find most of the kitchen items very greasy. The cleaner would not have noticed this without a careful inspection. We washed more than we used but not everything. The kitchen needs a deep clean as do all the floors. The property needs a little love putting in to it. Powfoot is a lovely place to stay with nice walks and plenty of other things to do nearby.

A lovely cosy cottage is in a very quiet village right by the beach.

It's well equipped and has a very generous rooms. The dog loved his walks along the beach and surrounding countryside as did we. We wouldn't hesitate to book again.

Where very disappointed in the cleanliness of cottage on arrival mainly living room and bathroom and kitchen ( dog hair,dust,stains,food crumbs,soap scum on shower screen ,under side of toilet seat?

) after compliant cleaner sent back armed with flowers and chocolates and full apologies which was a kind gesture but if done right first time then unnecessary . Sadly this is the second disappointment we have had with Sykes holiday cottages
