Carlisle 6.8 miles.
A Grade II listed house situated in the village of Thurstonfield near Carlisle.
Wonderfully presented with plenty of character throughout, The Hollies offers a heart-warming retreat for groups of six.
After a day of exploring, kick off walking gear and head to the lounge, boasting the original cast iron feature fireplace and exposed beams, this is a lovely spot to settle down for the evening.
Move through to the kitchen, equipped with all the essentials for a week away, whilst the dining room is perfect for hosting mealtimes with your loved ones.
On the ground floor there is a double and accompanying bathroom, ideal for those with limited mobility, whilst upstairs plays host to a double with en-suite shower room and a handy zip/link super-king-size with a extra trundle for a more flexible sleeping arrangement.
Start the morning freshening up in the bathroom before preparing a coffee and relaxing in the garden.
After an adventurous day out, be sure to unwind in the hot tub, followed by a few minutes in the sauna before settling down.
When you are ready to do some exploring, hop in the car and head into the historic city of Carlisle, where you can see many attractions home to the 15th-century Carlisle Cathedral and the historic Carlisle Castle; the outskirts of the city play host to Carlisle Racecourse and Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre, where even more fun can be had!
You are also in easy reach of the beautiful Solway Coast AONB, where the dramatic sand dunes play host to some of the most important habitats in Europe, with a number of viewpoints where oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing and knot can be spotted.
Further afield, the delights of the Lake District National Park await, including Keswick, Derwentwater and the Bowness-on-Windermere.
Plenty of adventure to be had at The Hollies.

Cottage was very nice and accommodated six adults, one child and two dogs easily.
Facilities were excellent especially the games room and the enclosed front and rear garden for the dogs. The hot tub was a bonus. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful. The village is very quiet and may not suit everyone but we enjoyed it and the locals were very friendly. I would definitely recommend this property to family and friends.

What can I say about this amazing property?
From the location to the sheer size and space everything was perfect. spotlessly clean it had everything that we needed to enjoy our stay. From the sauna, hot tub and games room to the vast expanse of the garden, you really don’t need to leave to go elsewhere. Our dogs loved the fantastic walk on the doorstep. Extremely comfortable and will definitely be back .

This is a gem of a holiday home.
Everything was absolutely perfect. I loved the bluetooth mirrors and the usb’s lamps! The hot tub and sauna was a lovely way to wind down after busy days. The games room was an added bonus, so many happy memories made with my family. Thank you!

We had a lovely 2 weeks holiday here with our 3 dogs, neighbours where great lovely people, host where lovely and the doggies loved the treats thank you, we’d definitely be back again soon, lots of beautiful English Heritage places to visit and lovely walks too, Royal Oak is a lovely local pub landlord is a top bloke too

Absolutely brilliant clean comfy and very well equipped.
The only minor detail would be to have some hooks outside for the hot tub to hang towels oh a carving knife and a wooden spoon. Apart from that amazing would definitely stay again!

The Hollies was a great find on the Sykes website.
The accommodation was spacious, clean and comfortable. The welcome pack was appreciated as was the provision of tea, coffee etc. The hot tub and sauna were great for relaxing at the end of the day. The dogs enjoyed the enclosed garden and their treats in the welcome pack. The cottage is well situated for exploring the Lake District and I have no hesitation in recommending it to others. We hope to return in the future.

Rachael and Paul were exceptional hosts — friendly, attentive, and always willing to help. From answering questions about the local area before our arrival to accommodating a mid-stay change to the bed configuration, nothing was too much trouble. The Hollies is extremely well equipped, with everything needed for comfortable self-catering. The hot tub and sauna were fantastic additions and were thoroughly enjoyed during our stay. As soon as we walked In we knew it was perfect.
The instructions for everything was simple. Hot tub was great. The sofas smelled like new. Beds comfortable. Bathrooms great. The only negative I would give is no living room door. We put the fire on to take the draught away. Can't wait to go back in summer. It was lovely watching all the birds. There's no pub or shops near but was only there 2 nights to relax.

We returned again to one of our favourite properties we have stayed at.
To have a hot tub just outside and a sauna (in a downstairs sauna room within the house is such a rare thing that has always brought us back). I’ve said it before in reviews but the property was spotless, the three large double bedrooms along with three bathrooms is such a bonus. The owners always go out of their way to make it the best stay possible, supplying tea, coffee, sugar, milk and a very generous welcome hamper with local biscuits, fudge, drinks and nibbles. Always available but never encroaching on your stay. Thank you again to Rachael & Paul, you are doing a fabulous job and we look forward to coming back soon, especially as you mentioned about a new games room being added soon with a pool table, darts and possible small gym.

What can I say the property was simply wonderful.
It was in a lovely quiet village which was easy to find and had everything to make for a perfect stay. We really enjoyed ourselves and the owners were on hand and very friendly and helpful. Hot tub was very spacious and warm, a true piece of luxury with a cover and a heater, wonderful.

The cottage was exactly how it was advertised and we had a wonderful stay.
The hot tub actually has pull down blinds on the gazebo and the kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need even all cleaning products were provided.

Yes we upgraded the pergola earlier this year so there are privacy blinds and a choice of lighting, and we have recently installed a heater to take the chill off when you get out of the hot tub. The Hollies is beautiful farmhouse accommodation perfectly renovated with all modern amenities.
It has a contemporary twist, but retains its original features and comforts. The hosts were welcoming and helpful and have provided perfect accommodation and facilities for short and longer breaks. The hosts provide so much more than just the property such as a welcome basket, dog stuff etc if they haven’t provided it you don’t really need it which is great as there are no local shops. But it’s a most gorgeous place to call home for a wonderful holiday and memories to be made !!

What a lovely weekend we've had, such a nice place.
Lots of space and very clean. It was great to have a bathroom for each couple we went with. The hot tub and sauna was a great addition! We went into Carlisle, visited the castle and the nature reserve nearby and we took a trip to gretna green. So many nice places nearby. The dogs loved it too. Glad fans were provided as it was a hot weekend so thanks for that! Only thing I would suggest for future visitors, bring bin bags as they weren't provided unless they were and we were being blind

It's in a quiet village but not too far from shops The owners Rachel and Paul were very helpful if we had any queries. And there was a very nice welcome pack not only for us but our dogs as well. Would highly recommend this house.

Fantastic cottage - fab facilities including hot tub/sauna.
The house had everything you could ask for and more. Bedrooms were well proportioned and beds were so comfortable. The bathrooms were of superior standard, the main en-suite having a walk in shower which had a touch of luxury. Enclosed garden for our doggie was a fab size so he could run about and we could enjoy the weather. Location was excellent with plenty to see and do around the local area - would definitely recommend and will be back!

We absolutely loved the Hollies- one of the best places we’ve stayed!
There were 6 of us (family) and our 2 dogs and we ALL had an amazing time! The enclosed garden at the front and the land at the back for the dogs was perfect! The rooms were huge and the beds were so comfy! We all slept great. The surroundings were beautiful and so many things to do round about with the dogs. We went to see the castle and the cathedral (dog friendly), we took the dogs to the Watchtree nature reserve and had a lovely lunch there, we had dinner at the Greyhound Inn (also dog friendly) and the food was fab! The house had everything we needed and in every room we had a fan, a hairdryer and our own towels. The showers were brilliant! The house was so spacious! There were games left for us to play & the lights had charging points for our phones. The highlight of the house was the sauna and the hot tub- what an amazing hot tub! We also had a welcome hamper left with us with treats for us and the dogs! We just absolutely had the best time and would come back in a heartbeat!!! Thank you V much for a wonderful stay!

What a fab house.
Super comfy, spacious and very clean. Beds were great too and so peaceful and set in a beautiful rural location. The owner Rachael was excellent and was very helpful and communication was first class. The house also has a great hot tub and sauna which where perfectly heated and enjoyed by all our party. This is a great find and don’t hesitate to book - you also get a lovely welcome pack on arrival too!

I have to start this review by admitting The Hollies wasn't our first choice of holiday home.
Our original was flooded and Sykes cancelled our booking in the summer. However, I feel that cancellation was very much in our favour. Having looked at alternatives with the help of Sykes, we changed upon The Hollies. What a great place. The listing really doesn't do it justice. Rachael had contacted us prior to travel and gave very precise travel instructions, which were a boon. We were also asked about one of the goodies in the welcome pack, which was VERY welcome. The hot tub and sauna were put to good use, and everything about The Hollies has been very well thought out. The owners should be proud of what they have here.

Hosts were very helpful even before arrival, sent good directions for travel and personal contact details.
Property has all the info you need, including copies of instructions for all appliances. Rachel emailed before arrival with links to supermarkets etc as Thurstonfield itself has no shops. Lovely quiet area only 15 min drive from Carlisle, but you would need a car to visit as no local bus. Home was fantastic, hot tub and sauna were easy to use and very relaxing. Comfy beds and couches, wi Fi worked well and there was a booster in bedroom. We did get phone reception in front room! Lots to do in area and a good base for travel to the lakes and Cumbria.

Great house in a great location for visiting the Lakes and coast.
We had a very comfortable stay, the house is well equipped yet keeps a cottagey feel. The hot tub is an added bonus as is the extended garden. Could not fault a thing. Friendly hosts. We felt very welcome.

What a wonderful house in a lovely quiet area.
The sauna and hot tub are a lovely added extra which we enjoyed during our stay. The beds are so comfy too. The hostess, Rachael was very quick in getting back to us and also helpful with recommendations for dog walking. I would definitely love to come back hopefully next year.

We had an absolutely wonderful week at the hollies.
The house is beautiful. Thank you so much to our host for the level of comfort and cleanliness and the little touches such as the welcome basket (including doggy treats for our pup), cot set up for our baby, stroller left for us which saved us space in the car and was ideal for ventures out. The bed in master room was unbelievably comfortable and cosy. I don’t doubt that we will return for another break in the future. My 6 year old absolutely adored the hot tub. Really nice to find somewhere so clean.
We stay in a lot of cottages and I'm often left feeling a bit disappointed with them. Yours is fabulous. Only 1 thing I would want, a bit more kitchen equipment. Limited serving bowls and no scales for baking, I usually bring my own but forgot.

Located in a peaceful village, the house itself is gorgeous and all the facilities are well maintained. The little welcome pack was such a thoughtful detail and even had treats for the dogs! I think we will be back again!

Front door was a major problem as it was an absolute nightmare to close, lovely house but a few things like this make a massive difference.

This was a return visit to The Hollies.
We were so impressed first time and the second didn’t disappoint. The location is great for Carlisle and the surrounding countryside. The hosts couldn’t be better, the three bathrooms are a luxury and for us the hot tub and sauna are such a fabulous and unique feature we made use of every day. Thank you and we will be back !

We were looking for a lovely place to stay just on the outskirts of Carlisle to visit family before Christmas. The Hollies was a perfect place to stay. Everything was catered for and it was beautifully appointed. Would totally recommend this place.

We returned yesterday from three days at The Hollies with our three children and dog!
I have to start by saying how accommodating our hosts were from the very start ! Every single thing you can imagine you might want is catered for! We had wine, biscuits, treats, dog biscuits, poo bags, fresh coffee, milk and kids sweets all waiting for us! The accommodation is stunning and little touches like light sensors on the steps at the key locks are really appreciated. The hot tub is brilliant, the cottage cosy and the bedrooms luxurious. The three Bathroom/ shower rooms make this just brilliant for larger families. We were very happy with our accommodation and it's easy out to local sites and shops. We went off for a run one morning and quiet country lanes. I am reminded they also provide a few hi vis tops in case you might be worried about traffic. Snuggling in to the lounge at the end of the day was lovely and then getting into the comfortable beds was a delight. Fluffy white towels and all the bathroom trimmings are provided. We couldn't ask for more! Thanks Paul and Rachael!

Fabulous property and location.
The sauna and hot tub really made our stay as the weather wasn’t very good most days. The beds were very comfortable and having three really well equipped bathrooms with one of them downstairs next to the sauna was very convenient.
