Description

Cattersty Cottage is a charming stone-built retreat in the friendly village of Carlin How, North Yorkshire with sweeping sea and cliff views and overlooking the picturesque Skinningrove Valley, it offers the perfect base for exploring one of the UK’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. Whether you’re planning to visit historic market towns, wander the North Yorkshire Moors, discover quaint seaside villages, or simply relax and recharge by the sea, this cottage sets the scene for an unforgettable stay.

Inside, Cattersty Cottage is designed to feel like home. There’s free, plentiful on-street parking, and from the living room and front bedroom you can enjoy views of the sea, the cliffs, and the Cleveland Way. Local shops are just a short stroll away, and Cattersty Beach—often described as one of Britain’s best secret beaches—is only a three-minute drive or a ten-minute walk down from the clifftops. Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Pheasant Fields Retail Park are both an easy eight-minute drive, and Carlin How is well connected by regular buses to Whitby, Middlesbrough, and Saltburn. The village has a well-regarded fish and chip shop, while nearby Skinningrove offers another traditional chippy and the popular café-bar KasKane in the valley.

The open-plan living and dining area is bright and welcoming, perfect for curling up with a book, planning tomorrow’s coastal walks, or enjoying slow breakfasts before heading out to explore. A smart TV, DVD player with a curated selection of films, and a vintage leather recliner make it easy to unwind. The décor blends mid-century modern and vintage pieces, including a Skovby sideboard, a flame-topped dining table, and original artwork. Superfast broadband keeps you connected, and there’s a selection of books, jigsaws, and games for relaxed evenings.

The recently modernised kitchen is bathed in afternoon sunshine and equipped with everything you need for easy meal preparation, including a dishwasher, washing machine, and air fryer. Upstairs, the front bedroom offers sea and cliff views, a double bed with a memory foam mattress, and a quirky walk-in mezzanine wardrobe. The rear bedroom is a calm, inviting space with a single bed and original built-in wardrobes. Both rooms are light and airy with high ceilings.

The luxurious bathroom has been renovated to the highest standard, featuring a large walk-in shower, a freestanding bath, and brushed copper taps—a true sanctuary for unwinding after a day of adventure. Outside, the enclosed rear yard is a sunny, private space with hot and cold running water, ideal for rinsing sandy dog paws or enjoying a quiet moment in the fresh air.

Cattersty Cottage’s location is unbeatable for discovering the region’s highlights. Whitby, with its atmospheric abbey ruins, bustling harbour, and famous fish and chips, is a short drive along the spectacular coastal road. The cottage is just 300 metres from the Cleveland Way, making it a perfect stop for walkers before the final stretch into Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Teesside and the five miles of sandy beach between Redcar and Saltburn are also close by.

Further afield, explore RSPB Saltholme Nature Reserve, world-famous for its birdlife and seals; Durham with its magnificent Norman cathedral and castle; and the historic city of York, just over an hour away. For walkers, Roseberry Topping and Captain Cook’s Monument offer some of the best routes in the North of England. History enthusiasts will love the Land of Iron Museum in Skinningrove and the Black Path, which links Middlesbrough and Redcar through the heart of industrial Teesside. Stockton-on-Tees boasts the widest High Street in the UK, scenic walks along the Tees Barrage, and the iconic Transporter Bridge. In August, Stockton hosts the Stockton International Riverside Festival, Europe’s largest free outdoor festival, and offers a vibrant music scene at the Georgian Theatre and world-class entertainment at The Globe.

Middlesbrough has undergone a cultural renaissance, with international restaurants, stylish bars, and live music venues. Art lovers can visit MIMA, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and STACK Middlesbrough—a lively hub for dining and entertainment with music most nights. Parking is easy and affordable at France Street, just a five-minute walk from the town centre and free in the evenings.

Nearby coastal gems include Guisborough, the gateway to the North York Moors and home to the 12th-century Gisborough Priory; Staithes, world-famous for its harbour and artists’ studios; Runswick Bay, named The Times “Beach of the Year 2020”; and Robin Hood’s Bay, a fossil hunter’s paradise and the finishing point of the Coast-to-Coast walk.

Whether you’re dreaming of sea air, coastal adventures, or a peaceful village escape, Cattersty Cottage is the perfect choice for your next North Yorkshire getaway. Note: Please follow us on Instagram- @CatterstyCottage

The house was lovely and clean and well stocked.

There was a welcome basket for human and dog. The beds where fresh and comfatable. The bathroom was lovely and the shower i wanted to bring home. Had the pleasure of meeting Stan when we couldn't get heating to work he came stright round. The yard could do with some attention before the summer. I could not fault the house at all. Or the cleanliness. However the area is run down and the beach is further than stated with a hard climb down or a long walk to skinningrove. The parking is not free if you drive there. If you have a disability or walking problem this is not the place for you. If you just want a base to eat and sleep and can overlook the area then this ideal for visits to nearby attractions such as Saltburn Redcar Whitby etc. If you have children with you directly accross the road is a playground. Kaskane cafe is worth a visit and food is lovely.

The cottage was very good, clean and comfortable and definitely met the details given on the web site, the welcome pack provided by the owner Stan was much appreciated.

The cottage provides a good base for visiting up and down the coast and the North Yorkshire Moors, and walking the Cleveland Way.

Had a wonderful time with my two little dogs at this cottage, it has everything you need and a lovely welcome basket upon arrival.

Communication from the owner is amazing, he tells you everything you need to know. The beach at Cattersy is amazing, the dogs loved it. I highly recommend getting a coffee from the coffee hut on the beach at the bottom of the village. I would also recommend visiting Staithes and Saltburn, both have amazing beaches and Saltburn has some lovely shops. Everywhere is dog friendly and the people are so helpful and full of information for you. I slept soundly every night as it is so peaceful, I would highly recommend and have already re booked to go back next year, I can't wait and i know the dogs can't too.
