  • "We had a fabulous week at St Mary’s cottage."

It’s in a fantastic location very close to beautiful Embleton bay. Our dog had the time of his life running along the bay, off lead, every day. Great food and drink available at the Ship Inn next door. The only thing that would have enhanced our stay was if the large tree at the bottom of the garden was cut back as it blocked out all the sunshine from late afternoon which was a shame as the garden is lovely.

  • "Clearly needs some refurbishment wallpaper hanging from the walls, very disappointed with the standard of cleanliness cobwebs and dust everywhere."

Arrived to find the log burner needed cleaning out and resetting before we had any heating. Mattresses on most of the beds clearly need replacing,This is the second time we have stayed at number 4 and is a stunning location and cottage just needs some tlc.

I am so sorry the cleaning was not up to scratch . The agency manage the cleaners .so I shall look into that with them . Did you ring them to report this when you arrived ? I had been in to renew the sofa , arm chair and curtains myself, that week but did not inspect the cleanliness closely as I was there before the cleaners came . Likewise we were still having the Indian Summer so I did not notice any chill . It is 2 years since last redecorated and is due a refresh this winter .I noted the places where the wall paper has loosened and this is on the list to be fixed , as are mattress replacements . I am sorry you had some disappointment , and your helpful feed back is being addressed . Property Owner

This is the 2nd time we have stayed here and love it because of the situation - so close to the beautiful beach.

  • "A Charming Cottage in a lovely location."

Unfortunately, we had issues with the sleeping & relaxing arrangements. The two single mattresses were too thin, dipped in the middle, so lead to sleepless nights, they need replaced. The 2 Settees were very uncomfortable, the cushions are clapped out and not sure whether the springs have gone! 4 of our family suffered from a lot of bites & we believe there from Sandflies from the Settee.!!They need fumigated. The Kitchen was well equipped, Weighing Scales & ice cube trays would be a good addition, as your not out for every meal. The Garden was very well maintained and the outside eating area is a lovely spot.

Thankyou for your helpful comments . The sofas are being replaced ,as it happens this Friday as we were aware that they were now 6 or 7 years old . The springs were ok a month ago . I can only apologise and surmise they must have had some rough use this Summer. The sand flies in August are a regular feature of beach houses and unless you change your clothes they can get brought into the house . We also get thunderflies from the surrounding fields . We will be removing the sofas this week . We were unaware that the mattresses had become uncomfy as relatively new but we shall look into that as soon as possible . Positive criticism is very helpful to us . We are glad you liked the cottage otherwise Property Owner

  • "Stayed in Low Newton many times over the years but this is the first holiday at No."

4 St. Marys and we liked it so much we booked again for two weeks next year. The cottage is well equipped with a large garden with lots of birds so bring some wild bird food if you're staying there.

I am delighted you loved our house , thank you very much for your positive feedback . Property Owner

  • "Loved the location and big enclosed garden, which we were lucky enough to sit out in most of the week."

Enjoyed our stay. Listing stated to bring own towels but they are provided which would have saved us space in the car. Also no teapot which was strange unless it has been broken? Would love to stay again but the prices for next year have risen a fair bit.

Thank you for your kind feedback . There was a teapot so I think it must have been broken . I shall replace it on Friday . Sadly our prices are higher due to several elements out of our control . The biggest is fuel which this year’s prices didn’t reflect as they were published before the energy crisis and all our other costs have jumped up too in line with inflation eg cleaning , gardening wifi and laundry . The cottage has had an upgrade too with new carpets etc and a switch of linen services to provide towels . I hope you will return one day to our beautiful spot . Property Owner

  • "Lovely location Lovely back garden Only things that caused an issue were; Bottom oven did not work which is not ideal when a family of 6 is staying Key lock in front door very difficult to open Hoover was full of dirt which suggests it’s not been emptied for a while General cleanliness of property could have been better Got flea bites from sitting on sofa Was provided some financial recompense for oven not working which was helpful."

I would stay in the property again as overall it served its purpose and the location was fantastic but the above points would benefit from being addressed

Hi So sorry the oven element decided to fail when you were there . It has been fixed . The door lock is odd as is only 2 years old . I have asked NCCC handy man go and investigate the issue . The cleaners have changed the sofa covers but found no fleas . We do not allow pets in high season so we are rather puzzled by the bites unless guests allow other people’s dogs in . I wonder if infact this may be sand flies ? We get small ones at Newton . They lurk in the grasses in the dunes and near the bird hide and may have come indoors with you ? They deliver a nasty itchy bite . Also due to harvest time there may have been Thrips about ( thunder flies ). Our cleaning team bring their own industrial style hoovers and do overlook to empty the house vacuum sometimes , thank you for the nudge which had been passed on . I am delighted you enjoyed the garden and the location . It’s a shame the weather has been so unsettled this year . Property Owner

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at No 4, a clean and comfortable and sufficiently equipped cottage to return to after a day of walking and birdwatching."

The garden is a delight for watching the sparrows, swallows and house martins. We were so pleased to see swallows nesting in the front porch, and happy to use the back door only so as not to disturb. Unfortunately, we were going to book for the same week next year, but the fee is more than double for some reason. We swiftly managed to rearrange things at home (care for elderly Mum and for grandchildren) and booked the following week at a more affordable price. It is understandable why this lovely cottage books up so quickly

  • "Location was perfect but we struggled to keep the fire going for the whole time so spent a lot of time feeling a bit chilly, warmed the place up nicely when it was going though."

The downstairs bathroom was cold in the mornings. Kitchen was functional, couldn’t find any baking trays but used a flan dish instead. Starter packs were great. The blossom was beautiful but it left a lot of bits in the house. The garden was long and very pretty with the bluebells. Parking was great and vicinity to the beach was perfect.

  • "I was a litlle concerned because I booked the cottage before reading the most recent reviews, but its clear to see the owners have address the previous guests points."

The cottage was nice and clean when we arrived, there were fresh towels and the Wifi was up and running. My husband found the fire lighters and got it going in no time. The cottage warmed up and stayed cosy the whole time we were there. This cottage is really well situated for familys visiting the beautiful beach and exploring the surrounding area. Its also great for walkers wanting to walk the costal paths. We enjoyed our stay and feel its value for money.

Thankyou for your kind feedback . Because we are right on the beach the cottage can be challenging in the winter , but its position and the large garden are a joy in yhe warmer months Property Owner

  • "Greeted with a digital display to show how much electricity we were using?"

No starter pack to light the fire, after 4 hour trip had to go to Embleton to get firelighters and wood. Stove was not cleaned out / prepared. Brought candle to offset smell from coal. Holes in coal bucket? TV too small. No oven lights. Light switches and bannister filthy and required multi surface cleaner. Windows on door filthy also cleaned. Hoover not emptied. Two half toilet rolls. Rust on fridge door. No towels. Cooker hood filthy, also no lights. No salt and pepper. Shower room was always freezing. Whole place needs a deep clean. Threadbare carpets. Overall grubby - it's ONLY saving grace is it's location, rear garden & private parking. Actually wanted to come home earlier.

  • "The cottage had the following issues; 1."

The central heating was poor. The system was powered by a dual fuel burner in the living room. The burner was dirty, filled the house with dust when cleaned out & failed to heat the house, even when burning well. The upstairs radiators never went past tepid. The fact that the downstairs was fitted with electric heaters that were locked at 10 degrees, proved that the heating system was not fit for purpose. 2. The shower room was freezing cold, as it was only fiited with an electric towel rail which never got to a point where it was hot to the touch. Also the electric shower (which did work) was not powerful enough to heat the air whilst you had a shower. So showering was an unpleasent experience. 3. The decour was tired and the bedding that was provided was only fit for summer use. Also the matresses were uncomfortable and sweaty. 4. The television was smaller than the one shown in the listing. 5. The listing claimed that the cottage had WiFi. This was untrue, there is a landline but no modem. 6. The house was not clean, certainly not to a standard you would expect having paid £1065 for the week.

We are very sorry you had some issues this week . The WIFI installation was in January , and I understand that NCCC joining instructions implied it was there already . The managmwnt team have apologised to both of us for the confusion , which seams to have occurred with the migration to Sykes paperwork in November as our web entry said no WIFI . The house is a very traditional one, with cosy but traditional decor .The solid fuel stove can be a challenge if not used before , and when it is on it is very efficient . The Management team came straight away to help I was told and brought auxiliary heating with them ., and thanks to your comments we have added clearer instructions to avoid disappointment in future. We are also sending the team in to ensure that the photography matches any changes Eg the tv , the photos were taken 2years ago . We are very sad the house did not meet your expectations , and we will work hard to correct what we can . Property Owner
