"We've been coming to Bamburgh for over 20 years, but first time we stayed in this cottage."
We usually only need 3 bedrooms but we had another relative with us this year so needed the 4 bedrooms. We found the cottage spacious, spotlessly clean, well furnished and the kitchen is well equipped. The beds are very comfy and all of us slept well. The cottage is in a great location close to the dunes and has a view of the castle from the main bedroom. Those were the good points, but sadly there were some negatives during our stay. Firstly the ensuite downstairs, as soon as we opened the door to it we were met with a quite overwhelming bad smell like musty damp which we couldn't get rid of.Then on the Wednesday the upstairs loo became completely blocked and almost overflowed. The smell from the sink plug was awful. Water from the loo seeped up into the sink as it was all obviously connected. Pretty gross! I reported it immediately and Northumberland Cottages were great and sent someone to fix it and thankfully all was resolved. The second negative was the lack of cleaning stuff in the cottage. Every cottage we have ever stayed in has had at the very least a bottle of washing up liquid and loo cleaner. But there was only a tiny tube of washing up liquid, only 3 dishwasher tablets and absolutely nothing to clean the loo with. Also only 2 loo rolls in the house that supposedly sleeps 8 people to last till we were able to buy some of our own. Not really adequate. Thirdly, the dryer function on the washer/dryer wasn't very good and the airer provided was broken and very small anyway. Not great when it rained. Lastly, the cottage boasts 2 DVD players, but neither worked properly, there were no manuals to help either, though we did manage to get a dvd to play on the playstation upstairs, but if you provide DVD players at least make sure they can be used and also provide a manual for them. Despite all that we tried to not let these things spoil our holiday. At least we were able to get out and about and the weather was fairly good in between the showers mid week. Eating out was great. The Apple Inn in Lucker, The Cottage Inn at Dunster and the fabulous Potted Lobster in Bamburgh are all a must. The surrounding countryside is stunning and I can recommend a boat trip out to the Farne Islands too. Northumberland is a wonderful place to visit. Don't think we will come back to number 30 though. The price has risen and frankly we've had better for less in other properties in the village.

"This was our third stay at this house, had a good week as always in lovely Bamburgh."
The house is clean and a good size, however we won’t stay again for two reasons. 1) the mattresses are so uncomfortable - really need an upgrade. Awful back ache as a result. 2) had a look at next summer out of interest and the price has gone up a whopping £1000 on what we paid this year. The house is in a good location and perfectly nice (bar the mattresses!) but it’s not ‘luxe’ or high end. We would not pay the new prices, there is nothing to warrant such an increase.
In 2021, Northumberland Coast and Country Cottages an independent holiday cottage company was bought by Sykes.
Over the past five years the weekly rents have hardly increased, but the cost of owning and running a holiday cottage has increased substantially.
Despite this we have invested in our cottage with a new kitchen, bathrooms, heating, and mattresses.
All our mattresses have been replaced in the last three years including a new zip-link mattress earlier this year.
Due to dynamic pricing and a wish to remain competitive, our cottage is running at a loss every week.
Earlier this year we realised that we were actually “paying guests to stay at the property”!
We have increased our pricing in line with other properties in the area.
I agree we are not luxe – more a shabby-chic beach house.
Thank you for your custom in past years.
We wish you good luck in finding a 4-bedroom, 2 bathroom well equipped beach house a 100metres from the world’s third best beach, in school holidays and cheaper.

"We were all surprised to find only 2 toilet rolls for 7 people, no cleaning products in the kitchen barely any washing up liquid, 3 pods for the dishwasher, we had a baby with us and needed to go out and buy essentials to wipe down the high chair and kitchen surfaces, washing up liquid and pods for the dishwasher, plus the toilet rolls."
My family laughed at me when I said I would take toilet rolls so I didn't take them, you should always listen to your Mother.

Armstrong Cottages! The cottage was spotless and had everything we needed for our stay. The downstairs single bed mattresses could have been more comfortable but it was manageable for the week! The location was perfect. We will definitely be coming back and highly recommend for anyone visiting Northumberland. Thank you!

"We loved the house."
Just a few things -the bed upstairs in the large room has two squeaky springs and is uncomfortable. The vacuum is very poor so very difficult to clean up after 3 kids and a dog which i would normally do daily. The dvd in the sitting room didn’t work. Shame when there are so many great dvds!!
I’m not if there is a major problem going on but the floor and stairs are very creaky.

"Beautiful property in excellent location."
..close to beach and Bamburgh.
We stayed with our daughter, son-in-law and 3 young grand daughters. The property is very well maintained and equipped. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Couldn't believe how huge the interior is ..so deceptive from the outside!
We enjoyed the secluded, well maintained garden.
Two small issues: On arrival, the vacuum cleaner wouldn't suck and stank of 'old dog'. On inspection, the filter was clogged and up obviously hadn't been cleaned out in a very long time. The foot wasn't rotating as it was jammed with debris. However, we sorted this out and it worked ok after.
The second problem we experienced was in the fact that the adjoining property is being renovated. We had a couple of days with noise...banging, drilling etc.. all day into the evening. On one day, the banging went on until, at 11.15 pm, I knocked on the door and politely asked if they could stop, as the children had been woken up with the noise. The owners were most apologetic; they were installing a new kitchen and had lost sight of the time.
However, this did not spoil our holiday...was just a bit annoying.
Overall, we've had a lovely holiday. Thankyou.

"We had a really lovely family holiday."
Quite frankly everything was fantastic. The only point we would make is to make it clearer to holidaymakers to put the bins out. They were both nearly full when we arrived as obviously the last occupants had not done this. We did put out the one bin required in our stay but the recycling ♻️ bin was completely full when we left as it had not been emptied the previous week. Overall a fantastic experience.

So comfortable and well set out.
Excellent equipment in the kitchen.
A lovely week.
There is no door for the kitchen but blankets are provided to put on the settees - which I was a great idea as we we tried barricading the dogs in the kitchen at night and it didn't work. We then put chairs on the settees - that worked!

"House freezing cold on arrival, did not get warm until the day after as storage heaters set as low as possible, not a good start to the holiday or a welcome one ,worked for 2 days then heating went off again phoned Sykes maintenance came and fetched 2 oil filled radiators one worked the other barely got warm , had to go out and buy logs not even any kindling in the house to light a fire a basket full of papers tho ,it’s a shame as the house is in a lovely part of Bamburgh and quiet apart from that we enjoyed our holiday ."

"A beauitful spacious cottage, that we very quickly felt comfortable in."
Fully equiped kitchen with every pot, pan, utensil you need. The bedrooms were comfortable and everyone reported a good nights sleep. The bathrooms are excellent. The garden was perfect for our dog, she enjoyed many a sunny day out there.
Only negative, on arrival we could not find the cottage handbook which caused some frustration because we had no idea how to open the back doors, wifi (wifi is important as there is no mobile phone reception) etc it was only by chance I found it under a bag of kindling and newspapers by the fireplace.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would have loved to book again for next year but it is already fully booked for 2025.

"Great cottage in a great location."
It was clean and well equipped and had everything we needed. We stayed here years ago and it has been updated since then with new bathrooms and kitchen. The space is great for families to share. The only issue we had was we couldn’t find a clothes horse anywhere which was a pain when doing washing and it was rainy outside. Eventually found it under one of the kids beds, but only by chance when looking for a lost teddy!
Overall a great stay and I’m sure we’ll be back.

"Very spacious property in a great location for exploring the beauty of Northumberland."
10 mins walk from Bamburgh village and of course the magnificent castle. A short walk though sand dunes onto a glorious beach. Short drive or just over half hour walk into Seahouses for supermarket etc.
Only negative with this property was the cleanliness. Surfaces were sticky and we had to wipe down on arrival, Under and at the back of beds looked like they hadn’t seen a hoover or duster for quite a while.

"Lovely location, perfect family break in a generally nice property."
The main comment is that the hot water system in the cottage needs some investment and upgrading. There is only enough hot water to run one bath, and we ended up sharing baths after the children because otherwise the water runs cold and the one electric shower isn't very strong or adequate if the cottage is full. I actually went to the leisure centre mid week and washed my hair there. Also, a toy / games chest would have been nice as well as all the DVDs.
Thank you so much for your feedback – it’s great to hear that you had a lovely family holiday. We have since upgraded the system and added a new timer along with an extra boost which is making a big difference. We hope this didn’t impact your stay too much.
