We had two nights here, the cottage is very clean and cosy. The beds are comfy and the views are spectacular, we would highly recommend shire cottage. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you.

We have just returned from Shire cottage.

The cottage is fantastic. Well equipped , warm and cosy and so peaceful. The views are absolutely stunning from the cottage , and the surrounding area. Matlock and all its shops are just a couple if miles away. Plus many local places to visit. Lovely pubs ,cafes and garden centres nearby serving delicious food. only one negative no frequent local bus service. That would have been a real bonus. We hope to return in the spring.

We had a wonderful stay at Shire Cottage - our second time.

The views out of the front windows are wonderful, especially if the weather is clear as the sunrise is wonderful. The weather was very cold when we visited, but the heating system kept it warm throughout and it was always comfortable. Thanks again.

We spent 5 nights over the festive period, and really emjoyed our time.

The cottage was clean and very cozy, and so peaceful. Had everything we needed. Plenty of leaflets for things to do in the area. Would love to go again in the summer months.

As of so many times before when we have stayed at Shire Cottage, we found everything as we expected and had a very comfortable week.

Beautiful property, really enjoyed our stay there.

The view out the front was stunning and it was a lovely place. 5 minutes commute into Matlock where there is anything you need, we visited the heights of Abraham 10-15 min trip, and crich which were both amazing places close by too. There is maybe more I could say but I don't have a single negative from our weekend there. Thank you.

Pleasant and comfortable cottage, convient for a number of places of internet.

Overall a pleasant cottage with lovely views (and a wonderful greeting from the owners' two dogs, Daisy and Panda).

However, a few improvements could be made. The shower is located in the bath which makes it awkward and potentially dangerous for elderly guests to use, particularly as there is no handle on the wall to steady oneself. While difficult to install a standalone shower, I would regard the addition of a support handle as essential for the shower to be safely used. A welcome information pack for visitors containing details of local walks, pubs, services etc, would also not go amiss. Yes, there were plenty of tourism pamphlets but many were way out of date and did not provide information about the immediate area. Magazines provided were also years out of date. A refresh of the material and an info pack would be welcome. There was a metal bench immediately outside the property but it was not conducive to sitting and enjoying a bite to eat or a bottle of wine while enjoying the lovely views. The addition of a small table and chairs would easily rectify that. Hope this is helpful. Many thanks Patricia

Only one thing I thought about later was that some information about bins and recycling would be useful.

We tended just to put it all in one or other of the 2 bins in the house which probably gave the owners extra work afterwards.

Great location, friendly dogs.

Great views and facilities good. One minor niggle, ideally they would have cotton bedding to make it more comfortable sleeping during this hot weather, but not a deal breaker.

Beautiful little cottage in picturesque area.

It was perfect for the 3 of us and had all the basics there for you. Rooms were clean, tidy with comfortable beds. We loved the area as so much to do, so we will be back to explore more and would definitely stay here again.

Had everything we needed, comfy beds and was a good base for exploring the peaks. Helpful and easily accessible host.

Very comfy cottage, with a great layout, and fast wi-fi, the view from the bedroom window is fantastic, very quiet location, and if you use the lanes to get about it is much quicker than the A roads, would like to thank the owners on their cottage.

Lovely view from the cottage, close proximity to fantastic walks and attractions, cottage very comfortable with plenty of hot water and facilities.

The cottage is on a working farm, so there are interesting things to see across the fields, and lovely, friendly, well behaved labradors if you wanted to interact. It was also very peaceful, the working farm aspects were not noisy or "in your face" at all. We had a very enjoyable holiday, thank you.

Despite being advised to call at the house for the keys, no one came to the door (it was raining hard) the key was in the door.

The owner did come over later to check all was well. It was pointed out that there were cleaning issues with the property but he didn't come in to verify. There was minimal cleaning materials provided, a broom and a brush but no dustpan or hoover to remove any debris the floors were swept before we left. The bucket for floor washing had a layer of silt in the bottom. The tumble dryer filter had not been emptied and the washing machine had black mould and debris in the door seal, cooking tin had food debris in it. Photo evidence is held.

Shire Cottage suits us perfectly.

The location is quiet and the views from the main bedroom and from the lounge are wonderful. The cottage is compact, yet has all that is needed for a very comfortable stay. We have stayed there several times and will be back in the Spring.

We loved the cottage, the location and my only regret was having to come home!

However, I am now looking to rebook as it is the perfect base for my daughter and I. Wonderful walks, beautiful scenery, fab cafes in our favourite places that we love (Matlock, Cromford, Lea, Chatsworth, Chesterfield) nearby, and a comfortable and well resourced home to relax in during the evening, and to prepare for the day in early in the morning.

This is a gem of a cottage, situated in an accessible location with a fantastic view.

It is very practical, with the most comfortable furniture and bed that we’ve found in a holiday rental. It is also a good size for 2 or 3 people, with good storage space for food etc. and clothes hanging space. The kitchen has everything needed for cooking on a short stay. It was very helpful to find both a washing machine and drier. Whilst there is no dishwasher, the sink and drainer are more than adequate. Access from the road is very easy and the space for parking is huge! I have no hesitation in highly recommending this lovely cottage.

My wife and I have been holidaying in the Matlock area for many years now and we have settled for Shire cottage as it's got everything we or you could want.

Ideally situated with lovely a view. very comfortable and relaxing cottage to stay in.

Great holiday property.

Amazing views and location and easy to find. Spent a short break here. It had everything we needed and warm and cosy on arrival. Beds comfy and plenty of seating for relaxing evenings. Despite stay during a storm loved area and property located central to areas we visited.

Lovely comfortable property in a brilliant location (fantastic views front of cottage).

Reasonably well equipped with pretty much everything you need (there are a few missing kitchen items which will have been a result of breakages over the years for example there were only three dinner knives. These should be periodically checked and replaced by the owners). That said there was nothing we missed our couldn't cope without. The floors are lino throughout (with the exception of the stairs). I know this will have been done to accommodate our four legged friends and ease cleaning but it would have been nice to have carpet , or at least some rugs, in the bedrooms. When we were there the floors were not the cleanest with quite a bit of hair on them and several of the kitchen items needed washing before use but nothing that spoilt our stay in any way. For the price I cant complain at all and I would happily stay again.

The cottage was equipped to a very high standard. Very clean and comfortable and well situated for visiting places of interest. Highly recommended.

A Nana, a daughter and grandaughter enjoyed a peaceful 3 night break.

We found the cottage warm, cosy and welcoming. We loved the tranquility of the surroundings and enjoyed Matlock, Castleton and its caves and Gullivers Kingdom. The owner/farmer was very welcoming and showed us around his farm. When we asked our 4 year old what her favourite part of the holiday was "the kittens on the farm". Followed by the piglets.

I think this was our fourth stay here and it suits us perfectly well.

It is comfortable and well-equipped. The views from the lounge and main bedroom are wonderful. Parking is just outside of the cottage, making loading and unloading as easy as it could possibly be. We shall be returning.

Very comfortable and homely and we were made to feel most welcome. Great location and easy access to any places of interest. Lots to see and do in Derbyshire! Plenty of interesting villages and small towns quite close, each with at least one pub/restaurant. Definitely recommend.

Lovely property with fantastic views and close enough to many interesting places including Chatsworth House, Bakewell and Matlock Bath as well as having fantastic walks nearby.

We also had dinner at The Gate Inn which was excellent but i recommend booking as gets very busy. All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable week.

Great setup and beautiful views, great facilities and very comfortable cottage

This was our third stay here and we are happy to use it as our 'go to' property when staying in the area.

Quiet, comfortable and with splendid views across the local countryside, it suits us perfectly.

Really lovely cottage situation in a rural area on top of a big hill with a great view overlooking the area.

Cosy, warm, homely, comfortable, got everything you need. If I could add one thing it would be a little seating area outside the front of the cottage. I think that would be really good for visitors in the summer months.

We had a lovely stay at Shire Cottage, Top Butterley Farm.

It was really easy to find. Paul gave us a lovely warm welcome and was there to support during the week as needed. The cottage is lovely- warm, comfortable and had everything we needed. The view is amazing. The location was great for walking, even straight from the door. Its close to Matlock (less than 3 miles), and great for Chatsworth (10 miles) and Bakewell (about 10 miles too) We'd recommend Riber view cafe and farm shop which is really close by. Would love to stay again.

The views were spectacular & it was in a very quiet area.

Parking right outside the property was excellent & the cottage was in easy access to lots of places of interest and some good places to eat out.

We had a fantastic holiday, place to relax, enjoy, feel comfortable and safe.

It was a perfect barn conversion property that we stayed in, the owner made us feel very welcomed on arrival and everything was of a high standard and cleanliness.

This was a delightful cottage.

Well furnished with lots of fluffy towels, stocked with soap and cleaning supplies, and everything needed for a short break. The views from the main bedroom were fabulous. I hadn't used an electric cooker before and getting it working did need the help of my teenager, (but I'm sure I could have called the owner for advice if needed). Turning out of the farm onto the road is slightly tricky (particularly for an urbanite like me) but the quiet location more than makes up for it. There's a washing machine and a tumble dryer, Wifi had great, TV even had Netflix! Great location for exploring the Peak District.

We stayed at Shire Cottage in Sept 2020.

The cottage and surrounding areas exceeded our expectations in every single way. The cottage itself is very cosy and clean. Me and my partner felt like it was a home away from home. We would not hesitate to stay here again. The views of the countryside are simply spectacular and from the attractions and local areas we were able to view (Due to covid-19 restrictions) we had a great time. Paul, Sally & their family were such lovely hosts and made us feel so welcome. All in all this holiday was such a memorable one. Not only because my partner proposed to me at the cottage but also because of the fact we found such a hidden gem of a cottage.

Would have been nice for us to have met his wife, Sally. Brilliant place to stay and it will be very high up on our list when we return next year.

The cottage was very comfortable and well-equipped; it felt cosy and welcoming.

The location is wonderful- so peaceful and a stunning view but yet not too distant from shops and places to eat. Lots of gorgeous walking territory and interesting places to visit .We can certainly recommend it !

The view is outstanding and having two toilets was a bonus but we also appreciated the very comfortable beds, settee and armchair, the plentiful supply of luxurious towels, and that there were plenty of plates, mugs and glasses in the kitchen.

My husband and I would not hesitate to stay at Shire Cottage again if we were visiting the Peak District.

A good base for exploring the Peak District and Derbyshire, with lots of great routes for walking or off road cycling trails. Pop in to Tansley Barn Garden Centre for lunch or tea & cakes. Would definatelt visit again to explore more.

The cottage was comfortable and set in a beautiful location. Outstanding views. However, the cottage was not as clean as hoped especially in light of COVID which was disappointing.

I stayed at Shire Cottage so I could be near to my mother who is recovering from a serious operation.

It's very comfortable, clean, warm and cosy with amazing views. Everything I needed was there for me. I really can't think of anything negatives to say. Thoroughly recommend.

Lots of places to see around the district. Great facilities at the cottage and owner was very helpful with orientation and dealing with an issue with a bathroom light.

Stunning location looking East across a broad expanse of beautiful green English countryside.

A good base for visiting local stately homes. The cottage equipment was good and all as expected. Bathroom was quite small and cramped. Unfortunately there was a fault on the wifi and we had no service all week, despite reporting this to Paul on the first day.

We had a wonderful time with plenty to do in the local area.

Waking up to that beautiful scenery every morning was fantastic, the air was lovely and fresh and clear, and the complete quiet was just the tonic we needed.

If anything, we thought that the upstairs bathroom was a little to small / cramped to what we are used to and we forgot to ask; admittedly; what was to put in each bin in the kitchen as there was no clear marking.

So we put general waste in one and paper/plastic etc in the other. The area where the barn is in was very nice, lovely views. Pity there was not a decent local shop in Tansley though; to get a paper. Local pubs were excellent especially the Gate Inn Based close to Matlock we found it an ideal base from which to travel to see what sights the Peak District had to offer...……….Thank you for a lovely holiday

Good area to be with lots of walks and places of interest within 15 - 45 minutes driving distance. Good places to eat in Tansley and villages nearby. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cosy cottage. We stayed in March and the cottage was warm and inviting with the central heating and the log effect electric fire just glowing.

Fantastic Location.

Near the Peak District but not in the 'tourist hotspots' so you can avoid the crowds. Some great walks from the door. Best of all the fantastic views from the cottage. Very cosy - warm, clean, well equipped, and a comfy bed.

This clean, cosy and comfortable cottage is ideally located for anyone wishing to explore the Peak District’s many attractions or simply wanting a quiet and peaceful place to relax.

The photographs and narrative description on the website accurately reflect what this cottage has to offer. There is a decent sized living room with 3 seater leather settee and drop leaf table. The kitchen is well equipped and perfectly adequate for a short stay. Yes, the bedrooms do have sloping ceilings, but only on one side of the bed. The central heating is very effective, quickly warming all of the rooms. The cottage is located at the top of a hill giving wonderful views across open countryside from both the living room and master bedroom windows. Sally and Paul, the owners, live next door and are friendly and welcoming. Plenty of good pubs and cafes nearby, within short driving distance. We had a very enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend.

Barn Cottage at Top Butterley Farm was a great place to spend a week and as a base for exploring the Peak District.

Paul and Sally were most welcoming hosts. Although a working farm, it is only 15 minutes from Matlock and the views from the cottage were fantastic.
