Extremely modern and to a high standard.

Plentiful lively towels. Negatives: blinds needed on both bathroom windows and the kitchen window as extremely dark outside and the rear light not working so we it’s a good job that we brought our own torch when letting the dog out etc. Unusual not to provide any cleaning products for the 3 loos, glass table tops. Definitely needs a coffee table and the front door area is absolutely freezing and could do with a door curtain. Used the bath bit we hadn’t read that the hot water would turn cold and then press the boost button but that doesn’t work quickly and takes away the enjoyment of a restful bath.

Really enjoyed our stay over new years eve.

I would have to be very fussy to find faults with this accommodation. 4 adults and our Labrador plenty of room. The only negative regarding our stay was that the drive leading up to the car parking area has overhanging branches from a neighbouring property that you can not avoid as they hit your car. Good location near to Buxton and Bakewell ....great area for walkers and a village pub that has a magnetic lure.

Lovely cottage and ideal for us and our little dog secure garden at back and meadows to walk him in not far from cottage, en-suite bedrooms were great and now queuing for toilet because there was 3.

The only thing we struggled with was the low sofa’s because of bad backs. It was well equipped and also had TV’s in each bedroom. The cottage was lovely and warm everywhere

We spent a very peaceful, relaxing week at Primitive Croft.

Our thanks to Tracey and her team, she is the perfect host – very helpful when you need her, but never intrusive. Primitive Croft is a modern development, but built with traditional materials and styling, it's solid and slightly quirky. It doesn't look or feel like a new-build. Our cottage was quiet and cosy, comfortably furnished and well equipped. Children will appreciate the play stations, massive television and jet bath; we appreciated the big fridge/freezer, well planned kitchen and comfy leather sofas. We also appreciated the excellent information about the cottage and the village. There is ample car parking behind the terrace. Design-wise our only real criticism would be to echo an earlier reviewer: natural flagstone flooring seems an odd choice for a modern house. It needs a Victorian housemaid with a scrubbing brush to keep it looking good. Chelmorton has no shops, but is close to Buxton which has excellent food shopping, as well as being a delightful town. The cottage is also well placed for other visits including Bakewell, Haddon Hall, the Monsal Trail and Magpie Mine. This will be our first choice next time we visit the Peak District.

This was our first stay in one of the 3 Primitive Crofts cottages after being frequent visitors to the Primitive Mews cottages.

Everything you need for a comfortable stay is provided with the welcome pack of bread, milk etc very useful (you need to bring your own butter). We were only two people and it would be a cosy fit for 4 adults but an excellent base to explore the local area. Buxton and Bakewell are lovely, we also visited Winnat's Pass and Speedwell caverns and travelled to the Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath on the cable cars. Every day was finished with a leisurely stroll up to the Church Inn for good quality food with a quiz & bingo on Monday night.

Cottage was prepared to a high standard, couldn't fault the cleanliness, everything worked properly.

The dog loved the private meadow. Chelmorton itself is very quiet with friendly locals. I thought one of the reviews on here was really harsh and didn't reflect our stay at all. We had a great time walking in the Peak District.

This was a great little cottage which we're sure would be warm and cosy in the winter.

Situated in a quant small Peak district village it is the ideal location to base yourself when wanting to visit the area from Bakewell north. If using the Spa bath though, give it a good run before getting in - it may not have been used for a while.

A Peaceful Few Days in Chelmorton, Peak District I spent four nights in Chelmorton in July 2025 and had a really lovely break.

It’s a quiet little village in the Peak District that makes a great base if you’re looking to relax, go walking, or explore some of the local sights. I stayed at Primitive Croft, a cosy holiday cottage that was comfortable, peaceful and just what I needed. The owners and the housekeeper were very friendly and helpful, which made the stay feel even more welcoming and relaxed. It’s always nice to arrive somewhere and feel genuinely looked after. The location is ideal for walkers, with plenty of footpaths and open countryside all around. It’s also close to Buxton, which is great for a day out with its gardens, cafés and historic buildings. I also visited Chatsworth House, which is always worth seeing. The house and grounds are beautiful and there’s lots to explore. The only downside was that the stay felt too short. Four nights wasn’t quite enough to do everything I wanted, but it was a perfect little escape from day-to-day life. I’d definitely recommend Chelmorton and Primitive Croft to anyone who enjoys quiet surroundings and countryside walks, especially if you’re bringing a dog. The area is very dog-friendly and there’s a real sense of calm and space. All in all, a lovely trip and somewhere I’d happily return to.

The kitchen was well equipped and it was nice to have quality crockery.

The bed was comfy with good quality linen. Use of the meadow was brilliant for my dog who enjoyed herself running free and also being secure in the back garden. Clearly the photographs were taken when the property was new and flatter to deceive. What stands out the most is the floor - it was actually filthy and nothing like the colour in the photos. My dog dripped water when she had a drink when we arrived. I mopped up with a piece of kitchen roll and the white kitchen roll ended up black. There is no mop which would have been helpful. The rooms, especially the bedrooms are small and there was far too much furniture in the bedroom with the ensuite shower room. The bathroom however was huge. It really would be better for a couple or couple with children, being 4 adults and a dog was crowded. The whole place is in need of a good clean and redecoration, the walls are marked and the skirting boards and other woodwork dirty. The artificial grass is very poor quality and in poor condition with weeds growing through and bits of what looked like mortar, all over the edges.

Excellent few days at the cottage and the village of Chelmorton.

The cottage has everything you need and is a short walk up the village street from the local pub. There are walks from the village over the local countryside, luckily we brought our bikes and rode the 9 mile cycle track along the old railway including the famous Monsal viaduct

We had a lovely stay at 2 Primitive Croft.

The house had everything we needed. Bed in back bedroom was very comfy. The meadows were perfect for our dog Bobby. The Church Inn in the village was also spot on, lovely food and friendly staff. House was very clean on arrival. Communication before and after our stay was great. We would recommend this property to anyone who wants a quiet, peaceful few days away.

The property was very small once inside.

Bathroom too big, bedrooms small. Needs redecoration and a good clean on the harder to reach areas ie high up either side of log burner. Thick dust!! Adequate for two people and dog but no more.

Lovely and warm cottage on arrival.

Welcime milk, bread and biscuits appreciated. Comfortable beds and quality linens. Big bathroom and smaller shower room. Settees comfortable, nice Denby crockery. Garden good for dogs even though our Jack Russell jumped over wall. Only small point the flagstone floor looked a bit grubby, possibly hard to clean especially if guests wear boots and shoes inside. Perhaps a central rug would look more appealing. Private meadow a huge bonus, would love to see it with wild flowers in bloom. Good contact from owner and Ellie the housekeeper. Lovely welcoming pub 10 min walk, enjoyed plentiful Sunday lunch, also called in a few times for drinks, good beer. Nice walks from door. We would definitely return to explore more of local area. Also 3 more of owners cottages up the road which we may try.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful village.

Cottage has everything you and your pooch need. The layout is very dog friendly. Our dog loved being let off the lead in the meadow. Excellent food in the local pub. Great walks direct from the door. Huge parking area at the back. The only negative (if you can call it a negative) is it is very warm and cosy. We will definitely be back.

It was a great base for exploring the surrounding area and we were spoilt for choice with great trails. Our dog also loved her stay, everywhere was dog friendly and the enclosed paddock was an added bonus.

We were very happy with the cottage when we arrived, was very warm and homely.

We’d been left a small starter hamper on arrival & some Christmas crockery. Was disappointed when I went to use the jacuzzi bath and turned on to find the bath swimming in black bits that were coming from the jets. Unfortunately this had not been cleaned for sometime. The owner did come straight to the cottage to clean the jacuzzi nozzles, but unfortunately I would not use the bath again. It did leave me wondering what the H&S schedule is for cleaning jacuzzi baths in general for holiday cottages. We liked the cottage and the local village pub, but don’t use the jacuzzi bath!!! Would be nice if Sykes actually acknowledged my correspondence as well !!!

Primitive Croft is a perfect choice for both families or friends who enjoy walking straight from the door into beautiful countryside plenty of local walks plus close to many other areas of interest.

The key thing for us was the access available to private meadows where dogs can run free. ( It's also a pleasant place to visit without dogs ). The village pub is very popular and we will definitely be returning.

Great short break in a comfortable, well-equipped property in a lovely part of the country.

Definitely on my list for a revisit in the near future.

Me and my family had a lovely time staying at the house.

It was very comfortable and clean. Had a little trouble getting the T.V’s to work as there was no signal. Also the jacuzzi part of the bath didn’t work. Apart from that was a great stay. Would definitely stay there again. Was a lovely touch giving you tea, coffee, sugar, bread, milk, biscuit and beans on arrival. This meant that you could settle in and see where the nearest shops were while having a hot drink.

We had a lovely stay and everything was as expected and in line with the description on the listing.

The cottage is well presented and has all we needed for a welcome weekend break. Visited the Church Inn and enjoyed an excellent meal on Saturday evening - when they say booking is recommended this is sound advice it was very popular. Given the opportunity we would chose any of these cottages again.

The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. The paddock walk was really good our springer loved jumping in and out of the grass

Pub in village is lovely and welcoming. Food very good and well worth a visit. Nice little welcome pack on arrival from owners was very nice and welcome with small essentials of milk, bread etc. Will recommend to friends and family and will definitely look to stay there again.

Lovely area with pretty views, great location for walks & towns nearby, lots of off road parking.

Very comfortable, lots of sitting space, perfect for 4 people for a long weekend. Bedrooms were a bit small but still ideal & comfy & fabulous with 2 en-suites AND a downstairs toilet!!! Could have done with a bit of painting here & there but the cottage was very clean which is the most important thing.

Lovely cottages, beautifully and thoughtfully maintained.

Very very comfortable, both double bedrooms have a quality en-suite. Warm, clean, had all amenities needed. Lovely private paddock to walk the dogs (it states walled paddock but my pup did escape - if your dog is a flight risk like mine best not to them let off lead in there). I genuinely could live in this cottage. They are new builds but manage to maintain the charm of Peak District housing. Only downside is walls are quite thin so if you have a noisy neighbour..

This cottage is in a super location with lots of great walks on your doorstep.

The pub at the top of the road is also very inviting. The cottage it’s self is well equipped, warm and comfortable. Messaging from the owner Tracey and housekeeper Ellie was excellent. I Wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Lovely cottage in a quiet village.

Ideal for exploring the area. Well equipped with everything you need. We found it extremely warm and couldn’t reset the thermostat (may have just been us). I think you could have it set a little cooler as there is also the fire available. Nice small enclosed back garden and I used the paddock over the road to walk my dog which was ideal.

Lovely cosy very clean cottage.

New build so well insulated and underfloor heating on ground floor (also great for drying wet boots) along with log burner (which we didn't use as so warm in house). Comfy beds, electric showers (so unlimited hot water) and spa bath (which we didn't use). New bathrooms and kitchen. Parking outside and round back. Good walks directly from door (and Lathkill Dale which is very pretty was 10mins drive away). Good location - 15 mins drive to Buxton/Eyam/Bakewell. Only a few minor niggles - no light above sink so hard to wash up in the dark. Built in fridge/freezer isn't attached to cupboard door so you need to open 2 doors every time you open fridge/freezer. Only 4 of all crockery and no dish washer so you need to wash up often (sometimes between courses). Can't put your legs under dining table properly due to its design. Some reviews have complained about lack of TV signal. We didn't have any problems. We also took our firestick so watched netflix etc through that Overall a great stay and we'd go back

Provided everything we needed with the additional bonus of a good local pub selling excellent food. The cottage was very well located in the lovely countryside for great walks.

A truly lovely cottage and ideally situated to explore the surrounding area.

Lots of places to go to within a 15-20 minute drive. To say it was cosy was an understatement, we had to turn the heaters off upstairs and open windows. We had all that we needed and the welcome food pack was appreciated. It’s true that the tv signal was intermittent, we got a signal on the Sunday, a relief to my son and his partner so they could watch Dr. Who but nothing thereafter. It actually seemed a waste to have 3 tv’s available. We did manage to log into our Netflix account through the PS3, to watch a film in the evening, so maybe that’s a consideration for future guests. The thing all four of us agreed on was the feature bath, a bit of a waste really. Not enough hot water to enjoy a good soak, even with pressing the ‘boost’ button to heat more water. We all ended up using the shower in the other bathroom. The off road parking was ample and good to have. We met the owner as we were leaving and she was really friendly. Definitely would stay again, my son’s partner said they could happily live there!

Lovely everything you need and somuch more

Have stayed at this property twice, and both times it was clean, comfortable and reasonably quite for a mid terrace.

The location is very convenient for Buxton, and shopping and fuel are both just a short drive. There is a nice pub in the village walking distance which I can recommend.

2 Primitive Croft was faultless.

Everything was as expected from the website photos, the place was very clean, beds very comfortable and an ideal location for many of the Peak District attractions and walks. The village pub well worth a visit and the available meadow for our Westie dog to chase around securely was really beneficial early evenings. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone who appreciates quality and cleanliness. Property Manager Tracey's communication and service was spot on! Henryk.

Lovely cozy cottage in a pretty village close to Buxton.

Lots of great walks near by and the owner gave us access to their field the village to walk out dog. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend a stay here

We had an issue with neighbours who damaged our car.

Neither the owners or sykes showed any real concern or made any effort to address the matter.

Quality of fittings poor - cupboards etc.

Small rooms, space not utilized. Jacoozi bath not appropriate for this type of cottage.

Great stay in a fantastic location between Buxton and Bakewell with all basic needs met.

The cottage was in great condition with only minor issues to be seen (eg some water damage from a leaky chimney in one bedroom). Will definitely be trying to stay here again!

Great place.

The preparation was great, leaving the lights and heating on and having milk and bread etc available was Made us feel very welcome. We felt very Covid safe too. Just a couple of things: there was a couple of sweets under the bed from a previous guest, the bbq had used coals still in (we brought our own bbq to use so there wasn’t a problem) and there was a was food stuck in the grove by the door on the oven. We really enjoyed our stay and will recommend it to friends and if we get chance to come back we will. Thanks for a great break

This cottage is exactly what we wanted.

Area, walks, proximity to the local pub, serving excellent food. The owners of the cottage,go out of their way to provide the best experience. Lots of information. Immediate response when we needed help with the TV. A paddock to walk our dog off the lead. Bread, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, beans, biscuits, all provided. All the lights on for our arrival, cottage beautifully warm, kettle boiled ready. What more can we say, fabulous.

Unfortunately this is the first cottage that we have stayed in that failed to meet our expectations, the cottage was so warm and no instruction how to adjust the thermostat, we spent most of the week with the windows open, not great for the environment.

Our sheets were not clean, had hairs in the bed that were not ours. No cleaning products so unable to clean the kitchen after cooking. Wheelie bin was full on arrival so had to squeeze our rubbish in and no recycling facilities. Dyson was full when we went to use it. The listing said Games Room, 1 board game and a PS2 does not constitute a games room. Toilet in back bedroom was not attached to the wall securely and the jacuzzi bath did not work which was very disappointing.

Although the cottage was great we were disappointed that the website did not mention that wi-fi and mobile signals in the area were poor.

The lack of mobile signal didn't bother us too much but may have been a concern if we needed to be in contact with family on a regular basis. The wi-fi was unavailable at the cottage for the duration of our stay (which appears to be a regular problem looking at other reviews) which meant our daughter could not do the college work she intended to do.

The cottagescwas spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable and attention to detail throughout the house was excellent.

We picked a really wet week but the walking was still good.

Chemorton is a good place to make as a base, a lovely village with a great pub; the food was home made and delicious and Justin was a good host. 2 Primitive Croft was very comfortable and relatively new. Ground floor was based on open plan living and boasted a huge TV with a good selection of DVDs and the log burner came in very handy for drying walking boots. A drying area for wet clothes would have been good but we managed without it. Two double bedrooms each came with en-suite facilities and the bedding was good quality even though the bed was a little to firm for me I am sure that it would be okay for most people. The only item I was disappointed with was the astroturf in the rear garden; but I suppose it's maintenance free for the owners. Our first time in the Peak District and it won't be our last, would recommend Chelmorton and the Primitive Croft cottage.

We, all four of us plus the dog, had a very good couple of days in the cottage.

I cannot find any fault with it. It was clean, comfortable and a welcoming pack of biscuits, bread and milk was a ver.y nice touch. All in all I would very much like to stay there again

Great location easy access everywhere and cottage was very clean and cosy.

Comfortable beds, good quality TVs in all rooms, wifi that actually works, modern interior, decent showers, good location, plenty of off street private parking at the rear of the property, welcome pack and easy key collection.

The host Tracey, also rang in advance of our stay to advise of facilities and key collection. Room heating and lighting was on ready for our arrival. Everything was spot on, it is a pity that some other hosts cannot manage to get some of these basics right. The hot water timer had been switched off on the controller in the main bedroom so there wasn't any hot water on arrival but this was easily resolved by using 'boost' function on controller and the timer switched back on. If I had to be really picky the toilet cistern in the main bedroom was a little wobbly but this really was very minor and hardly worth mentioning. It is a lovely place to stay with everything we needed and we would like to stay again in the future.

The jacuzzi bath is a nice feature but totally impractical.

To fill the bath to be able to use the jets means the hot water has run out and basically the bath becomes tepid - so not a good experience! The kitchen would benefit from a sieve and some smaller tumblers for juice, spirits etc and possibly some egg cups. Although the welcome pack was appreciated we noted that both the milk and bread had a sell by date of the day we arrived!

It was a beautiful, homely property in a lovely location, the paddock was an added bonus for walking our dog.

Tracey was very informative and although we had no need to, we wouldn't have hesitated to get in touch with her for any problems. We will definitely return and have already recommended to my parents!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a lovely cosy cottage which was so near to many attractions and perfect walking opportunities.

The cottage was very dog friendly and the 3 acre meadow was wonderful to walk our dog around. We hope to return next year as the area exceeded all expectations.

There is too much advertising by email from you, almost from day one of booking this holiday not to my liking constant pestering.

We had a great time the cottage that we rented was superb and had everything needed for a short break.

There were no towels when we arrived but a quick call to Tracey resolved that with towels delivered about 15 minutes later. The access to the meadow for these cottages was brilliant too as this gave us the opportunity to let the dog off the lead for early morning and late evening walks as she had an aversion to going to toilet on the artificial grass! The village was great too the pub especially the food there was really good value and there was a good selection of beer.

We had a wonderful stay in Primitive Croft.

The welcome pack on arrival was a nice touch and lots of information about the local area was really helpful. The cottage was very clean and décor was lovely. The location was perfect for exploring the beautiful countryside and surrounding areas. Local pub just a short walk away, great food and friendly locals. We will definitely return one day and would highly recommend staying here.

I was disappointed with the cottage.

There was no starter pack for the kitchen or the log burner. Two of the toilets were not fixed properly and consequently rocked and banged the wall as you got off them. The cottage did not seem finished to a good standard.

Just what I needed, The cottage was beautiful, really clean, loved the Easter egg!

Great cottage in lovely village.

Lovely well equipped cottage.

Owners had thoughtfully supplied welcome pack, containing coffee, tea, milk etc. Would not hesitate to stay there again. However there are just a few observations I would like to make: Insufficient hot water available to take a decent bath Downstairs room not warm enough without having the log burner on. One night I resorted to using the quilt from upstairs. We did have snow during our stay at New Year. Insufficient supply of soft pillows

Comfortable sofas & beds, quality bedding. Friendly village & local pub food good, highly recommended.

We had a lovely time beds could of been a bit better felt they were a bit worn and the furniture could of done with footstools as they were quite low and it was hard to get comfortable on them, Every thing else was very nice.

The pub 5 min walk up the road (the church inn) is a very welcoming establishment,the food is excellent massive portions, a great place to finish an evening dogs very welcome which is also an added bonus. We will definitely return,hopefully for longer next time & will also highly recommended the property.
