What guests are saying
I booked this place as a retreat away from inner city London life and it certainly provided that.
It’s more remote than I originally realised (not the owners’ fault) with some hair-raising one-track, steep lanes, but it’s manageable. Once you get there, you get to enjoy all the benefits of being so far away from civilisation: no road noise, no… anything really. Just birds tweeting and cows mowing (seriously). I did get a strange moped noise one early evening - do people use them to herd sheep or something? - but it was more baffling than annoying. The outdoor terrace thing is one of the best parts of the property. Just sitting there in the quiet and watching the grazing animals is *chef’s kiss*. I don’t know who lives in the main house (you’re kind of in someone’s garden) but I didn’t see or hear anyone, so they must be used to being very respectful of their guests’ space. I was nervous about some of the things mentioned by other reviewers, like hot water running out or low storage. I’m pleased so say I had no such issue on either front. I had a hot shower each day with no sign of it running out (this was in summer, mind), and had electricity available at all times. The bathroom itself is great too. There are 5 or 6 wall hooks for clothes, yes, but there is also a big shelf unit in the bathroom with some baskets for your things. It felt like having my own walk-in closet. Nowhere to hang anything, but if you're here for a walking holiday or just to relax, you’re probably not going to need perfectly crease-free clothes. The description takes a little poetic licence with the ‘dining table’, which is a little fold-out against a wall, but surely you can’t be expecting to host elegant dinner parties if you’re booking a little place like this. Also I struggled to find many walks directly from the place, although supposedly there are loads. Best to drive to a nearby town and go from there. Nearby Ashover is lovely. The upstairs bedroom really is like a little nest. I felt so cozy and loved looking out over the view in the morning. Yes, you have to literally crawl into bed, but again you know what you’re getting if you book this place. Note for the owners: as others have mentioned, please put a lamp up there, even just a little LED one or something. There are plug sockets (which I only saw on my last day), so I’m not sure why there isn’t one. If you’re a guest, I’d recommend bringing one if you’re driving. I happened to have a little rechargeable nightlight so brought that. Overall, though, I enjoyed my stay.
Exactly as we expected.
Very warm welcome from the host. Lovely people and lovely place. Will be looking to book again next year. Thank you.
We have stayed at cockoo nest twice now and we love it.
Beautiful location and nice and quiet. Also plenty of pubs and places to eat around.
