Shires Rest

We had a lovely stay at Shires Rest.

It was very comfortable, clean and in an excellent location for exploring the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, as well as the surrounding towns and villages. The owners were extremely accommodating and helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The only downside for us was the lack of a secure space for our dog to exercise. An enclosed area connected to the cottage would be a great addition, allowing guests to leave the door open while knowing their dog was safe. Overall, a very comfortable and enjoyable stay, and we would definitely recommend the cottage.

Beautiful cottage, perfect location for walking in the peaks, I did Dovedale stepping stones, Thors Cave and Luds Church, all a short drive away.

Home from home feeling. My dog settled perfectly. Very friendly and welcoming owners. Very clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend and will be back next year.

This property might be dog friendly but as soon as as you are through the door you must have them on a leash.

Because immediately outside the front door your on the main access road for all vehicles to the farm there is the extremely busy traffic at the top of the drive. No pavements so nothing within a 20 minute walking distance or you/dog would be having an accident with the cars that race up and down the road so you have that fear every time you have to try and walk your dog who are in a routine for their toilet needs. We even asked if there was anywhere safe to walk our dog and the field that had the cows was available over a huge gate and so muddy that my husband nearly fell in the deep wet mud. Very misleading about dog friendly. We even left before lunch the day before because we were stressing about the problems getting our dog walked instead of using the car. We try and use the information for the cottages re our dog and this is definitely the worst one. Lovely and clean and one dishwasher tab! The noise from the road during the day when cars are speeding and into the evening is non stop. No welcome pack of information and we had to hunt round to find details about the boiler/dishwasher which was needing rinse aid and salt that we obviously didn’t expect to bring so lots of hand washing of pots with only one dishwasher tab as I have never only had One left before. This property just makes us now decide not to chance any other “dog friendly” cottages and stick to our regular one in two dales that is perfect for dog friendly breaks and we’ve never had to leave early.

Clean, comfortable and generous in size, feels like home from home. Exploring a working dairy farm was a bonus. Simply excellent.

Nice, well situated cottage for lovely walks in the area( especially Youlgreave ). Clean and comfortable and incredibly good value for money. Recommend going to the Biggin Hall Hotel for a meal, slightly pricey but well worth it. Only negative was the sheep in the field opposite, quite noisy in the early morning( I know, I'm staying on a farm! ).

Well kitted out kitchen, comfy bed and living area. Very helpful owners. Situated for easy access to Buxton and Ashbourne with a walking trail close bye. Highly recommended.

I was somewhat optimisic to book a stay in Derbyshire back in October.

hoping for good weather so I could do some walking in the area. However, the weather was was not what I was hoping for, but I was not let down by anything else. The location is perfect if you like putting on your hiking boots and setting off into the countryside. There are numerous attractions in the area and even if walking is not your thing, it is still a perfect base for travelling further afield. My friends had questioned why I would want to stay on a noisey, smelly dairy farm when other options were available. The farm is neither smelly, nor the cattle noisey. Nosey they may be as they are quite inquisitive, but they added to the character of the stay, and did not detract in any way. Shire's Rest is a wonderful cottage, indeed it was very similar to the one I lived in in North Yorkshie a few years ago. Everything you needed for the stay was there. It may have been freezing outside, but it was as warm as toast inside. The bed was unbelieveably comfortable and even if the weather had been better it would still have been a challenge to find the enthusiasum to get out of it in the morning. The owners and their family were very friendly and approachable, and all this contributed to a wonderful holiday location. I will be returning, but I'll be having a check on the weather prior to booking next time around.

Really lovely place to stay.

Clean and very cosy. Ideal place if you're looking to explore the peaks. Only down side was that there wasn't really anywhere for me to let the dogs out for the toilet. They did make do with a small bit of grass but would've been nice to have somewhere proper for them to go. Would highly recommend though.

Cottage was approximately 20 minutes from other villages.

.pub which was advertised as 5 minutes away was closed which i feel should have been updated on advertised. Very thin winding country roads to properly.. some only fitting one car down. Cottage was clean enough and as you can expect very quite. Road noise was very minimal and not an issue. Great temperature on shower however pressure was not good. Bed is a very small double which made sleeping quite cozy. Overall it was a satisfying stay especially having a piano.. my partner has found a new hobby.

Lovely accommodation in a fabulous location for visiting the area.

Highly recommend. Everything you need for a lovely weekend and close to lots of walking trails and lovely villages and towns. Note it is on a working farm and near a main road but that didn’t bother us at all but noise and smell may not be everyone’s choice. Sue was lovely and helped us with a problem with the radiators really quickly. My only comment would be to upgrade the towels as bath towel very small and looked a bit tired out and well used - may be my personal preference- but apart from that no issues at all. Thanks

Every comfort provided. We took our dog along and she loved the freedom she had. Not restricted in anyway. Her first meeting of cows up close. Sue who owned the property was very welcoming. We will definitely be staying there again.

A lovely cottage.

Very well equipped and clean. The interior is cosy and the bed nice and comfy. It’s on a working farm, we had our dog and although had to make sure he was on his lead. This caused no issues for us. This added to the holiday as we could hear the cows. The owners live on site and were very nice. I couldn’t fault anything. The property is very near the high peak way - a two minute drive- and well positioned for lots of attractions. Would highly recommend

We found the cottage very comfortable, clean and homely.

The location was great for many hikes and close enough to other villages. The closest pub only 2 minutes drive is the jug and glass which served lovely home cooked meals. Unfortunately Carriages which is metres away is closed temporarily. Hartington village is a 5 minute drive with a great cafe and pub and lovely walks from the village.

A lovely little cottage.

Our only criticism is the steps from shower perhaps a 'grab handle ' on the wall leading down would be of assistance for more mature guests. Th entranceway to the drive is a challenge for larger vehicles requiring a little shunting to and fro to gain access. The supplied equipment is excellent thank you .

I felt very comfortable during my stay.

The cottage felt like home and the bed provided an exceptional nights rest. This cottage will be at the top of my list for future visits to the Derbyshire!

Comfortable and cosy cottage.

I was swayed by the piano when I was choosing somewhere to stay, first time I've packed piano music for a few days away. I enjoyed being greeted by the cows poking their heads over the shed door when I parked up! There is plenty to do in the local area, and didn't have to travel far to visit lots of places.

Shires Rest was the perfect country retreat, it was spotlessly clean and had everything you could wish for provided, even more if you count the piano.

It was perfectly situated for us to visit all the pretty little villages in the area and also the majority of walking trails.

Wonderful weekend break, Shire's rest was well equipped, comfortable, relaxing and convenient for all the places we wanted to visit: Bakewell, Eyam, Stanton moor and local antiquities.

There was everything you required in the kitchen. Reclining sofa was wonderful and one is now on my list of wants lol. The piano in the lounge was very novel, I played a tune but the notes werent in the right place

Really enjoyed cooking Christmas dinner in the kitchen. It was a difficult entry to the cottage, but there’s nothing you can do about that as you couldn’t do anything about the weather.

It was very clean and well equipped. The owner introduced herself when we arrived and said if we needed anything, she was there to help. We didn’t need anything as everything was perfect. We enjoyed our stay there and will definitely be booking again.

Shires Rest is a superb cottage.

Hidden away in the lovely Derbyshire Dales. A stone`s throw away from the High Peaks Trail.(I wish I had taken my mountain-bike!) Traffic noise is not too obtrusive, especially if you close the bedroom window at night. A well equipped cottage with all the comforts of home. Harley, our Collie loved it too! With easy access to Buxton, Bakewell, Hartingdon and Matlock. It is situated on a busy road without footpaths, and is on a working farm, so if you don`t like farm smells and cows, it`s not for you! Less than 5 minutes drive from a FREE car park at Friden on the High Peaks Trail, a short distance from DSF, (The Derbyshire Silica Fire brick company). With a fantastic history of it on the wall in brick relief, beside the trail. We were introduced to Sue, who helps run the farm and owns the cottage. She came to see us personally after we had settled in. A lovely woman. We had a superb two weeks stay and The Carriages restaurant, just up the road, serves excellent food and real ales, at a vey reasonable price and our Harley is allowed in the restaurant, but not in the carriage, you`ll see when you get there. A well stocked local garage is just up the road too if you need to buy provisions but don`t want to go to town or supermarkets. It would be the icing on the cake if there were footpaths on the busy roads, but beggars can`t be choosers, so that`s just a small niggle. We loved the place, and would thoroughly recommend it. Thank you Sue. Hopefully see you next year, all being well.

5 stars for the cleanliness, comfort,. We where lucky to get a good week with the weather enjoyed the dovedale walk especially.enjoyed every day we will be returning next year.

Have recommended to a friend who is staying in December. Lovely area, plenty to do. Shame we can only have one dog, otherwise this would be our go to place

First off the entrance off the road can only be done from one direction.

The shower is not very accessable to elderly people . The stench from the cow shed was over bearing at times.the shed is only 30 ft from the door to the let.as for the description of amenaties for the let by sykes games and dvds which was listed were not there , also it could have made the difference to our stay which rained every day .unhappy about the details arriving not before 5pm and leaving 9am .we came home on the wednesday.lwill not be booking from sykes again due to the por description of the property

Found this cottage extremely comfortable and clean and tidy.

Loved having the piano e en though i can't play much. Enjoyed getting up close to the cows. Catered for all our holiday needs.

Great base for exploring the surrounding countryside and well placed for visiting the villages, towns and attractions of the Peak District.

The cottage itself has everything you need for a comfortable, relaxing stay including a piano! The owner checked in on the first evening to make sure everything was satisfactory, which it was. If I'm visiting that area again, I would happily return to Shires Rest.

The perfect location for us, near to all the high peak trails which we like to hike on, the cottage itself was clean comfortable and had all the facilities we needed, it's central location for Bakewell, Ashbourne and Cardington Water, enabled us to have some good days out with our dog.

This was the first time I went away for a peaceful few days in the country in my own and Shires Rest was the perfect place.

A lovely, comfortable cottage with character. All the appliances I needed and easy to use. So many beautiful places to visit nearby, from off the beaten track quiet, beautiful walks to busier places of interest like the Heights of Abraham. I am definitely going back and fully recommend.

The place was spacious and had everything we needed.

However nowhere to store our bikes despite it being less than 300m to the high peak trail.

The property itself was very clean and well equipped, with everything you would need from a holiday rental.

For me however, the bed was very hard indeed as was the sofa in the living room. Also the shower, which worked perfectly was probably the smallest I have ever encountered, being six foot 3 and 20 stone it was indeed a tight squeeze, but for normal sized people I'm sure it's fine. Just be aware that this property is on a working cattle farm, and there was early morning mooing and a strong cow aroma. The front door leads directly into the kitchen, it rained for a large period we were there and we had a dog, so a big mat would have been useful to wipe our feet on. There was a small mat but we had to put towels down for our big dog to stand on while we dried him. But all in all we had a very pleasant stay and would recommend it.

Cosy, comfortable accommodation in an ideal location for walking or cycling and easy driving distance to Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock etc.

Excellently base if touring the peaks, near Buxton, Matlock and Bakewell.

We visited Wirksworth and did the circular walk, well worth a go if you enjoy walking also we did a couple of walks directly from the cottage, which was clean, well equipped and cosy, would definitely stay again.

The cottage was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed to make our stay a comfortable one.

The settee was ok but not the most comfortable. It is located on a dairy farm - so lots of country smells and animal noises. If this bothers you, this is not the place for you. There is some road noise but this is really only at peak times. There is a good pub/ restaurant just a few minutes walk away, but there is no footpath so care is needed walking along the roadway. It is about 5 minutes walk to Friden carpark on the High Peak Trail. This was brilliant for walking the dog. Lots of good walks locally. The cottage was excellent value for money and I would t hesitate to visit again.

Lovely cosy cottage, in a great setting on a working farm, easily accessible for all the places we wanted to visit.

All the facilities you would need are there in the kitchen, although we ate out every day, only having breakfast in the cottage. When we returned back, it was nice to sit on the bench outside and read, soaking up the sunshine but the bench could have been more comfortable so used the sofa cushions for comfort. We didn’t find the road noise distracting (and I’m a light sleeper). The heating was very efficient which we used in the evenings as it became chilly, being October. We ate a few times in Carriages which is about a 2 minutes drive and had no complaints with the food or service. We definitely recommend. This is a very nice cottage for 2 and doesn’t feel at all cramped.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shires Rest.

This was booked with the help of your excellent staff as we arrived at our intended Sykes accommodation "Pail End" at the check in time only to be greeted by the owner to advise us that there was no hot water and problem couldn't be fixed til Friday (therefore unavailable thru out our four day stay).On contracting your very helpful staff alternative accommodation was offered and in under 2 hours we were met by the owner at the alternative property.

Close to numerous beautiful villages and towns, with access to walking and cycling trails.

Fabulous countryside whatever the weather there's still plenty to do. A good O S Landranger map is a must to navigate the many small lanes and byroads around the area.

we had a very nice stay in this charming cottage which was well equipped very comfortable and well placed for us re visiting the Peak District the weather was perfect which made for some stunning photo's.

Despite the covid rules for the cottage it was spotlessly clean and had all we needed. Sue the owner was very nice and very helpful and we loved Boris the dog! Although on a busy main road we were not disturbed by the traffic which was mainly first thing in the morning and evening rush hours as it is anywhere. we would stay here again if we are intending to be in the area in the future and enjoyed the meals we had at the local pubs!

Shires Rest had everything you could want in a cottage, very well equiped.

We felt really relaxed right from the first day. Having the Pennine Bridleway a short walk through the farmyard and across the field, was ideal for early morning and evening dog walk. If you enjoy walking, the cottage is ideally placed, with so many routes to choose from, either from the cottage or a very short car ride to their start point. I'm sure we will be back to do some more walks, and wouldn't hestitate to book Shires Rest again.

The time to check- in was far too late at 5 p.

m. and check out was far too early at 9 a.m. The settee was uncomfortable. Radiators on landing and bathroom didn't work. No telephone signal.

Everything you needed was available in the cottage and a great pub/restaurant within walking distance.

There is easy safe access to the high Peak trail and Tissington trail from cottage which was an added bonus, as we want especially to ride our bikes on the trails.

A comfortable, well equipped cottage on a working farm - just across from one of the large cowsheds and a field of friendly calves.

We loved it, but obviously if you are not used to farmyard smells and noises, keep the windows on that side shut! It was in a perfect location for walking and for visiting places such as Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock, etc. The nearby Carriages Bar and Restaurant is good but choose your time carefully as you have to walk along a fairly busy road with no verges. No problem if you avoid the early evening rush. A thoroughly enjoyable week in the Peaks.

Very clean, comfortable, warm, spacious and well supplied cottage.

High peak and Tissington trails both within a mile which gave us easy walking options despite the weather storm Dennis gave us. Pub- restaurant just over the road (dog friendly in bar) and farm shop 5 minutes walk meant we didn’t need to use the car at all during our 4 night stay. We will happily return and explore the area more.

The host was helpful and was kind enough to show us how the farm worked. The farmer Tom is a talented artist who was kind enough to invite us into his home to admire his work.

The cottage is very clean,comfortable and well equipped-perfect to return to after a day exploring the beautiful Peak District.

It is in a very good location for visiting the many attractions of the area.Sue,the owner is very friendly and helpful. The only slight downside is the closeness of the road which was quite noisy at times, But on the other hand,having the road close was an advantage as it made it easy to get to places in any direction. All in all we had an enjoyable holiday at Shire’s Rest.

The family were helpful when we needed a vet for our dog and recommended a helpful vetinary practice in Bakewell.

Our dog was soon well again.

Superb “Carriages Inn” a short walk away serving superb food. Everywhere dog friendly. Cottage is close to many lovely walks. Our Westie loved every minute and so did we! A great Easter break. Have used Sykes before and never disappointed.

Just come back from a really good 3 night break at Shire's Rest.

Cottage is cosy, comfortable and well equipped. Public house is a 5 minute walk up the road which serves good food and is dog friendly. Cottage is well located for access to all parts of the Peak District. Only a 5 minute walk to the High Peak Trail and not too far from the Tissington Trail.

It was situated close to the high peak trail for daily dog walks, was warm and provided a cosy vase for exploring the peak district

Cottage was very cosy and Warm, our weather was glorious for February.

Family on farm very friendly. Just one little thing about the cottage, there is no towel rail in bathroom, so nowhere to put your towels after your shower, we found a clothes horse in cupboard. But would definitely return to this cottage. Area beautiful
