Description
Homely cottage situated on a working farm in Withypool, Somerset with stunning views of the village and surrounding moorland.
On entering the property, guests will find a very comfortable king-size bed and a stylish bathroom.
The lounge/diner has two sofas which enable the guests to unwind in front of the TV following a busy day.
There's also a set of French doors which open up to the garden and beautiful views of the local area.
Outside of the property there’s plenty for guests to enjoy, with a barbecue along with seating area, so why not top off summer evenings surrounded by green and pleasant land with a burger or two along with your favourite drink.
The enclosed garden has plenty of space for your dog to explore as well.
This traditional farmstead has fishing rights on the River Barle, and is home to a small herd of Pedigree Dexter Cattle.
Exmoor is a dark sky capital, so on a clear night the stars are amazing.
For outings further afield why not try the market town of Dulverton (10 miles), the medieval town of Dunster with it's castle (16 miles), Porlock and Porlock weir, where Exmoor meets the sea (13 miles), or Woolacombe for it's magnificent beach (30 miles).

Remote, peaceful location for a relaxing break in Exmoor.
Spacious, dog friendly accommodation with secure outdoor garden. Generous welcome pack provided. Car required to get to Withypool as a long walk for many. Great cafe and pub in village. Lovely riverside walk to Tarr steps. Up to date tourist information would be helpful.
Idyllic location, away from all roads but within an easy riverside walk to the village of Withypool, which has an excellent pub, shop and tearoom.
The farm was perfect for walking the dogs and getting onto the moor. Everything had been thought about at the property and Bev and Geoff were on hand if needed.
Lovely peaceful position right on Exmoor Fantastic views all around Great cafe in Withypool, lovely homemade cakes and scones
From the first meeting our host on arrival to leaving we could not asked for more.
A very generous welcome hamper we found in the fridge. From bread and butter to a bottle of wine not to mention eggs and milk. I had a problem with the TV, my problem not the TV, but when I asked for help it was no bother our host was only to happy to help. We hope to revisit very soon.
Lovely, comfy cottage with everything you need, in a stunning location.
If peace & tranquillity is what you need, this is the place!Only one small issue: the listing states that the cottage is 1 mile from pub, shop etc. That may well be as the crow flies!!The tracks & moor roads are not suitable for wheelchair users & maybe this should be made clearer.
Foxtail Cottage in one of the best holiday cottages we have stayed in.
It was comfortable and had everything we needed. Bev and Geoff were good hosts and we appreciated the milk, bread and butter, biscuits and wine which awaited us on arrival. The farm is quite isolated but that makes it very peaceful and relaxing. The views are wonderful. Highly recommended if you need a quite break. Barbara and Steve
Foxtail Cottage was perfect with wonderful hosts.
The cottage has the most wonderful walking in every direction. Lovely view from the sitting room and garden. The facilities are all great and as detailed. It has a very efficient heating system that made it cosy at all times.
2nd visit to Foxlair, and it won't be my last.
A warm welcome from the hosts who are always friendly and helpful and never intrusive. Stunning views of the local countryside from the cottage. Accommodation is comfortable, the cottage is warm and the kitchen well equipped. It is so lovely not to have to get into a car to walk the dog. You just walk up the lane and there are fields and moorland spread out in front of you. Local shop (which is easily walkable) offers a good range.
The most useful comment I can make is that I booked to go again, before I had even finished this stay.
Very comfortable and warm cottage. Kitchen has everything that you might need. Very quiet location. Bev and Geoff are great hosts; keen to make sure that you are comfortable but not intrusive in any way. If you like walking you probably won't need to move the car at all whilst you are there; many great walks, including to the pub/tea room and village shop.
Superb
Despite the weather (we seemed to pick the rainiest week of the year), we enjoyed our stay at the cottage.
Very roomy yet still cosy. Nice views and a lawned garden area was very handy.
This cosy comfortable cottage is beautifully situated for peace and tranquility and lovely walks.
There are great views from the cottage of the surrounding area. The owners are on site and are very welcoming and very helpful without being intrusive in any way. We had a lovely stay and their welcome treats were very much appreciated. Would definitely stay again.
We have stayed twice previously and it was lovely to be back.
A very relaxed place to stay, friendly owners and great for the dog. The property is nicely central for all the best places to visit, and the great walks in Exmoor.
The cottage was delightful and perfect for us and our 2 dogs.
We loved the peace and quiet and the walk along the river into Withypool too. Very thoughtful touches from the owners on arrival - milk, butter, bread, biscuits, eggs, tea, coffee, sugar and a bottle of wine! Would definitely recommend and re book for us too.
A lovely warm welcome to a wonderful cottage!
Everything has been thought of, from the lovely gifts awaiting us, the comfy bed, the drying room, and plenty of space to explore! An absolute gem far from the madding crowd. Alpaca neighbours and a lovely garden....the dogs enjoyed their holiday just as much as we did! Would definately recommend: absolutely wonderful!
Foxlair is a fabulous comfortable cottage set in an idealic place with lovely Exmoor views.
The owners were so friendly and helpful. Nice garden for our dog to play in and plenty of walks from outside our door. Parking directly outside is a plus. Definitely recommend.
The booking was easy, it was a lovely holiday let Bev & Geff were very welcoming and such a sweet little spanial puppy, Everything was thought of and the fresh eggs, bread, biscuits etc was a lovely touch especially the wine x i could not believe how clean it was being on a farm and with having dogs staying and how luxurious the bathroom and kitchen was.
also having two entrance into the garden was a big plus as was wet when i stayed so meant i could clean dogs off in outhouse before allowing them in the house. the garden was big enough for my two labs to run around in and very secure, and to top it off the alpacas as your neighbours and the views where breathtaking even on the wet miserable days and too see the ponies roaming around was lovely. i have told all my friends/ family and will definitely book it again in a heartbeat its my new go to holiday / distress plaice for me. hope to see you soon x
What a wonderful property set in stunning surroundings.
If you want somewhere off the beaten track this is the place for you. On arrival we had a welcome pack of wine milk butter bread and biscuits which was very welcome also the property was warm and cosy The walks straight out the front door are really good if you have a dog. The shop in the village has nearly everything you need but if you need a supermarket you will need to travel a bit so plan your shopping The property is well equipped with everything you need Would recommend this cottage to anyone
Warm, comfortable well equipped cottage with everything I could want.
A lovely friendly welcome by owners which makes such a difference on first arrival. I would certainly book this cottage again.
We had a lovely time at foxlair cottage the place was beautiful it had everything you could think of inside the cottage and the view is amazing we loved everything about it will definitely think about going back and we will definitely recommend it to family and friends
A great stay!
Sorry fo the delay in repling; my computer was being serviced. See you again sometime! Best wshes Dr. Ian Maun
The only recommendation I would make is a clear sign at the entrance.
It was three quarters of an hour from arriving at Withypool to finding Foxlair
The best we have ever stayed at.
It took a little while to get used to the cooker. I don't use a microwave. Spent most of my time looking at the surrounding countryside. The bird life is fascinating ,just wish I had taken my binoculars. There was plenty of room and a very comfortable bed. I made use of the facilities, washing machine once . The freezer was a blessing, most places only have an icebox. A lovely holiday had by both us, shall definitely come back.
An enjoyable stay pity that weather wasn’t up to much but that can’t be controlled.
We have been to the west country many times but its the first time in Exmoor. Loved the location peace and tranquillity. Will definitely like to come again. Nice to see the new born calf, sorry to hear you lost one on the day we left.. Lyn kept eyeing up Bev's craft studio as she is also a crafter. Buster didn’t really need walking as he had so much exercise chasing the rabbits which by Friday he had given up on.. Many thanks.
It was excellent definitely will be going there again great hosts lovely couple nothing was to much trouble
We had a lovely time at foxlair, it's a lovely cosy cottage.
Everything you need is there, the only thing I would point out is there is no Icebox in the fridge, apart from that brilliant.Would definitely stay again.
Some people, urban dwellers perhaps, might find the approach to the cottage a trifle daunting.
The better part of a mile of narrow single track winding and rising and falling across a barren, uninhabited moor. In failing light and rain one tends to keep a lookout for the Baskerville hound ! The cottage itself, a beautifully converted farm building was nigh on perfect and the owners were unobtrusively welcoming. If you seek solitude, silence and scenery this is for you.
lovey little property.
had everything we needed and more.
Lovely cottage.
Very comfortable and clean with everything you could need. Owners were lovely and helpful. Garden was great even for my greyhounds. Very enjoyable break.
Perfect cottage in gorgeous surroundings with all amenities including a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.
The garden was perfect for our 2 Springer Spaniels and fully enclosed. Withypool itself is a lovely little village with a dog friendly and gorgeous pub and tearoom. Be aware though that there is no phone signal and very limited wifi but is perfect for a total break from reality.
Lovely cottage with everything you need from fresh bedding a welcome gift of wine ,milk ,bread and butter .
There is a good range of cooking equipment. Amazing views and walks and very secure garden for dogs and lots of wildlife to see. The hosts were very friendly and made are stay very welcome.
This was a really lovely cottage perfect for exploring North Somerset and north Devon.
It had everything we needed to make our stay a great one. The enclosed garden area for our dog was an added bonus for us and our pet. Would definitely recommend.
Fabulous cottage and hosts.
Lovely to arrive to homemade bread and essentials (inc. a bottle of wine) Stunning location, remote, quiet and surrounded by moorland. Its over 20 years since we last stayed at this farm and its still as beautiful as ever!
We had a lovely stay.
Cottage was cosy and spacious. Stunning views and our dogs loved the garden and such bonus that it was enclosed. On arrival we had all the basics such as milk, bread, butter, tea, coffee, biscuits & a lovely bottle of wine.
We had previously enjoyed a stay on this site in Creenaghs Cottage and decided to book the Fox Lair.
Both the lettings had been significantly upgraded since our last visit. Indeed, the Fox Lair was one of the best holiday lettings we had ever rented. We would wholeheartedly recommend this property to anyone who was looking for a peaceful stay. Indeed, the break was made even more enjoyable by Geof and Bev, our two hosts, who were helpful and supportive.
Extremely comfortable and roomy cottage in a beautiful setting.
Very welcoming and friendly hosts. Excellent base for visiting both coast and country and enjoying the peace and beauty of the countryside.
The photos of the lounge do not do justice to the property as it has been refurbished.
A stunning location with peace and quiet top of the agenda, all you can hear is birdsong and manic sheep, with Babs joining in with the occasional bark! Alpacas in the field next to the garden. The friendly welcome from Geoff & Bev was lovely. As an aside the Withypool shop is well stocked and you can pre order
Absolutely amazing the cottage was first class, with a lovely breakfast pack supplied, the location was so relaxing and peaceful, on the Moor, loads of narrow roads that at times a bit hair-raising, Nothing bad to say at all
Lovely setting all on its own in a quiet peaceful valley, a mile off the local road.
The only noise I could hear was the birds. Very friendly obliging hosts who helped me out when I accidentally flattened the battery on my truck. . It was a last minute booking and was all I could find, but turned out to be just what I was looking for. Would certainly go back
Lovely cottage, great views, fantastic owners.
Great holiday property if you are looking for something quiet and away from any towns.
The property is very spacious clean and has everything yiu could want views are amazing and rabbits frequented the garden. The pub was not walking distance unless you are used to long hikes or it is dry enough to go across a few fields. The owners were friendly and around as their house is just across the driveway. Only thing I would be aware of is that the roads are very thin and windy so not for drivers who may be wary on country roads so trips out a little daunting. Glad I had taken the 4 x 4 as with my small car would have struggled . On the whole though a fantastic stay and the owners had left us prosecco eggs bread butter and some biscuits which was great
Off the beaten track, need to be a good walker and vehicle driver.
Views fabulous
One of the reasons we booked the cottage was because of the numerous animals on the farm and the short walk to the pub?
We only saw 3 Alpacas during our stay and the walk to the pub seemed to be non existant. We couldn't find any path and if we had I'm sure it would have been much more than 6 minutes walk, as stated in the description. Whilst the cottage itself was comfortable and had everything we needed, it did need cleaning. Particularly between the kitchen unit and the fridge and behind the bath. The mirrors were all smeared, I had to clean them to be able to see properly. Beware of the decking outside the patio door, it's very slippery when wet. All that said, it was a beautiful location and the village was lovely and had some beautiful walks. The locals were very welcoming and helpful. The owners of the cottage had been very thoughtful and left us a bottle of wine, fresh bread, milk and biscuits. Excellent clothes washing facilities and thankyou for the added touch of a hair dryer. I would suggest some leaflets at Foxlair, suggesting places to visit as there is no Internet connection for online searching. There are some books in the cottage with historical information on Withypool. The local post office is very helpful with tourist information. We would definately come again as its an ideal location for visiting Lynmouth, Dunster and Porlock and we enjoyed our fury friends in the garden along with the beautiful scenery. Thankyou Jo
We were dissapointed that the two bedroom windows looked out into a sort of 'lean to' small utility area, which wasn't very nice.
We also found that two frying pans were dirty and a saucepan had to be washed before we were able to use it, this would be down to the previous occupants of the cottage. While generally the cottage was clean and very tidy, the skirting boards needed a good clean and when we arrived there were cobwebs in the bedroom and the bathroom, the window frame in the living room area also needed a good clean. If I was paying the greatly inflated prices for next years holiday breaks I would certainly expect a higher level of cleanliness for my money!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay .
Beautiful location and comfortable and well equipped. Thank you for the trouble you took to find us somewhere for a few days. Wished we could have had longer. Anne Scott.
Quiet excellent location for walkers
We enjoyed the week very much.
The cottage was spacious, very comfortable, well equipped and off the beaten track a peach for wildlife lovers like ourselves. We had several foxes, rabbits, little owls and many more interesting fauna visit the garden during the week. Ben and Geoff were super hosts. Withypool 2 miles away was an attractive old village of only approx 250 inhabitants but still supported a cafe, shop, and a pub which served very good evening meals. Would we return? MOST DEFINITEL
Geoff and Bev really good hosts, with the freshly home baked bread a winner.
Really nice place to have a quiet week away. Ideal for walkers with walks on the doorstep. A well enclosed garden just the job for Marley (our dog). A well stocked shop in the village and a friendly cafe across the road from there. The Royal oak pub offers a wide range of food with a friendly welcome
Had a friendly welcome when we arrived from the owners.
Had everything in the cottage you need plus little extras. Very quiet cosy cottage.Would recommend this cottage to any one who loves the countryside and lovely views. Sat nav takes you to wrong farm so ask at the pub. Its only about mile out of village. If you like watching the stars this is the place to be.Its not to far to bigger towns,so once again would recommend to any one,
Great cottage for walkers, everything here that we needed.
The setting is lovely with walks from the door.
What a delightful area, the cottage has all you would need and the owners were more than helpful.
A lovely holiday.
The peace and quiet at this holiday was second to none and the hosts Bev & Geoff were extremely welcoming, we even had home made goodies left for our stay.
All in all a very welcoming break from the busy routine of working, scenery is great and we were lucky with the weather.
A lovely homely comfortable cottage, in a most picturesque part of the world!
really enjoyed our short break. The fully enclosed garden was a great bonus for our dogs, as that is our main priority! Hope to return sometime, Lorraine Finch.
