A charming cottage with many delightful touches in a quiet rural situation with an outlook over open grass fields grazed by sheep (not forgetting the odd Curlew !), yet only a couple of miles from Barnard Castle. Although the cottage is attached to the main house, it has a private west facing patio which gets the sun for a large part of the day. The owners have obviously put considerable thought into ensuring that the cottage is well set up with everything that one could possibly want. There was a welcome pack on arrival which was also much appreciated. An excellent base from which to explore the surrounding are. My wife and I had an idyllic week there and we would heartily recommend it.

BARNARD CASTLE

Staindrop 6 miles; Richmond 13 miles; Darlington 16 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep of this lovely market town, with woodland walks and cycle routes and the Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.
