We wanted for nothing. Scones and cakes also were provided which were delicious. Especially liked the map on the wall that enabled us to plan cracking walks which were contained in the superb files provided by Tom and Liz.

  • "Property clean and generally convenient."

Lounge and bedrooms comfortable. Bathroom and downstairs toilet small but well equipped. My wife is disabled with nurses back, but could manage one return trip per day up the stairs, which worked well - she found the turn at the top of the stairs difficult for her due to only one handrail (standard arrangement). I found no problem.

  • "Very well equipped and charming cottage with excellent hospitality provided by the owners."

Lovely small, sheltered garden to the rear, a real sun trap. Guest information on things to see and do in the area was superb, which even included distances and travelling times from the cottage. Only negative was that we found the double bed a little on the firm side, but we find this with most cottages we stay at (so may be it is us!). Drive up to the cottage is along a narrow lane and track, but is not busy and we didn't meet anything during our week's stay there. All in all one of the best holiday cottages that we have ever stayed at.

Tom and Liz are excellent hosts, warm, friendly, caring, and supportive. The cottage is extremely comfortable and very well equipped. It is the best we've stayed in with Sykes. The location is fabulous with wonderful views. Beautifully peaceful and restful it forms a great hub for walks and visits in the area and the nearby village of Silsden covers most needs. The cottage contains a lot of material on places of interest and a folder of excellent walks. We especially enjoyed visits to Saltaire and Haworth, to see the Bröntes parsonage museum. The ride on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway was wonderful and Bolton Abbey and walks excellent. The highlight of the walks was Ingleton Waterfalls which although a bit of a drive it was spectacular. An absolutely fantastic holiday!

You feel you're in the middle of nowhere, but in reality you're a stones throw away from the town of Silsden, so you get the best of both worlds. You can just enjoy the local walks from the cottage, or use it as a base for the many nearby attractions. If you love wildlife then there's much aplenty. We thoroughly recommend Kestrel Cottage and plan to come again!

  • "Kestrel Cottage is a really cosy and warm away from it all retreat."

The weather was horrendous when we went but you wouldn’t have really known that from inside. The cottage is well equipped but we think would have benefitted from a proper arm chair in the living room as there were three of us and we struggled a little to get comfy for the evening. The dogs loved the space to run around outside chasing a ball and the rear enclosed garden was perfect for letting them out in the evening. Our bed was a little firm for us but that’s always personal taste, but we were always warm enough. It is a rural escape and because of that we did encounter a few problems with the WiFi, phone signal and tv reception but as I said the weather was awful so may have contributed to that. All in all though we had a lovely peaceful stay and the board games provided were really useful. The owners are really nice and did check in on us from time to time and as other people have said the scones, butter and jam are a really thoughtful touch.

As I had to attend a course in a nearby village, Tom(owner) was more than willing to let us arrive an hour early so that I could leave most of my luggage and get the feel of the cottage, before rushing off for 2days. There was milk, tea, coffee and cakes waiting for us and unlike many other self-catering properties all the basics were in place. No need to buy toilet rolls, tissues, soap or cleaning items. Clean and comfortable and beautifully warm. All we needed was there, and the wall map of places to visit and folder of corresponding information, was inspired. Information on how to find the property, including a small local map, meant we already knew that there were supermarkets etc near by so food shopping could be done on arrival. The garden was very safe for our dog. We have already passed on the details to several friends as we thought it was great value for money, a real ‘home from home’. Many thanks,Tom and Liz.

About the location

SILSDEN

Bolton Abbey 8.5 miles; Ilkley 8.5 miles; Skipton 9 miles.

The pretty town of Silsden, set on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, commands sweeping views of the River Aire and its valley, and has a thriving community with local amenities. Although Silsden was originally an agricultural town, the construction of the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal meant that it later became an important centre for the mill industry, however the local economy is now largely supported by tourism, and it has become a perfect place to stay and explore the local area. Down the Aire Valley lies historic Skipton, known as “The Gateway to the Dales”, a quaint market town boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. In 2008, the Academy of Urbanism voted the high street as the best shopping spot in Britain. In the next valley lies Addingham, a thriving, small community with several good pubs serving fine ale and excellent food, a scattering of small shops and a delightful golf course surrounded by breathtaking countryside. Nearby Bolton Abbey is one of the region's most scenic areas and the walk along the river to the Strid is a must. The Victorian Spa town of Ilkley is also worth a visit, with its wide streets, world-famous Box Tree Restaurant and Bettys Tea Rooms, while Ilkley Moor is the subject of Yorkshire's unofficial anthem “On Ilkla Moor Baht at”. With steam railways offering regular excursions through stunning scenery, canal day trips, castles and pretty market towns all available nearby, Silsden is a wonderful base for touring the Bronte Country and North and West Yorkshire.
