Description

Cartmel Cottage is charming, stone-built, end-terrace cottage, just off the main square in the historic Wensleydale town of Middleham, 2.5 miles from Leyburn. Dating from circa 1850, the cottage features an open plan living area with exposed ceiling beams, a wood-burning stove, a modern, well-equipped kitchen and an open staircase leading to the two bedrooms. Outside, there is a small front garden (adjacent to road) with a seating area, from which guests can watch racehorses trot past each day from the nearby stables.

The amenities of Middleham are close-at-hand, including excellent traditional pubs and local eateries. Known as “the Windsor of the North”, Middleham is nestled between the rivers Ure and Cover. Its Georgian and Victorian building are dominated by a 12th century castle, which was owned by the “Kingmaker” Earl of Warwick during the Wars of the Roses. In 1471 it became the principal northern residence of England's last Plantagenet king, Richard III, following his marriage to Warwick’s youngest daughter, Anne Neville. Wonderful walking can be enjoyed from the doorstep, and market towns such as Richmond, Leyburn, Masham, famous for the Theakston's and Black Sheep breweries, and Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese, are within easy reach.

Please note that Middleham is a working rural town with farm traffic and horses on the roads from early in the morning, Middleham is also a tourist destination so there can be expected tourist traffic in high seasons.

Really enjoyed our stay here, and some great discoveries in the village itself.

The only improvement I would suggest is to incorporate a smart TV, and perhaps some thicker/ light excluding curtains for the bedrooms

Lovely cottage in a lovely rural village.

Location is great and it was lovely to see racehorses parade past us every day. Bedrooms and bathroom were comfortable. The kitchen is a bit cramped so no comfortable kitchen table to sit around and the seats in the living room were not comfortable but other than that certainly a good place to spend a week

Cartmel cottage was exactly as described, charming and well positioned for visiting surrounding areas, we enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
