  • "Superb property in a lovely location but a couple of caveats - 1."

storage - providing a half-sized cupboard for food and a tiny fridge for up to 4 people is not enough. 2. The ramp to the front door is extremely slippery when wet, even wearing walking boots etc the feet slipped. More worrying was my wife's walking stick and feet slipped numerous times nearly causing a fall! The cottage was very comfy and warm, and we did initially say we would want to return but due to the above we probably will not which is a shame.

The cottage was bigger on the inside than we imagined from the photos. It was beautifully clean and tidy and had all the amenities we needed. The location was a perfect central location and even though on a working farm was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed it so much we have booked again for next year.

Ideal for exploring the North Yorkshire moors, York and other major towns and even the coast at Whitby was only just over an hour away.

Such a comfortable, well-equipped, immaculately clean cottage with many thoughtful touches. And we enjoyed watching the wildlife on the grassed area outside the living room window, including a frequently returning pheasant, and a hare. Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe is set in beautiful countryside, with interesting places to visit in the immediate and wider area, with some good cafes for a coffee and cake treat. Thank you, James. I am sure we shall be back again.

  • "Lovely cottage that suited the 3 of us perfectly."

Having the detailed inventory beforehand was excellent (as we have been caught out on previous holidays in not having something that we expected would be in a property). The cottage has everything you need provided (including tin foil, cling film, food bags, cooking oil, tea, coffee and many more to mention). Family were so lovely and getting a tour to see the animals at feeding time in the morning was loved by my 6 year old. The fresh farm eggs that are available are excellent and we loved them - thanks Joe. We had a great week with you - thank you.

A really lovely holiday home, very clean and comfortable which had all the necessary aquipment to make a short break a pleasurable experience. Situated within the grounds of a working farm there was the additional pleasure to see a herd of alpacas and some horses, too. We liked visiting the market towns of Thirsk and Ripon, the latter with its magnificent cathedral, as well as seeing the White Horse and the now open to the public site of the Thornborough Henges. Altogether a very enjoyable short holiday.

It was so clean and comfortable and welcoming. A great place to come home to after a busy day exploring what Yorkshire has to offer. Really can’t rate the cottage highly enough. We both can’t wait to return. We had such a lovely break away. The cottage is so well equipped and in a great location. Being just a few minutes by car away from Thirsk and the train station you can’t ask for much more. Thank you.

Such a comfortable, immaculately clean and very well equipped cottage, with many thoughtful touches, giving a most relaxing holiday. Set in beautiful surroundings, with lots to see and do in the area. For two out of the three times we have been there, our three grandsons (13, 11 and 6) and their parents have also been staying at the same time at The Little Byre cottage, and the boys loved the opportunity offered to interact with the animals - including the alpacas, pygmy goats with their new-born kids, the hens (whose new-laid eggs can be purchased), Jim the ram who loves being patted and fussed over, and not forgetting the legendary Bella (the dog), who trots round each day keeping her eye on what is happening. Cannot wait for our next stay. Thank you so very much, Ed and your family.

  • "Calf House is a superb cottage."

It was easy to find and very peacefully situated. The neighbouring cottages and laundry facility all added a welcome farm friendly atmosphere whilst ensuring complete privacy for each cottage. The inside of the cottage was warm and cosy and cheerful and appointed and cleaned to the highest standard. We wanted for nothing. And there is so much to do in this area without necessarily going further afield to the Dales or across to the Coast. We had taken our bikes and James and his father Ed were very helpful and friendly recommending a circular cycle ride from the cottage, through the nearby village of Thirlby. We also cycled the trails from the Visitor Centre at the top of Sutton Bank. The Visitor Centre alone is well worth a visit along with the wonderful views from that stretch of the Cleveland Way, looking right across the Plane of York, to the Fells of the Dales. And there is a also a stunning but steep walk down to the tranquil and peaceful Lake Gormire, only accessible by foot. We bought superb provisions at the butchers, bakery and greengrocers shops around Thirsk market place, and because it was Monday we were able to buy fresh fish in the market, which was probably the best fish we have ever had. It had been freshly smoked that morning. All of this we were able to cook and enjoy back at the cottage after our adventures each day. We also enjoyed feeding the chickens on the farm every day, and looking at the other animals. Children would enjoy this location.

It was great being on a working farm and the eggs and sausages were delicious. The staff were courteous and helpful. Our main criticism would be that the shower didn't work very well, so we had a lot of baths that week and the beds were very hard, which is OK if you like a hard bed, but everyone in our family found them very uncomfortable. There are lots of interesting places to visit. We had a great time exploring North Yorkshire. Would I recommend this accommodation? On balance- yes.
