East Wing - Castle Fraser

What a beautiful castle, very quiet and peaceful , lot's of place's to visit, loved seeing the little bunnies running around, apartment very clean and comfy,staff very happy and helpful, the pillows were absolutely amazing.

We found East Wing - Castle Fraser to be comfortable and well-provisioned.

The welcome basket was generous and welcome after a long drive. The double bed was comfortable. Unfortunately there was no dressing table (only a chest of drawers with a mirror on top) and it was not particularly close to plug sockets which made drying my hair difficult. From a peak into the twin room, which we didn't use, one of the beds was positioned in front of the built in wardrobe. The only issue that we had was that we had planned a relaxing Sunday brunch which we could not have because of the MacMudder family event that took place that day. We were totally unaware of this and notification would have been appreciated. There were families streaming by the accommodation on both sides - to the event in an adjacent grassed area and to the toilets in the courtyard - there is a very squeaky door and noisy hand dryer there which was also rather irritating when using the kitchen whilst the castle was open. We were very glad that we had toured the castle on the Saturday and were going out that day. The car park and overflow car park were full to capacity to give an idea of the volume of people attending throughout the morning until we went out. We had no issues on other days and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

This is a gem of a property.

Castle Fraser is stunning as is it's location. Staff were brilliant, very helpful and gave us fantastic recommendations of where to walk and visit throughout our stay. We really appreciated the attention to detail at the property, from the welcome basket to cleaning products and those little touches that made it extra special. We would love to return at some point.

We enjoyed our 7 night stay at Castle Fraser immensely.

It was comfortable and quite delightful to be fully immersed in “castle life”. The staff at the gift shop (John), the docents who conducted tours and the lovely and talented team in the Tea Room were all generous with their time and knowledge. The food (sandwiches, soups and pastries) were top notch and better than many restaurants we have frequented in our travels. Staff provided great suggestions for local venues and travels. The pricing for the apt was competitive and a good value. The amenities provided were locally sourced and quite nice. We would stay here again and highly recommend the accommodations.

Thank you. One small suggestion - perhaps you need a small drainer by the sink. We were always worried that those nice plates would crash to the floor after we had washed them!

Our New Year stay will be remembered for years.

Not just because the East Wing apartment was very cosy and comfortable and had everything we needed, but also because we stepped into Narnia ! The estate became a winter wonderland overnight.We were well warned of the snowy conditions and came with supplies.We did not leave the estate for two days but our walks were spectacular in the snow.We did finish the entire welcome basket but I think we needed to keep our strength up.Many thanks to the NTS staff who got us safely on our way.We will be back in the summer.

We stayed in the east wing in 2024 and loved it so much, we booked for 2025.

We loved it so much, we’ve now booked for 2026. Beautiful location in a great area with loads to do. Tonnes of history, walks and outdoor activities. Aberdeen less than 40 minutes away and the cairngorms about half an hour. The apartment itself is beautifully equipped and the staff welcoming. The only suggestions I could make for improvement is to have a bit more shower pressure and a more consistent internet connection.

A lovely apartment in a wonderful and fascinating venue.

The National Trust for Scotland staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgable- we visited the castle twice during our week staying there. The apartment was very well set out and equipped and the welcome tray was the best we have ever come across! Loved being part of the castle and being able to park right outside the front door made it easy to load and unload. Lots to explore there but the whole area is full of interesting places! We thoroughly enjoyed our week there!

Excellent holiday in the castle.

Everything we needed and the NTS staff were friendly, knowledgeable and there if we had needed them, but respected our privacy. We would love to return in the future.

Great place, lovely grounds, location ideal for visiting many other gardens and castles.

Only downside is that the bedrooms are very bright, with badly fitting shutters and inadequate blinds. This meant in summer, it was difficult to get to sleep and we woken early (4am) by the light. Really needs blackout curtains.

This was the second time I stayed at the East Wing with my family.

We love it there and highly recommend it if you're looking to stay in this area. The setting is wonderful; I love the view over the big field from the upstairs window as well as the views of the beautiful castle from the grounds. It's spacious for us all and very nicely furnished with comfortable beds. It's also very well-equipped and comes with a generous basket of goodies including some delicious Castle Fraser honey. We took advantage of the lovely weather and were able to eat al fresco a few times. I'm sure we'll be back again!

Everything was provided and everything was high quality. Also a generous basket of provisions provided. We loved every minute of our stay

Absolutely Fabulous place.

Really well equipped kitchen and very comfy beds. Beautiful surroundings and so quiet with no neighbours! Going for a walk in the evenings was wonderful and we saw lots of wildlife we don't see in Sussex. We would return without hesitation and were very sad when it was time to leave.

Our second stay in less than a year and it was just as good as before - brilliant accommodation, lovely setting and helpful National Trust staff.

We had a wonderful week in the East Wing of Castle Fraser.

Everything matched the description and was stylish but modern at the same time. The welcome pack was very generous. And the weather played along too. Overall a great combination of Sykes and National Trust for Scotland standards. Only the blackout in the bedrooms could be a little better to block out the early sun.

Really comfortable and well equipped with everything of a high standard. Absolutely fantastic to live “in your own castle” and have access to the grounds. Amazing views in the area, loads for a family to do. Couldn’t recommend more highly. Very likely to book again.

This was a lovely, well-maintained property and not only was its location, within a castle, very unique and interesting, but it also made a good base for exploring the rest of the local area.

You have the freedom of the estate for walks and leisure.

Castle Fraser and the surrounding grounds are a lovely setting for a great holiday and all National Trust staff there were very helpful and friendly. Looking forward to coming back in the near future!

Fabulous location - step outside and you feel it's your castle.

Walk in the grounds, or just gaze at the turrets. Spacious inside. Well equipped kitchen. Kitchen & sitting room could do with more light; bedroom level is lovely. Comfy, spacious double bed. Quiet - except the dawn chorus! Five minutes to Kemnay for provisions.

Castle Fraser is not only a beautiful set of buildings, grounds and gardens - it is also full of the history and stories of an incredible family.

The NTS team are so friendly and enthusiastic that the collectibles, furniture and family history jump off the page and you can feel like you are right in the midst of the old days.

All we could have asked for is a little more hot water to fill the « royal » bath.

The quietness and the beauty of the estate will remain in our best travel memories!

Amazing place to stay, we felt like the lord and lady!

There was a lovely welcome basket and the accommodation had everything that we needed. Lovely walks around the grounds and further afield on the two marked trails. The guides on the tour of the castle were knowledgeable and helpful. Loads of places to visit around the area and luckily we were blessed with great weather. We have now returned home and are recharging our batteries after such a busy holiday.Highly recommended.

We really enjoyed our stay - the only downside was not being able to access the walled garden out of hours.

Overall a clean and well presented apartment in an interesting castle with a beautiful garden and extensive grounds.

A few things that could be improved are: replace or resurface the bath, have a bin in the bathroom, and provide bin bags that fit the kitchen waste bin.

The property was perfect for our needs.

Its in the East wing of the Castle and there is plenty of room for four persons. The kitchen is well equipped and again roomy. The living room/ diner is comfortable and I would think on colder weeks would be very cosy. The beds are very good although we only used the double and I got the best nights sleep for a long time. Five star.

Welcome basket was lovely, castle was surprisingly warm! Great value for money and will definitely recommend to others. The free castle tour was good, the National Trust volunteers and staff, as always, were informative and helpful. Great family staycation!

A lovely stay at east wing.

everything was provided for a comfortable week.it was so clean. The complimentary basket was a lovely touch and most welcome, the Christmas tree was an added bonus as our stay was over the new year period. The grounds are fantastic to walk around and we saw deer one morning, unfortunately the castle was closed so we couldn’t visit which was shame. The bed a little soft but still slept well. And maybe a long mirror in the bedrooms would be handy. We would definitely stay again if we visited the area at a later date. A lovely start to 2023.

Wonderful property in an outstanding location.

Great for people who enjoy peace and quiet and good walks. Property very comfortable and has everything you could need.

The directions given for arriving at Castle Fraser East Wing were very good.

Car parking close to the accommodation was good. Access to the the house key was easy. The welcome food basket with milk and soft drinks in the fridge was a very warm and friendly gesture. The accommodation and equipment was well furnished, clean, and of good quality. Three issues could be improved on. Lighting in the lounge was inadequate, a clear notice in the entrance hall to remove your shoes when you first arrive, and we considered the double bed mattress to be too soft. Our overall impression would encourage us to return for another short break.

The East Wing of Castle Frazer was really very good.

we have stayed in many National Trust properties over the years, and this "Cottage in the Castle" was one of the best. The National Trust of Scotland staff did themselves proud with the standard shown. Excellent

We had a wonderful time staying at Castle Fraser.

The East Wing was very clean and comfortable with everything we could need. There was even a lovely basket of goodies left for our arrival. Thank you. The only issue was the cold water tap often ran hot so we bought bottles of drinking water. However, as this was a castle we didn’t mind too much! The grounds and walled garden are just beautiful and so well maintained. The staff in the castle were so friendly and knowledgeable, telling us lots of history about the castle. Also, the staff in the tea room were lovely too. We would highly recommend a stay here and would love to come back one day.
