Set in the Cheshire countryside in Picton, not far from the homely suburb of Upton-by-Chester is this delightful ground-floor cottage, The Shippon.
Set between its neighbours on either side, it is a perfect spot for a country getaway with your loved ones and friends.
Begin by coming into the social hub of the property, the open-plan living space, head left and sink into the corner sofa before the Smart TV, a great spot to wind down in at the end of the day.
Move across to the kitchen where you'll be preparing picnics for walks out in nearby nature, or cooking an evening meal for the group to be served up on the wooden dining table.
Use this space for gathering round to plan the rest of your trip, or spread out with a board game.
To either side of the living space are the two super-king-size bedrooms, both benefiting from en-suite bathrooms and zip/link beds, so you can request for them to be twin rooms instead, great for accommodating different party setups.
Expect to find exposed brick walls and wooden ceiling beams throughout, as well as bespoke features like the rope light fitting feature.
Relax out in the hot tub in the front enclosed courtyard, it can't get better that this!
Take your time to meander through the surroundings and see if you can spot some special visitors, the owner of The Shippon has published a Children’s bedtime storybook called Fudge’s Evening Adventure, the idea from this story came after the Owners Daughter was treated at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital.
The tale follows Fudge, a miniature dachshund, as she embarks on a quest to find a cozy place to rest her head for the night.
Along the way, she encounters various animal friends on and around the family farm.
A beautiful wooden sculpture trail to accompany the story can be enjoyed by guests, all proceeds from the book will go to Alder Hey Children's Charity, to thank them for their wonderful service, the book is able to be purchased directly from the owner, and so far over £13000 has been raised for this amazing charity.
To add to the wonder there is also a carved animal bug hunt, and guests can watch the wildlife in comfort as wildlife cameras have been set up and can be viewed live in the property.
The animal adventures don’t stop there, as guests will have the opportunity to meet the animals that live onsite, and with ample space and areas for children to play The Shippon really is a great choice for animal lovers and families alike.
Enjoy the surrounding countryside for walks, or take a trip into the Roman city of Chester for some sightseeing.

Lovely accomodation, it was spacious especially for two couples.
The orchard was lovely to walk round. We enjoyed watching the birdcams. We visited Chester, Port Sunlight, Nantwich, the zoo and of course Cheshire Oaks. All these places were in easy reach of the cottage. There was also a nice circular walk from the cottage.
Ideally situated for visiting Chester, Liverpool and North Wales and their historic buildings.
We found The Shippon to be a clean ,warm , well equipped, tastefully converted cottage. The web cam was very interesting as we were able to watch the owl, bats birds and farm animals. We loved the Orchard and the wooden carvings that related to the story of Fudge. Matt patiently fed the chickens with our 18 month old great grandson. We enjoyed the fresh eggs from the on site shop. We bought several copies of Fudge’s Evening Adventure which was produced to raise funds for Alderhay Hey hospital. The hot tub was well used. Really appreciated not having to strip the beds before departing. Hope to book again in the near future. Colin and Linda
Great location in the quiet countryside, well presented and very clean.
Quiet at night, hot tub great. Orchard lovely. Really enjoyed our stay, handy for Chester and North Walles coast. Only slight criticism is seating is a wee bit cramped for 4 on L shaped sofa but otherwise as good as it gets.
Lovely cottage.
Beautifully positioned with a lovely orchard and story played out in carved characters. In general clean but dining chairs very dusty obviously quite a while since being dusted also the cooker back plate and hob were very greasy.The spot light in the double bedroom flickered all night so had to be left on to stop the flickering.
The shippon is a beautifully presented cottage alongside 3 others on a country lane just outside of Chester.
It is wonderfully quiet, yet very close to so many attractions and beauty spots. It is a great place to explore from, and come back to in the evening. Jump into the hot tub after a long day walking around Chester zoo. Have a glass of wine in the garden and watch the swallows fly over. Take a walk into the orchard and check out the sculptures that tell the story of a dachshund called fudge trying to find a place to sleep. I can't speak highly enough of this place or the lovely family that own it. My family adored staying here

We had a fabulous stay in May.
The Shippon Cottage was immaculate, had everything we needed and more. There was a nice suprise of a welcome basket with tea coffee & biscuits plus milk and fizz in the fridge also provided robes and slippers for the hot tub. Brilliant location, rural and very quiet. Ideal for Chester Zoo, the outlet and town centre and more. Enjoyed it so much we have booked for next year.

It is such a lovely perfect cottage with everything you need provided. We loved relaxing in the hot tub, the little storybook trail, stargazing, bird watching, walks to local pubs or just for a little rambling walk. Everyone was so friendly and lovely. We will 100% return and recommend to both couples and families.

Matt was very welcoming on arrival. Information booklet was great and welcome hamper was a lovely touch too. Our son loved the trail around the garden and visiting the goats each day. Everything was provided even dressing gowns and slippers. Cottage is in a great location, close to Chester Zoo, Cheshire Oaks and a visit to BeWilderWood. We would definitely return and thank you for a much needed relaxing week away. Our son even cried as he didnt want to leave. Thanks again property is a credit to you.
A little gem - the information pack was fabulous - so much detail.
Loved our stay & would stay again if visiting the area. One small comment - the sofa was a little uncomfortable but it didn’t affect our enjoyment of staying there.

What an absolute find, it was just what we needed.
From the moment we booked we were sent the most informative email about the property and its location, local dining, shops & places of interest. It was easy to find and not to far out of chester, we had a planned day at the races and it cost us I think £15 by taxi. When we arrived the hot tub was ready to jump into we were given robes, slippers & a bottle of procesco. Also a lovely welcome hamper on the table with tea coffee biscuits and also milk in the fridge. This property is one of the best we’ve stayed in, beds were very comfortable & you had everything you would need to enjoy your stay. We will 100% be back again.

The shopping had the comfiest beds I’ve slept in a long time! Beautiful surroundings with the orchard you can explore! We had no clue we were so close to Cheshire oaks too! We will be back!
Stayed for 3 nights from the 9 May.
The Cottage is excellent, well positioned for a lot of places to visit, North Wales, Cheshire Oaks, Chester to name a few. With 2 en suite bedrooms it was perfect for our booking for 4 adults. The grounds were attractive and well looked after as well as proving us with views of the barn owls via a camera on the tv. The owner was both friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend the property

Celebrating a 60th birthday so we wanted somewhere special, and The Shippon did not disappoint!
Everything was perfect, well equipped, Matt was very helpful when we wanted a couple of country pubs. We especially loved channel 800 on the tv which is a webcam, we’re you can watch the wildlife in their home environments, a really nice touch. This was the perfect place for us with our two toddlers. Thank you so much for providing two cots and the hamper of supplies. Our boys also loved the toy cupboard. We can tell a lot of thought has gone into what your guests need and you had everything covered. We are looking forward to our next stay with you.
It was a beautiful place, in an amazing setting.
Just a couple of niggles with it though. The hottub water level needed raising a bit, and also turn the heating up on them. They’re called HOTTUBS. Mine was like getting in a bath an hr after its run. Could only manage 10 minutes if that at a time. Apart from that, you’ve done an amazing job with the building work over the years..

A fantastic cottage set in a beautiful, peaceful setting, made all the better with a relaxing hottub.
The cottage was immaculately clean with lovely thick towel, bathrobes and slippers. A thoughtful welcome pack incudong a bottle of prosecco, which was lovely after a long journey. A couple of small issues were dealt with very quickly and efficiently, thank you Matt. Ideal location for visiting Chester, Liverpool and the Zoo. I would highly recommend this cottage, we had a wonderful time.

A lovely cottage in gorgeous grounds. The nature trail,the animal cams were just wonderful. Our granddaughter especially loved the goats. Lovely to find milk and prosecco in the fridge on arrival..all bases covered! Our only irritation was the sofa as mentioned by a few before us. It's okay for two but four adults and a toddler. It was cramped and a little uncomfortable. Also we found the shower water temperature as tepid bordering on cold. Would we stay here again? Absolutely Possibly in separate cottages...Matt our host was on hand if needed and really welcoming and warm. It's a great location for Chester Zoo and Cheshire Oaks too.
Superb property and very well run by the owners
The Shippon was a fabulous property.
It was decorated and finished to the highest of standards and well equipped with everything you would need. We felt very comfortable and at home. The hot tub was an added bonus and was so relaxing after busy days exploring Chester! I wish we could have booked for longer! It was very lovely of the owners to leave us a bottle of Prosecco and other goodies. The only minor thing I would say is that it could really benefit for a new sofa, the base underneath the cushions looked like it had been repaired with boards and the base Cushions kept slipping off. I would definitely still return and would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to explore Chester and all the fabulous places in this area.

Fantastic cottage !
Everything about the place is perfect, absolutely no negative points. We found the property to be perfectly clean and all fixtures and fittings were lovely. Everything you need is available and the cottage was so welcoming and cosy to provide the ideal place to relax. The owner Matt and his family were very helpful and immediately made us feel at home. Beds were comfortable and and relaxing and the quality of the bedding and towels was absolutely first class. The hot tub in the garden was ideal and well used by all our family. Fantastic weather over the full week we stayed so the picnic table in the garden was perfect for sitting in the evening sun ! The cottage is in a brilliant location with the Cheshire Oaks and Chester Zoo only minutes away. Lots of other fabulous attractions within an hour’s drive so there is something to suit all tastes I could continue for ages with superlatives but suffice to say the Shippon is the perfect place to stay and enjoy a wonderful holiday ! Thanks again to Matt for letting us stay there and best wishes for the family in future.

It was nice to be provided with all the basic necessities as you would have at home; toiletries, spare toilet roll, bin liners, dish washer tablets to name but a few. Plus a generous welcome pack including milk, coffee, tea, biscuits and prosecco! The hot tub was very relaxing after a days sight seeing. All in all we had a very comfortable stay. Thank you.

The hot tub is great and the beds are really comfy. Great location for getting to Cheshire oaks and Chester. Lovely lay out in the place and plenty of activities for the kids too from board games to little toys. Would highly recommend staying here we will be back again.
This was the cleanest, most comfortable holiday cottage I have ever stayed in.
Everything has so much thought and care put into it. I loved waking up and watching the barn owls on the wee cameras, and taking a dip in the hot tub in the evening. The welcome package was a lovely surprise. We can’t wait to return!

The shippon was clean, comfortable and well looked after.
The basket of things (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, jams) was a lovely surprise and you put milk and wine in the fridge which was great after a long journey. The garden was lovely with the wooden animals telling the story from the book. The animals in the owners garden was lovely to see on the web cam and in person. The location was great for Cheshire oaks, Zoo and other places in the area. The owners of the place were very helpful and friendly. We will come again.

Very well clean & maintained cottage, lovely selection of extras waiting for us on our arrival.
Beds were really comfortable, the Jacuzzi was clean, warm and had great pressure jets. Even our toddler loved the cottage & area, the owner was really friendly letting our little one stroke his dogs and the orchid with the different animal characters making a story was lovely & well maintained. They provided a good size cot and high chair when requested, there was even a good selection of toys and games for him. It's in a great area for both a peaceful getaway and lots of places to visit close by, even for families (with a car, but parking is provided)

Brilliant, cozy property.
Perfect for me, my husband, 3 and 1 year old. Hut tub is in the front garden which doesn’t have any privacy but that wasn’t a problem for us. Home owners have thought of a lot of little things that usually gets forgotten. Milk and Prosecco in the fridge on arrival and an amazing tub of teas, coffees, biscuits and more as a welcome package. Extra details also went along way eg more than enough bin bags, dishwasher tablets, clingfilm, tin foil etc. Tv cabinet had alot of kids toys in which went down well with the kids and lovely robes and slippers for the hot tub transfer. 10 minutes from Chester, perfect location for a day at the zoo. Loved our holiday…..thank you x

Exactly what it says and looks like. Location is fantastic for any sort of occasion. So quiet and peaceful. Hosts had excellent communication before staying - very helpful with lots of things. Would definitely be returning. Thank you so much :)
We had a problem with the water pressure.
We mentioned it to the owner. We hoped it might have been seen to but this did not happen so were quite disappointed as it did impact on our stay as we could only run one tap/ shower at a time. We found the sofa very uncomfortable. The large cushions kept slipping down and there was no back support. The cottage was nice and warm although the heating controls were quite complicated. Not enough crockery/cutlery. Beds very comfortable.
Hi, We are so sorry to hear the problem with the water pressure affected your stay. We were working very hard behind the scenes to source parts and get them fitted in a timely manor, we had temporally reduced pressure in order to maintain an acceptable temperature and we are sorry this meant you couldn’t run two showers at once. The problem has since been rectified and we are back to full temperature and full pressure! Acting on your feedback, we have also now posted clear instructions next to the heating controls. This property exceeded our expectations and is highly recommended.
The location is amazing, in the countryside but a short ride to several pubs and chester town centre. The cottage has everything you need, dressing gowns and slippers provided which were great for the hot tub. Tea, coffee and prosecco on arrival....modern, clean and comfortable, we will be booking again for same time next year.
Very good stay overall, the owner provided a comprehensive range of items which is really convenient.
The property is very comfortable and have 2 separate toilets/bathroom which is also very handy. Most importantly it is at good location, close to chester zoo, the outlet and a lot of other things as well. Would strongly recommend.

Just got back from our second stay in the Shippon, had a lovely relaxing stay in this amazing property.
Everything was spotlessly clean, lovely comfy beds, dressing gowns & slippers provided for use in the hot tub. The owners had left a welcome pack of tea, coffee, biscuits, milk and a bottle of presseco. Loved watching the Alpaca cam & owl cam on the Tv. Would highly recommend a stay here and look forward to returning ourselves.

It had everything we needed and made a good base for our stay in the area. The spa was wonderful. Plenty to do in the area too. In fact too much! We will have to return for another stay!
Very impressed with our stay at Lower Farm holiday cottages, we stayed in The Shippon.
Excellent cleanliness and was provided with everything we needed, from tin foil to an iron, the cottage was well equipped with every day essentials. We couldn’t fault our stay at all, everything was at a very high standard and a lovely renovation done on the property keeping original pieces like the wood beams to add character. We enjoyed the hot tub and looking around the orchard, a lovely place for adults and children to enjoy and we picked some delicious fruit from the trees. Friendly owners and were quick to contact us with a reply to any queries we had. Would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone, good location and we enjoyed the scenery and had a nice walk around.

We have not long returned from an absolutely wonderful stay at The Shippon (Lower Farm Holiday Cottages).
We have stayed in a number of holiday cottages around Chester over the years and this was certainly one of the best we have ever stayed at. The location is fantastic and very easy to get to all the main attractions around Chester, but still with the feeling that you are out in the countryside. The facilities at the Lower Farm Cottages are perfect and The Orchard area is wonderful. Our children spent many a happy hour playing over there. The family who own the cottages are lovely and couldn't be more accommodating towards us. We can't wait to return and would certainly recommend these cottages to anyone looking for a home away from home near Chester.

Lovely! Spacious for us and our little boy. Close to alot of attractions /activities. There was a lovely welcome pack on our arrival and there was additional things in the cupboard to make our stay even more relaxing and enjoyable eg. Every attention to detail. 5 Star decor, cleanliness, interior design, and the imaginatively kept garden. The hot tub is very welcome after a day out. And the nature cameras are lovely to watch. A real credit to the owners.

I have stayed here before which is why I booked again. It’s perfect!! Clean and tidy and the hot tub is amazing! We asked if the hot tub could be turned up slightly, it wasn’t cold at all but we just like it that little bit warmer. It was turned up no issues. Chester centre is only a 10 minutes drive away, as is Cheshire Oaks so it’s in the perfect location. As we was going away with another couple the two bathrooms are so handy! The kitchen is fully equipped for everything you need to make food! Thankyou so much again for a perfect stay!

Perfect location - great facilities inside - we brought things along with us such as kitchen utensils and extra toiler paper but none of this was needed. Lovely deco Close to the Centre - we used a taxi that was in an information book left by the owners - this was a cheap price A lovely little welcome hamper filled with hot chocolate tea, coffee and biscuits - We thought this was a nice touch We had a perfect stay. Only point was one of the light bulbs in the large lights seemed to be out but as there was another large one, small one and spot lights it did not make a difference to our stay. Wonderful place - Highly recommend and will be coming back!!

It was well equipped with kitchen utensils, and the bathrooms very well maintained. The grounds were nice to wander. The owners were very helpful when we queried the wifi, which is very good when you get the signal. Our only criticism is the lounge seating was not really adequate for 4 adults. The corner settee would not seat 4 people.
We had a lovely stay at The Shippon.
The cottage is immaculate with plenty of space and everything you need. The hot tub was great and our children enjoyed playing in the large garden. There is lots to do with children in the local area and we had a fantastic week.

Only reason it’s a 4 star not 5 was the 10pm curfew for the hot tub was a bit early for us but we do understand why it’s in place and respected it.

We stayed here for 4 nights and it was absolutely perfect!
The location was brilliant, so close to the city centre, Cheshire Oaks, the zoo, etc, but also far enough away to feel like a little country retreat. The cottage itself was beautiful, bed extremely comfortable and the hot tub was lovely. I would definitely recommend this place and we will be back ourselves. Thank you very much to the hosts for such a wonderful stay

Loved the attention to detail in the cottage's features and decoration. The beds were comfortable and the location, whilst in the countryside, was only a 10-15 minute drive to all amenities and attractions. A perfect and relaxing break. Thanks.

The accommodation was FIRST CLASS ( 5 star standards). It was easy to find, close to everything, and far enough away not to impede on our experience. The amenities on site were brilliant. Easy safe parking.Gardens to relax in, decked area for shade. Rachel and Matt were very welcoming, their welcome pack was very tasteful, along with their brief of the surrounding area and places to go/visit, it helped our overall experience. Can't find any faults.

The extras the owners had left on arrival were very much appreciated. The owners went out of their way to help us when we needed advice again really appreciated. The cottage was so central for everything but tucked away enough to feel like you were in the middle of the country. We enjoyed the Zoo which is literally on your doorstep. The Ice cream farm was a hit with not only my 2-year-old granddaughter but all of us! There are plenty of local pubs offering delicious food but if we wanted to cook for ourselves, the supermarkets were very close. We visited Cheshire Oaks a few times and got some great bargains. Finally, it was lovely to relax in the pristine hot tub after being out all day, then getting a good night sleep in the super comfy beds. I would highly recommend these cottages; I don't think anyone would be disappointed. Thank you so much, exceptional value for money.
Just the lovely special touches milk wine water and an assortment of biscuits jams tea and coffee all beautifully presented great owners who nothing was too much trouble for them all together made a terrific break

We had a fab family holiday and the kids loved the Hot tub.
We recently visited this cottage and were very impressed.
The welcome supplies including cereal, milk and fizzy wine were really appreciated. The location of the cottage was excellent being around 2 miles from Cheshire Oaks and around 5 miles from Zoo and Chester. The cottage was well equipped with dishwasher and appropriate supplies. The Netflix was greatly appreciated by the kids and we loved being able to watch catch up TV via IPlayer and 4OD. WiFi speed was adequate for our needs. There was a selection of things to entertain our boys too. Nice orchard with fruit trees to play in. Only suggestions were that under sofa and beds needed vacuumed otherwise cleaning was spot on. Would also suggest as no laundry that might be benefit in providing different towels for use with hot tub so that could segregate and keep bathroom ones dry for only showering.

Really well decorated and spacious, comfy sofa and bed, well equipped kitchen and lovely hot tub. Little extras provided by the hosts really made the holiday, and we will definitely be booking to go again. Couldn’t fault it at all!

the welcome pack full of goodies for all the family to enjoy was really appreciated but didn't expect it so lovely surprise, The family were lovely, very welcoming and they also let us use apples from their trees too which were nice of them. The hot tub was fantastic,there were even your own slippers n robes for each family member to use going to and from the hot tub area which was a great idea. We will be certainly making this one of our favourite cottages and recommending these cottages to friends n family, can't wait for our next visit to the Shippon.
