  • "WOW! We have just returned from the most wonderful stay at this beautiful cottage."

This was out first time in the Cotswolds and Stable Cottage, the owners Julie and David, Molly and their gorgeous dogs Sheba and Sid made our experience even more wonderful, and they gave us so much information on the local area, and places to visit which was invaluable to us. The cottage was everything that we could hope for, old with the most wonderful features within, a lovely garden area with seating that we could enjoy with the lovely weather that we had. There were horses that we were welcomed to see if we wanted to, which we did, and they are beautiful, and we were free to see them whenever we wanted, and they were only across the yard. The cottage is within the land of the owners and this did not in any way affect our stay, and we enjoyed seeing the family daily and there was no intrusion being so near to them. The cottage is up a very long lane away from the roads and so quiet and idylic, in the middle of fields and miles of walks that we enjoyed to neighboring villages. We have booked again for next year, and we would not look to book and stay anywhere else despite traveling all around the Cotswolds, and seeing many places, this is the place for us. We would like to address the last review as this is not the experience that we found. Comments regarding the farmers being present most of the day, yes it is a working farm, yes the stables are close by, however, we had absolutely no privacy issues with this, or any impact on our stay. We loved talking to the family daily, and they are absolutely lovely, and could not do enough for us. We had no stale smells in the cottage, and windows were clean and open before our arrival, and several diffusers throughout the cottage, not to remove any smells as there were none. We could read the oven dials fine, there were none missing that we could see. The sofas were not dirty, someone maybe a guest had put a hot cup on the velvet sofa which had marked it, and yes there was a little hole in the sofa which did not impact us using the clean sofa and clean cushions to enjoy. The double bed was comfortable and we had no issues with the mattress, however, the owners told us they were awaiting a new mattress, and we did not feel the need to strip the bed back at all and have a look. The dogs we loved seeing every day, and if you did not want to interact with them you could just ignore them, or continue with your day, they would just wander off. To all future bookings look at the 4/5* reviews, as our review is a true representation of the property and our stay, and the most wonderful owners, their daughter and their dogs, you made our time and stay extremely enjoyable. • "The photos advertised are not a true reflection of the property."

Must be a few years old. It was a shared doorway with the next cottage. There was no privacy at all. The farmers were present most of the day from early in the morning (7.00am) whereby the riding stables are attached to our lounge and they get the horses out to ride. Again in the evening too. The gates are constantly left open so the owners dogs are roaming around and our own dog could not relax. Inside the cottage it smelt stale and musty. No windows opened to airiate the rooms. The glass panel on the cooker was dirty and the number dials were non existent. The dinning table was quite sticky. The sofa arms were grubby and dirty and there was a hole in the side of the sofa. The cushions were also smelly and flat. The log fire was also dirty and had old ambers left inside. The remote control for the tv actually had plasters on the back to stick the flap from falling off. All the windows upstairs and down were dirty. Going upstairs, the wooden steps were all chipped and scratched. The main bedroom was of a good size but a tiny built in cupboard was not big enough to hang any clothes. The chest of drawers were dirty and scratched in both bedrooms. The bed in the main bedroom was very uncomfortable. Taking the covers off revealed a very old torn sponge mattress that had stains on. We had to use a quilt from the 2nd bedroom to put over to give some comfort but it did not suffice. The 2nd bedroom is only suitable for children and not adults as so tiny. There was a lot of dirty marks on the wall beside the bed. It was a very disappointing and such a let down as needs a total renovation spent on it and definitely not worth nearly £900.00 it cost us. We left a day early. We believe that we are entitled to compensation for a totally unsatisfactory holiday and totally a mis-sold representation of a cottage in the Cotswolds. We have photographic evidence if you wish to see.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your holiday at Blackpitt. We do feel a responsibility to our guests to try to make sure that they have an enjoyable holiday and as you see from other feedback and repeat bookings this is usually the case. However, Blackpitt is not a chocolate box location it is a working farm as advertised and we appreciate that it may not be to everyone’s taste. It is a pity that you did not mention anything when you were staying with us because some of the issues could have been dealt with straight away. For example, our dogs Sid and Sheba love to greet the guests and Sid the collie is a particular favourite because he loves to play ball so he seeks out guests to play with him. However equally when guests prefer not to see the dogs we keep them with us, they are quite well trained. To clarify the situation with the stables, we are not a riding stables, but they are our own four horses, two are retired and two are ridden. The stables are not attached to the lounge, but in a separate yard. The heated tack room is next to the lounge, then the secure bike store and the garden furniture store. Horses are not stabled in any part of this building although they all have stable doors. We do tend to ride fairly early 07.00am and sometimes early evening especially with the recent very hot weather. We could take a different route from the stables, however the noise, (presumably horses hooves) has never been mentioned before. The horses are often an attraction to guests, either walking down to visit them in their stables, watching them work or seeing the farrier doing the shoeing. Fred (retired) the miniature horse is a great favourite with children and a great confidence giver for children who have not had much to do with horses. Regarding housekeeping issues, I agree that there were some lapses here which should have been picked up by us. We have ordered new remote for the TV, a new mattress, re- cleaned the glass door on the oven, and repaired the hole in the sofa arm. The dials on the oven are not that clear but this is a manufacturing issue and not wear & tear. At the end of the season we will get the decorator back as usual. The shared entrance to both cottages is the original entrance to what was once the old milking parlour. However, there is also a second external door to Stable cottage which leads directly to your grassed seating area. All the windows would have been open during the day and the previous weeks as the cottage has had guests all summer, the housekeeper would have shut them when she left at lunchtime prior to on your arrival that day. Again I do not understand why you did not raise your concerns during your stay. David and Julie.(Owners) Property Owner

  • "We hat a great 3 days at the cottage."

It was surrounded by gardens and fields and very quiet. Sid the dog csme by often to play ball and our dogs got along just fine. Loved the horses who were our neighbours. The cottage was clean and well equipped. The beds were comfortable! It would've been great to have a toilet upstairs by the bedrooms, but it didn't bother us much to go downstairs. The owners were very friendly and when we visit the area again we'd love to stay at this cottage again, as it was really great with dogs and very close to some of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds.

Thank you for your feedback, It was lovely to meet you and pleased you and your dogs enjoyed your stay here, Sid had a great time playing with your dogs. Unfortunately due to the layout of the cottage it is not possible to put the bathroom upstairs. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future. David and Julie. Property Owner

The highest town in the Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises olde worlde England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly Farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antique shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of Stow, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way, Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close to the town. Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' as the River Windrush runs through the centre, lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of the most popular Cotswold villages. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are all within easy reach and make a great day out. Cheltenham (20 miles away) is, architecturally, the most complete regency town in England. A spa town with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse-racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. At other times of year, it is host to literature, jazz, classical music, science and food and drink festivals. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called 'The City of Dreaming Spires’ has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within easy reach, making Stow-on-the-Wold an ideal base.
