Corner Cottage - A Fell and Loom -Swallows and Amazons crafted stay at Lowick Green, near Ulverston, within the Lake District National Park, Corner Cottage sits quietly among the fells with more than a little story behind its door.
Long before it became a holiday cottage, this quaint home was the village shop.
An old photograph shows a horse and cart drawn up outside and the name Walker’s Grocers painted across the building.
Years later, Arthur Ransome would make nearby Lowick Hall his home, and the coincidence of that Walker name – so familiar from Swallows and Amazons – became part of the inspiration for Corner Cottage today.
Care has been taken to maintain the spirit of Ransome’s stories rather than creating a theme: maps on the table, books by the log burner, muddy boots by the door and the promise of another adventure tomorrow.
Warm greens, ticking stripes and natural textures give the cottage a relaxed, traditional Lakeland feel.
Sleeping six, Corner Cottage has a king-size bedroom, double bedroom and a cosy bunk room known as Captain Flint’s Cabin, making it particularly well-suited to families.
Linen and towels are provided, along with locally made Pure Lakes toiletries in the family bathroom.
For younger explorers there is a Fell & Loom Expedition Kit for outdoor discoveries, a hidden geocache to find, and the complete Swallows and Amazons series to dip into at bedtime.
Wainwright guides and an OS Explorer map are there for grown-up expeditions too.
The kitchen is fully equipped for proper home cooking – from breakfast before a walk to supper after a day on the fells.
Afterwards, light the log burner, curl up with a book and decide where tomorrow might take you.
On rainy afternoons, draw the curtain, gather the crew and bring the world of Swallows and Amazons to life with Corner Cottage’s specially created shadow-puppet theatre.
And when the Lakeland weather does what it does best, there is an entrance porch for muddy boots and wet clothing, plus a traditional creel in the kitchen and a heated towel rail in the bathroom ready for soggy kit.
Outside, a separate private space offers somewhere to sit with a book, pour an aperitivo and watch the day slow down.
One small well-behaved dog is welcome, with a dog towel and blanket provided.
Lowick Green is perfectly positioned for discovering the southern reaches of the Lake District, with an abundance of walking trails, picturesque fells, and charming Lakeland communities nearby.
Spend a day in Ulverston, a characterful market town known for the Laurel & Hardy Museum, the prominent Hoad Monument, and its welcoming selection of independent shops and eateries.
Head to Coniston to admire the beauty of Coniston Water, browse the exhibits at The Ruskin Museum, or set off on memorable fell walks connected to the landscapes that inspired Arthur Ransome's much-loved tales.
Elsewhere, Bowness-on-Windermere offers leisurely cruises on Lake Windermere, family-friendly visits to The World of Beatrix Potter, and scenic strolls along the lakeshore, providing plenty of opportunities to soak up the magic of the Lake District.
