  • "We had a fabulous stay at The Old Laundry."

Lovely peacocks roaming the grounds, a trio of ponies behind the cottage in their stables every morning and evening was a highlight for me. The owners Carolyn and Chris are a delight, and super welcoming. The EV charger on site was one of the top reasons we chose the Old Laundry as we could be central to everything, and not worry about charging the car at the end of each day's exploring. We loved the freshly made cake, and the opportunity to purchase delicious fresh beef direct from the farm. Plan to return early next year ... We loved it start to finish and can't wait to repeat, and elongate the next stay.. Thanks for sharing your beautiful space with us!

There are plenty of walks across the 400 acres estate all directly from the front door. If you are looking for a peaceful break that is away from it all and wish connect with nature this is definitely the place to stay. The extra bonuses are the welcoming peacocks and guinea fowl who regularly like to greet you. The lemon drizzle cake was a welcome gesture from our friendly hosts. We will be back for another visit,

  • "This is the 4th cottage we have stayed in via the Sykes website and, in our opinion, not the best."

The photos of the interior of the property shown on Sykes website were obviously taken some time ago as they do not match the current décor. All the other properties we have stayed at there has always been a welcome pack which is very much appreciated, in particular a pint of milk in the fridge as after a very long journey a cup of tea is most welcome. At this property we were greeted by the owner who welcomed us with some ginger flap jacks which was a nice gesture but there was no milk. We would have brought our own had we known but a 10 hour journey in very hot weather made us decide not to as we sincerely thought there would at least be 1 pint of milk in the fridge. This property is very off the beaten track so no shops within walking distance. Fortunately we asked the owner where the nearest shop was to get some milk and she kindly went back to her own property to pour some milk in a jug for us. After a very welcome cup of tea we went to wash up the mugs and discovered there was no washing up liquid. Under the sink was a dirty sponge which had seen better days and a damp cloth which had clearly been used that day and just hung over a pot to dry which we felt was not very hygienic. There was nothing much else. Therefore the next day we drove to the nearest Tesco in Crediton to buy washing up liquid, sponges to wash up with, some kitchen roll (which is very useful) and, might we add, we also bought some tea-towels as the two that had been left were not very absorbent and, again, had seen better days. As stated above, this is the 4th cottage we have rented from Sykes and this is the first one that we have had to go out and buy cleaning materials. How on earth was we supposed to wash crockery up without washing up liquid. Cleaning materials are something that have always been provided in other properties we have stayed in and if the Old Laundry is not going to supply these essential items then it should at least say so. The sofa in the lounge area is extremely uncomfortable and after sightseeing all day is not ideal to sit and relax. The bedroom we slept in was quite cosy and the bed was very comfortable. The shower in the bathroom was very good but has obviously been leaking after constant use so could do with some maintenance. Overall, we would not describe this property as excellent as stated on Sykes website but “good” as we feel that it needs a little bit of maintenance and some homely touches which are not expensive but would make everybody’s stay much more comfortable and relaxing. It is in a lovely quiet setting with no noise other than from the wildlife which you would expect on a working farm.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your stay at The Old Laundry. We have taken the time to note and address all of the points you have raised to ensure future guests have the best holiday possible. Milk will now be provided on arrival at the property. We have also purchased washing up liquid, new tea towels and new sponges. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the peaceful setting and hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

Bed comfortable, but, boy! Was the bedroom hot. Would not want to be there during this hot spell. Again, as others have said, settee not exactly comfortable, also, rugs in living area could do with a clean(not just a vacuum). We did enjoy our stay, but got the impression a little bit of maintenance is needed(extractor fan casing needed refitting, exposed a few cobwebs!). Oh, and the peacock was delightful, if noisy at night!!

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. The property does have skylights which can be opened to help cool the property. The owners would have happy to help you, should you have had any problems. The extractor fan case and the living room rug will be attended. The owner offers her apologies for the peacock who seemed to be particularly vocal during your stay. Property Owner

Everyone we met was friendly and happy to put up with our 18 month old Cocker Spaniel rushing around, even the resident Peacock. We had fantastic weather for exploring the estate and local area but pack your boots if it's going to be wet. Just one note for dog owners, the garden directly outside the cottage is not enclosed but the estate is tucked well away from the local roads. • "The Old Laundry at Ashridge Court was a mid-winter, mid-week break from everyday working life for my wife and I."

It lived up to all our expectations in every way. The Old Laundry was extremely comfortable & clean. The cottage has been lovingly restored to a high standard with a blend of traditional and modern features, equipped with everything you need for your stay. We chose to take a break in February to Ashridge Court after flights for a trip to Gibraltar were cancelled. I’m glad the flights were cancelled! We experienced every type of weather during our stay, heavy rain, hail, strong winds even a little thunder & lightning, but with a plentiful supply of logs for the wood burner brought to the door by the owner, good books, wine & cheese and the odd film we kicked back and relaxed, and the bad weather only added to the experience. We had plenty of settled weather too, and as the cottage is within a working country estate we were free to wander the extensive tracks and woods as we wished, we did so with our dog and there is plenty of wildlife to see. The owners and everyone we came across who work on the estate were completely charming, pleasant and really happy to share their knowledge of how the estate is managed and worked. The whole ethos of the estate is environmentally and wildlife friendly, keep an eye out for the Peacock. A stay at the Old Laundry would be fantastic at any time of the year, but we particularly enjoyed the mid-winter aspect of it and if you don’t mind wrapping up and getting a bit mucky then I would recommend it to anyone, we came back completely recharged and a little more in touch with our magnificent countryside. Oh, and, if you wish, you can buy some of their slow grown, grass fed beef products. We did and it is outstanding.

A walled parking and patio area offer a degree of privacy and extensive rolling views of rural Devonshire. If you have an interest in flora and fauna, immediate access to open country side for walking and have an interest in the development of an old estate then this would suit. It is a working farm and can become a community hub; however, everybody we met was friendly and invested in informing us of the part they have played in bringing the estate back to life. The moors, north coast, Drogo castle and Rosemoor, RHS gardens are a short drive away so interest for all. We can highly recommend it.

The property

Set on the fringes of North Tawton, The Old Laundry is a detached cottage, converted from an old laundry building on the Ashridge Court estate and working farm, a 12th century estate that spans nearly 400 acres in woodland and fields.

Although The Old Laundry has been converted with modern utilities, it has kept its historic feel with wooden panelled walls and classic décor.

It is perfect for walkers and cyclists due to the excellent surrounding area, and guests can ramble freely throughout the estate's woodlands and grounds.

Set over two floors, this cottage begins with an entrance hallway, where you can kick of your boots after a long walk about the estate grounds and hang up your coats in the cloakroom or utility room, which features a freezer, Belfast sink, washing machine and dryer, granting you extra room in the living space.

Moving through to the open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, you can make the evening meal using the modern electric oven and hob with your partner or friends while others can sit at the dining table, enjoying a glass of wine.

You can look forward to cosying up in the sitting area in front of the woodburning stove, with the added benefit of underfloor heating which is fantastic for those chilly winter nights.

Head up to the first floor, where you will find two good-sized bedrooms, comprising of a king-size double bed and a single room with wardrobe.

Start your day right with a hot shower in the neatly sized bathroom that also has basin and WC, and get ready for a day of exploring.

For those evenings that you would like to spend alone, you can sit out on the secluded private patio and unwind with a glass of wine.

The small village of North Tawton has several pubs and shops within the community, so you don’t have to go too further afield to have all you need.

The Ashridge Court estate is ideally positioned to explore both Cornwall and Devon, with the A30 just a 15-minute drive if you are wanting to go further afield, and to the south is the Dartmoor National Park, where a whole host of outdoor activities are available to you from walking or cycling, to horse riding or wild swimming.

In the neighbouring town of Okehampton, you can visit the largest castle in Devon and English Heritage Site, Okehampton Castle, with a riverside picnic area and beautiful woodland walks, it's great for bird lovers.

A clever blend of traditional features with a modern renovation, The Old Laundry is everything you want for an idyllic break.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
