  • "Property and owners were amazing."

Property was clean, comfortable and cosy. Beds were extremely comfortable and every attention to detail has been thought out carefully to make sure every need was met and it certainly was. This property is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, towels, blankets, dressing gowns, utensils, pots, pans, glasses, crockery, fridge, freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, dvds, games, the list is endless….just like home from home. Even a tasty cream tea along with eggs, bread, milk, biscuits, juice, cereal, jams….and not forgetting the luxury of a hot tub all ready to use on arrival with spectacular views. And the garden which is dog friendly ensuring they could not escape. The views and scenery were spectacular and this property is set in a rural but central location and worked perfectly as a base for us to explore surrounding areas and close enough to travel to Cornwall. Peter was on hand and extremely helpful with places to visit, things to do and just helped make our stay relaxing and stress free. Even down to looking after our doggies while we went out for an anniversary meal and providing us with a surprise bottle of bubbly for our anniversary. We will be returning next year….. sooner if we can….. and can not praise the property and Peter and Jackie enough x everything we hoped for and more

  • "We stayed at Barley Meadow for a week."

I have nothing but good things to say about our break. As is mentioned in several of the reviews the owners went far beyond what they needed to do to ensure we had a great break. The property is secluded and has an excellent area to allow your dogs out. Is well maintained and stocked. It has an interesting array of animals and was such a pleasant place to be. Good location to see all that Devon has to offer and you can tell in the visitors book by the amount of return visits that you have found a gem. We would thoroughly recommend Barley Meadow and will return I am sure. On a personal note, Thank you to Pete and Jackie. It was a pleasure to meet you and we appreciate all your help during our stay and even after we got back home. No doubt we'll see you again soon. Your positive reputation is very well deserved.

Hot tub was a wonderful sunset treat to mark the end of every day. Peter was a gem. And I already miss Fly and Belle (the ponies!)

The cottage is comfortable and well equipped, with a safely fenced garden overlooking a paddock where the cottage owners sheep and ponies graze. The garden has plenty of seating and offers lovely views at sun rise, sunset and the stars at night. Both garden and cottage are dog and child friendly. Owners Jackie and Peter are fabulous hosts and manage to balance remaining available if needed yet completely unobtrusive otherwise. We and our dogs felt welcome and at home from the moment we arrived, a super location and booking choice.

  • "We were in Devon for my son's bile race and needed a place to stay for the weekend."

We chose this cottage based on price and location and really weren't expecting very much. The cottage was so much larger and comfortable than we expected, we really were blown away. An enormous lounge, separate dining room, very comfortable beds - all exceeded our expectations. All the little extras, such as toilet roll, washing up liquid, tea bags, shampoo - I could go on - are so much more than expected from a self catering cottage. and of course the hot-tub, scones on arrival. Room for improvement - the wardrobe in one of the single bedrooms wouldn't open because they hit the bed, and I dearly wanted deeper cereal bowls as they couldn't hold the amount of cereal my two active children eat. But these are minor details that didn't matter very much, and were clearly outweighed by all the positives. We have come home feeling we have been spoilt and I would definitely stay again if we come back to the Devon area.

  • "Beautifully furnished spacious cottage, very welcoming owners Peter and Jaquie who live next door."

Comes with own garden which was perfect for our dogs but our dogs are very small and managed to escape under gate. The owners have really thought of everything here - including jam, ketchups, cooking oil, cling film, hand wash, toilet rolls etc. The kitchen is well stocked with every utensil you could need. The washing machine and separate dryer were a great help as was the dishwasher. The beds were soo comfortable- now want new beds at home as these were soo nice. The hot tub was lovely and hot and could be used at any time as it was at a constant 37 degrees and you did not have to wait for it to heat up. The views are truly beautiful and it is so quiet and a real get away from everything location. The owners horses and sheep/chickens are at bottom of garden which my children enjoyed feeding and petting. The welcome pack of milk, bread, orange juice, cream tea and cereals was a great help. The only negative is the location - this is a very rural setting. There are two narrow unlit windy roads to this property. The first road is narrow for one car with lots of passing places, the second lane again approx 2 miles plus ( seems longer) is steep, extremely narrow and ? Any passing places. We would have to leave our day out by 4 pm to get back before dark as it was too stressful driving down these lanes in pitch dark. There are no local shops or pubs you can walk too. There is a garage approx 7 miles away but that is all. I did ring Sykes prior to booking this cottage as previously stayed in Devon at another remote cottage as didn’t want to be in a remote setting with narrow unlit country lanes and was assured this property was short distance from main road. There is a main road a short drive from left of property but this was closed whilst we were staying here and you still have to go down the narrow lane to exit the property. The sat nav will only recognise and bring you in via the long unlit narrow country lanes. I would recommend this property for a romantic getaway weekend/week with hot tub but if you like to explore and like going out in evening and don’t like narrow unlit country lanes this is it the property for you.

The location is very rural and peaceful but within easy reach of the places one is likely to visit. The owners are extremely charming and helpful. The cottage itself is very well appointed , warm and very comfortable, and the welcome pack that the owners left ready for our arrival was probably the best we have experienced. The WIFI facilities are excellent returning high speeds which was a welcome surprise considering the rural location and was very helpful in planning outings for the following day(s). My two granddaughters who accompanied us made ample use of the hot tub throughout the week and very quickly made friends with the owners horses and "fat fred" the cat. In summary I would have no hesitation is recommending this cottage to anyone who wants a very enjoyable week. We always have high expectations when we book a cottage and on this occasion our expectations were more than fulfilled. If you plan to visit this part of Devon, book this cottage.

The property

Okehampton 7 miles.

This traditional stone cottage with a hot tub is next door to the owners’ farmhouse on a non-working farm in a rural setting close to Dartmoor National Park, 7 miles from Okehampton.

Set within a quiet setting surrounded by meadows grazed by the owners’ ponies, this spacious cottage provides a countryside getaway for a family or group of friends who will enjoy horse riding, walking or cycling in this picturesque area in the heart of Devon.

With two reception rooms and a large kitchen with breakfast area, there is plenty of space for the family to spend time together and in the sitting room there is a large sofa bed, ideal for an extra couple who can utilise the ground floor cloakroom plus share the upstairs bathroom.

There is a double bedroom plus two single bedrooms, all sharing the family bathroom which has both a bath and a separate walk-in shower.

The large private garden at the side of the cottage is a perfect spot where dogs and children can play safely, and adults can enjoy the quiet peace of a rural garden whilst relaxing with a refreshing drink, unwinding in the hot tub or dining alfresco.

The local village of Bridestowe has a small shop, and there are numerous friendly pubs in this area whilst the market town of Okehampton has shops, a cinema, museum and heritage railway centre with train journeys to Meldon reservoir.

There is now a cycle route from Okehampton to Lydford following the disused length of railway and offering amazing views and pub stops en-route.

Dartmoor National Park provides fun-filled activities such as pony riding, tor bagging, letterboxing and exploring miles of rugged open space.

About the location

Exeter 23 miles.

Okehampton is a busy market town on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park and near the highest and most dramatic areas of the moor, where Yes Tor rises to a height above 2000 feet. To the north of Okehampton are some beautiful rolling Devon hills where small farming villages nestle amidst woods and fields with plenty of gently flowing rivers. The fabulous Roadford Reservoir offers a multitude of watersport activities and fishing opportunities. Okehampton has a prominent medieval castle overlooking a wooded river valley, the Museum of Dartmoor Life (where Tourist Information can be found) and Okehampton train station, which has been restored to its 1950s glory running trains along a scenic route to Meldon the highest station in southern England. The town also has spectacular views across Dartmoor, access to fabulous walks and Simmons Park where you’ll find a children’s adventure playground. This area of Devon has plenty of farm shops and country inns serving good food where visitors can spend time relaxing and unwinding amongst unspoilt countryside.
