  • "We had a lovely stay at Bridge Cottage."

The cottage was very quirky and so big! Paul the owner came to see us and we had a chat with him. He left us a welcome hamper which was there on our arrival, all locally sourced items. We will certainly be back when next in the area, and would definitely recommend.

Thanks for the kind words, would love to see you again Paul. Property Owner

    Ideal!

Thank you for your very positive comments saying how well equipped spacious and comfortable Bridge Cottage is, however we are surprised by the low rating, it doesn't seem to match your comments. Do hope there has been a mix up. Property Owner

  • "Wonderful cottage with everything we needed."

Great local pub for food which we enjoyed. Banged our heads a few times going to the bathroom but that was us not remembering the low doorway! It's a beautiful house. Great location for exploring if you enjoy navigating narrow country roads at times. We explored south Devon, Dorset and Somerset so it's ideally located for visiting places like Seaton, Lyme Regis and some lovely National Trust properties in Somerset.

Thank you for such a positive review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "TV didn’t work properly when we arrived (Saturday)."

The picture was purple so we couldn’t watch it. Maitenance man came very quickly but couldn’t resolve it. New TV delivered on Monday but meant my partner couldn’t watch several football matches. Towels are way too small! Barely went round me. You should provide bath sheets. Ants in the kitchen Horrible whirring noise in the second stairwell that went all night. Think this may have been a meter of some kind. Meant that 2 of the rooms were very noisy at night so I had to wear earplugs. Downstairs bed was 2 singles pushed together so it was uncomfortable.

The TV problem was unexpected and apologies for that. The towels are the usual size. Thank you for raising our awareness re Ants in the kitchen so that we can deal with it. The noise under the stairs is only there when a tap is running, or toilet sistern is refilling. We are sorry you found the bed uncomfortable, as there were only two of you we do hope you found one of the other bedrooms satisfactory. • "We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage."

The quirky stairs and sloping walls just added to the whole atmosphere of a much loved and well maintained family home. Our dog loved the stream and walks through the fields. We would highly recommend this cottage and the area as a whole for a great holiday.

Thanks for the generous comments about Bridge Cottage. I am happy to know you enjoyed your stay and the house. If you could tell me what was inaccurate about the listing I will try and improve it. Thanks again Property Owner

Unusually large proportions for such an old cottage. There is absolutely everything you could possibly need on hand for a lovely break.

The property

Dating back to the 1750s, Bridge Cottage is an impressive Grade 2 listed cottage located in the pretty East Devon village of Dalwood.

Steeped in history, this 3 bedroomed cottage retains many original character features and period details which are complimented by the owner's personal touches throughout.

Set within glorious countryside, with pretty cottage-style gardens, this is a wonderful pet-friendly property ideal for families or friends looking for a peaceful retreat yet within easy reach of the coast. This magnificent cottage is arranged over two floors and, in typical long house style, many of the rooms are interconnecting.

From the parking area at the front of the cottage, you will enter to find a magnificent lounge with high vaulted beamed ceilings.

Large windows flood the room with light, giving a wonderful outlook over the pretty cottage-style garden.

A cosy woodburning stove is the focal point of the room and is perfect for chilly evenings.

The kitchen, in one of the oldest parts of the cottage, oozes charm with its mix of exposed timbers, slate flooring and an AGA yet with the convenience of modern appliances including an electric oven and hob, microwave and dishwasher to ease your stay.

The adjoining dining room is another spacious room where mealtimes can be savoured - whether breakfast before your day out or a delicious evening meal.

A smaller sitting room provides a quiet spot for relaxing with a good book.

The first of the bedrooms, a king-size bedroom, which can be made up as a twin room, is located on the ground floor with an inglenook fireplace (though this wood-burner is not in use), and a little sun-room – perfect for that early cup of tea.

A ‘secret’ staircase leads up to another king-size bedroom on the first floor.

The third bedroom, a double with adjoining dressing area, is accessed via a separate staircase leading from the kitchen.

Both first-floor bedrooms are serviced by a Jack and Jill style shower room, with a stylish wet room located on the ground floor.

Outside, the garden is dotted with beautiful trees, shrubs and cottage-style planting with extensive lawns and patio seating areas where alfresco dining can be enjoyed.

A stream runs at the end of the garden adding the relaxing sound of running water while you sit and enjoy your evening drink.

Located in the beautiful unspoilt village of Dalwood, the maze of bridleways, footpaths and narrow winding lanes will appeal to the keen walker, gentle ambler, and those with a love for the great outdoors.

The village pub, The Tuckers Arms, is a 14th-century classic country pub offering a friendly welcome served alongside locally sourced food and drinks.

The village also has a small community-run shop, with a small coffee bar.

Venturing further afield, the nearby towns of Honiton and Axminster both have weekly markets for those who prefer to cook and the nearby Millers Farm Shop in neighbouring Kilmington offers an array of local groceries, as well as having a tasty tea shop.

Take a trip to nearby Burrow Farm Gardens where a leisurely stroll through its award-winning gardens is recommended.

For popular days out, the nearby Jurassic Coast has a delightful mix of charming fishing villages and Regency seaside towns.

Nearby Lyme Regis with its family-friendly beach and famous Cobb Harbour, is a great day out.

Explore the Lyme Regis Museum and learn about the area's rich fossil-hunting history before trying to find your own fossils on the beach.

The popular fishing village of Beer is another great choice with its limestone cliffs and pretty beach, where it is easy to lose a few hours sitting in a deckchair watching the local fishermen hauling their catches ashore.

Bridge Cottage is a property simply bursting with character.

There are some provisos to be noted, namely the stairs, steps and low beams within, and that the gardens are not enclosed.

But if you are seeking a country cottage in this beautiful part of Devon, Bridge Cottage is the perfect location to experience this and so much more.

Please bear in mind when booking, that the property may not be suitable for the very young, or guests with mobility issues:

Both the staircases to the top floor bedrooms are narrow and fairly steep.

Throughout the cottage, there are internal steps and level changes between the rooms, and low beams and doorways , which are typical of a property of this age. Stair gates do not fit the staircases in this property, and are therefore not provided

The gardens are not enclosed and there is a stream at the bottom of the garden, so supervision of children and dog is advised

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.
