Blackbird Cottage near Appledore

Vinti was a great host.

She got in touch ahead of our arrival to ensure check in was smooth and straightforward. The cottage was very cosy and beautifully decorated. A beautiful historic space and very characterful. The kitchen had everything we needed including extra treats left for us to enjoy. The bathroom is a lovely space where we could enjoy a relaxing bath looking out onto the garden. The water pressure is great from the hand shower. The garden is gorgeous - very private with diverse mature plants and trees and we spent a huge amount of time there exploring and relaxing. This was also a highlight for our kids.

An absolutely stunning cottage with the most beautiful garden i have ever seen!

My family had the best time at blackbird cottage, including my dog. We all want to go back there already! Highly recommend.

We’ve just spent a restful 4 nights in Bramble Cottage The hamlet is quiet and we spent much of the blazing heat of the day in the shade of the beautiful trees and shrubs in the lovely garden playing games and reading, hearing not much more than a pony or two go by.

Vinti was attentive to any queries we had even though she was away. Appledore is on the doorstep and has quaint little alleys of shops, galleries and eating places. Highly recommend.

A charming cottage in a beautiful garden.

On arrival s thoughtful gift including local produce was most welcome. The cottage itself has challenges for anyone less mobile or very tall, but my wife and I fell in love with it immediately. We were blessed with good weather and found ourselves spending most of our time in the peaceful garden. All facilities you could possibly need are provided. A walk away from Appledore meant we hardly used the car during our stay.

A Special Place.

... Blackbird Cottage is a charming, authentic home in a beautiful setting. We didn't want to leave and hope to return very soon, which is a rarity for us, that says it all ! The welcome pack contains local produce and the flowers from the garden are a thoughtful touch. So quiet in the house and outside in the cottage garden......which we cherish when we go on holiday. The garden is special, I had my first go in a hammock ! Appledore Quay is a thriving little gem with a community feel and the beach at Instow is a must for dog walkers. Lovely quirky Devon cottage dating back many centuries, comfortably refurbished and in a quiet location.

Lovely large secluded garden to explore. Thick walls were a godsend in the recent heat wave and only a couple of downers: shower over bath only suitable for children as little headroom, and stairs so steep and a couple of steep steps between lounge and kitchen mean only really suitable for fully able bodied guests.

This was our second stay here and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

The cottage is quirky and comfortable and fully equipped with everything needed for a relaxing stay in this beautiful part of Devon. We took a short walk to Appledore for a delicious Hocking’s ice cream and had a lovely stroll around Northam Burrows Country Park but it was also a delight just to sit in the beautiful cottage garden and admire the flowers! Special thanks to Vinti for the lovely welcome basket and the fresh flowers that made this cottage a real home from home. We’re planning our third visit already!

Lovely serene cottage with easy walk to Appledore.

Great outside space for relaxing, after a day at Westward Ho beach. Host friendly, approachable and quick to respond to any questions.

This is such a lovely cosy cottage.

From the interesting art on the walls to the huge selection of books to the tasty welcome basket on our arrival, everything was thought about. The garden is beautiful and there is lots of space for your fury friend to explore. There are loads of walks to be had in the local area and Appledore is definitely worth a visit. Vinti was a super host had thought about all the details to make our stay a great one. We’ll definitely be back.

Staircase very dark with deep steps so difficult for small children,also stair edges difficult to see when descending--would suggest making stair edges much more visible.

Small fridge unsuitable, especially if more than 2 people staying-- a fridge freezer would be appreciably more useful. Clothing hanging spaces also need to be improved--adequate for 2 but not for a family of four.Overall we were disappointed.

Very clean , characterful property with an absolutely stunning garden.

The property is attached to the main house but you are given complete privacy by the owners. Vinti is a lovely host and obviously takes great pride in Blackbird cottage. Stairs in the property maybe a bit tricky for any elderly holiday makers. The property would benefit from a full length mirror and a few extra hangers but the only real issue for us was that the property details state that there is an “over shower “ and that you can “unwind with a hot shower” . The shower is a hand held shower not an over shower so not ideal. Generally though a beautiful place in a great location and we had a lovely time. Northam Burrows country park is a must for any dog owners

Lovely Stay What a fabulous spot — tucked away down a quiet country lane, yet still within walking distance of all the amenities and pubs in Appledore.

We highly recommend The George for Sunday lunch and The Seagate for a meal anytime. Treat yourself to some oysters (or fresh crab or a seafood platter) from The Devon and Cornwall Fish Company, and enjoy them in Blackbird Cottage’s magnificent and spacious garden. It really is a beautiful space. Vinti, the owner, is incredibly attentive and responsive to any questions or queries. The welcome basket of goodies on arrival was a wonderful touch. The cottage itself is super cosy, and we’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for rest, recuperation, and plenty of coastal walks. Shame about the cream (not the jam) going on first on scones in the local eateries — but you can’t have everything, I suppose!

The garden was brilliant, but in writing it said enclosed garden but the house file said not fully enclosed.

Recommend keeping dog on leash. We would not have booked knowing this. Property very basic. Freezer section of small fridge unusable as it was iced up. Vacuum cleaner unusable as not charged up with only very small brush available to use instead

I stayed at Blackbird Cottage for the second time as I found it such a beautiful tranquil setting the first time.

I would definitely recommend this cottage for the location being in a quiet country lane whilst being easy to access the surrounding area by car or walking. The homely touches provided by the owner such as little vases of flowers from the amazing garden, the welcome basket with drinks and fresh bread, the space and privacy of having the whole garden to relax in and enjoy is rare in a holiday cottage. The owner is friendly and welcoming from the start. Can't wait to return !

This cottage is no good for people of a certain age.

We stayed for one night.

We had a lovely holiday in this characterful cottage with a beautiful garden.

The owners were there to greet us and they provided a great basket of goodies as an extra special welcome. The cottage was in a perfect location for us, we enjoyed the walks to nearby Appledore and Westward Ho! and caught a bus to Bideford on the one wet morning. The A39 was close enough to allow easy trips to Clovelly and further afield, as we explored the SW coastal path. The garden was a oasis of peace when we returned in the afternoons. We would highly recommend this property, but would warn those who are tall that they will need to duck through the doorways!

We enjoyed staying here very much.

The garden is large and great to relax and play in (hammock a great hit), and the cottage itself very comfortable. The welcome pack (milk, bread, OJ, wine etc) was generous in quantity and quality, and the actual welcome from the owner when we arrived was warm and friendly. The location feels beautifully remote and secluded but in reality is only a short walk from Appledore. Only comment almost too trivial to mention: we could have done with one more bedside lamp.

We had the most wonderful break away.

We adore Blackbird Cottage and the garden is just superb. Great location for walks with such changing landscapes - we highly recommend this place. A couple of thoughts for possible improvements…As we are family of four (almost adults) it would have been good to have had more available comfortable seating in the living room (the sofa cushions slope off the end so we could only seat two of us on the existing sofa. Also a long mirror somewhere would be nice (our teenage daughter mentioned this!) Thank you for a lovely basket of goodies on arrival too ☺️

We had a wonderful mini break at Blackbird Cottage and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a cosy, comfortable base to explore the beautiful North Devon countryside and coast.

The welcome basket and well-equipped kitchen were a lovely touch and very much appreciated. We were blessed with good weather and the garden was such a lovely spot to sit in and relax. Thank you to our lovely host Vinti who made sure we had everything we could need. We will be back!

Vinti showed us to the cottage and it was so peaceful and quiet with a great garden. I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking to relax and walk in the countryside and to the coast areas.

The Host was delightful and very helpful. We would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone visiting this part of the West Country. Perfect setting in a quite back waters yet close to facilities and walking distance to Northam Burrows and Appledore. We had a super week of brilliant weather too. Very pleased. Rose & David.

A delightful cottage.

We enjoyed our stay very much. Vitti was very attentive and we appreciated the welcome hamper. Parking was the biggest problem mostly due to the narrow lane. Attractive garden.

Our stay at Blackbird Cottage was idyllic.

It's a gorgeous property in a great location, and the gardens are outstanding. Lovely walks, for us and the dog, from the cottage, and plenty of places to visit nearby. Vinti was friendly and very helpful. She made our stay even more enjoyable with lovely treats and great quality fixtures and fittings. Make sure you visit the Devon&Cornwall fish depot just down the road too!

Blackbird Cottage was exactly as described and more.

The moment you enter the wooden gate into the delightful garden, you will be transported to a relaxing beautiful quiet environment for a welcome break. The welcome basket was much appreciated and the little touches like garden flowers in vases made me feel very at home. The cottage was very comfortable and an easy walk to Appledore or Northam. Thankyou Vimti for the stay in your wonderful setting, Will definitely be returning next year !

Blackbird Cottage is a real delight.

We stayed with our two girls (7 & 10) and the cottage was all we hoped it would be. Full of rustic character and charm. The location is fabulous, not far from Appledore and the garden that encloses the cottage is beautiful and felt very peaceful and quiet. Vinti was a lovely host and very helpful during our stay. We felt spoilt with the local bread, wine and breakfast items - thank you. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Vinti was lovely, she made sure we had everything we needed and left a fabulous hamper of goodies for our arrival. The cottage is like something out of a novel - it has amazing character and is filled with books and interesting nooks and crannies. In between showers I spent some time sitting in the hammock in the garden sketching the cottage and it was a lovely way to pass some time. Appledore is just up the road, a very pretty town with some cute little shops and galleries. Johns deli/cafe has unbelievable pasties, brownies and croissants. It's a good thing I was only visiting as I'd be the size of a house if I lived anywhere nearby!

Lovely location for walks and visiting the wonderful town of Appledore by the water’s edge. Great walks to Bideford and to Westward Ho! right from the door. Enjoyed a weekend break at Blackbird cottage.

Beautiful old cottage with the most amazing large garden our dog loved it here. A hidden Gem. Perfect for a couple with dogs as easy access to coastal path walking to Appledore. And Northam burrows. We visited appledore, Instow beach and the beautiful village of Clovelly Nice basket of bread wine milk and fruit juice and treats for the dog was appreciated

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Blackbird Cottage Vinti was a very welcoming host .

The cottage was very quiet with a beautiful private garden . It was well equipped & very comfortable . Lots of interesting books about the area which we found very helpful. We took a boat out to Lundy Island & cycled from Bideford to Torrington on the Tarka trail . Location of the cottage excellent for beaches & coastal walks . Jeanette & Peter

Lovely comfortable cottage with a great garden. Owner greeted us on arrival and was lovely. Cottage had everything we needed and more and we were really grateful for our lovely welcome basket. Perfect place to stay for exploring Devon.

A delightful and quaint cottage in a quiet area.

Lovely comfy beds with patchwork bedspreads. Pretty enclosed garden with garden furniture. Car parking just around the corner. The owner put the heating on straight away when I mentioned I was chilly and she contacted me to check all was well. A super welcome basket was awaiting me in the compact kitchen which has all you need, although I suggested a casserole dish with lid would be useful and the owner thanked me for my suggestion. I would return here.
