    “The perfect off season break”
We chose this cottage from an internet search and were not disappointed. We chose this cottage from an internet search and were not disappointed. Our party were four adults, one toddler and a well behaved spaniel and the facilities at the cottage catered for our needs perfectly. The Cottage itself was warm, dry full of character and extremely comfortable. You will find the beds very comfortable. It had all of the facilities you could want and a well equipped communal utility room in support. Good facilities for dogs with an enclosed exercise field and dirty boots with a boot box by the door. You wont have much chance of getting a phone signal here but there is a red phone box next to the utility room for calling out and you can leave the owners number for urgent messages. There is also a free WIFI in all cottages. The cottage is set with several others others on a 37 acre property which guests can access at will. There are various configurations of cottages and the feel is of a tiny self contained fishing village. Very charming in all respects. There are headlands, farm walks, coastal paths and the jewel in the crown being its own private cove and gardens. The owners provide an animal feeding session once a day, where chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, goats and alpacas can be hand fed by the guests and their children. We were welcomed on our arrival by the chatelaine , the delightful Emma and we were surprised to find a complimentary Devon cream tea with home made scones and clotted cream all set up for us. Its good if you are an angler as the cove at high tide can bring some nice surprises. I caught a bass of just under 7lbs. Bring a beach caster, up tide, pike or heavy carp rod and use a simple flowing trace with a one and a quarter ounce bullet weight to avoid getting snagged on the rocks. Mackerel strip caught this beauty, right in the centre of the cove. There are cleaning and freezing facilities in the utility room. There are other fishing spots to try but these are quite difficult to reach and involve a bit of rock scrabbling. Bring some gloves and grippy footwear. Even out of season there were plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants open. We recommend a stroll round the harbour area at Ilfracombe and a longer walk along the fantastic beach at Woolacombe. Bring warm and waterproof clothes and boots to get the best out of your winter stay and dont be afraid of the cold!! In short this was for us the perfect off season break and the owners are to be congratulated for getting everything absolutely right in all respects. It is obvious that they have put a lot of thought and effort into making this the perfect stay. No hesitation in recommending this or the other Cottages on site and will be returning in the near future. If I were asked to recommend improvements, my only two comments would be I would like to be able to hire an iron and ironing board to keep in the cottage and it would be great for the anglers if a path could be cut to the rocks through the cove garden (two chairs area) to give anglers a second and safer point for accessing a deep water fishing spot.

Widmouth Farm Cottages, Watermouth

Widmouth Farm Cottages is in a unique position on the stunning North Devon Coast, between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. With spectacular sea views, a private beach and 35 acres of beautiful headland to wander through, this really is a perfect setting for a holiday cottage. The owners, who live on the farm along with their sheep, goats, alpacas, pigs, chickens and ducks, provide a huge welcome to guests who just love to help at animal feeding time, walking their dog along the coast path or just relaxing on the private beach, just 500 yards from the cottages. The beach reveals a large sandy expanse at low tide when you can swim, fish or walk around to Watermouth Harbour and return on the coast path with stunning views across the bay. The cottages are beautifully presented; some have sea views and share the play area, dog exercise field, laundry facilities and picnic area where you could spend hours relaxing with some locally-sourced goodies whilst gazing at the spectacular sea views and glorious sunsets over Samson’s Bay. The cottages are a couple of miles from the unspoilt village of Berrynarbor, with a welcoming pub and village shop. Explore Watermouth Castle, the award-winning Tunnels beach and Combe Martin Wildlife Park, all of which are close to the cottages. Alternatively, visit Ilfracombe, where Damian Hirst's Verity statue rests above the picturesque harbour, and the bustling seafront has many good-quality restaurants and bars, along with small independent shops. If you can tear yourself away from the splendid setting of Widmouth Farm and its private beach, then the three mile long sandy beach at Woolacombe, which holds the England for Excellence Gold Award for best family resort and was voted the Best British Beach in the Mail On Sunday, is a short drive away. This really is a truly stunning location to spend relaxation time with your four-legged friends.
