  • "Just what we needed, total peace and quiet."

The pool was a wonderful asset to this comfortable place. The information from the owners was spot on and helped make the stay easy and comfortable.

  • "This holiday accomodation did not disappoint."

A fabulous apartment with great facilities. Everything was clean and tidy throughout. The natural light is wonderful. During our stay, we made use of the swimming pool on a daily basis. The shared garden is stunning, we saw dolphins, seals and coastal birds, we even spotted a lizard sitting on a bench! This property offers great access to the South West Coastal Path and beaches. The views on the walk to Start Point are breathtaking. A trip to Mattiscombe Sands is definitely worth it! We took swimming gear and a picnic. A 40 minute walk. We also wandered 20 minutes to The Cricket Inn at Beesands (great food and Pimms), on another day had lunch at Britannia at the Beach (with the best Seafood Platter and Fish Pie). We ventured onto Torcross, then Stokeley Farm Shop for supplies (a bit of a trek if you're not a walker). Most evening we walked 5 minutes to Hallsands Beach, to watch the swifts and skim stones. Our 2 teenage sons were in their element. Thank you to the owners for their support when needed.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We’re so delighted that you enjoyed yourselves as much as we do when we visit. Property Owner

  • "We’ve stayed in many properties in the past and 2 Garden Apartment was probably the best we’ve ever stayed in."

It was quiet, comfortable, clean and well appointed in every aspect. However, we will not return and would not recommend the property due to the remoteness of the property. When we booked the apartment we had no idea that it was so remote and difficult to access due to the very narrow lanes which were more than 5 miles from the nearest A road. Travelling backwards and forwards to the property was a nightmare and especially as the hedgerows in the lanes were overgrown and in my opinion making driving dangerous. I suppose that it was my fault for not investigating how remote the property was but I also think that Sykes should have at least mentioned it in their write up.

Thank you Sir, for your comments. I’m delighted to hear that you thought our apartment was “the best we’ve ever stayed in.” With regard to the location of Hallsands (our village such that it is), it’s remoteness is what many people actually come for. There are few places nowadays that are genuinely peaceful and free of light pollution. The location is well described in the property details (including a map), and more so in the welcome pack. The closest shop is 10 minutes away by road, and The Cricket Inn is 25-30 minute walk along the coast path for example. Sainsbury’s will deliver to the property, and Dartmouth is less than 30 minutes by road. Unfortunately, we have no control over when the hedgerows are cut, and much of Devon’s road network is the same. At this time of year the vegetation grows prolifically, and I’m sorry that this made your experience less enjoyable than it could have been. Property Owner

  • "2 Garden Apartment was the best property we have stayed in!"

It was in a lovely setting very comfortable and beautifully warm and cosy. We loved our little garden and due to time of year it was very private and quiet. Very relaxing sitting in the garden. Loved having 2 TVs, lights in the wardrobes, and heated radiators in both bathrooms.

What pleasure it is to hear that you’ve enjoyed yourselves as much as we do at our apartment. Thank you, and we hope you come again. Property Owner

  • "2, Garden Apartment is part of a former hotel situated towards the end of a 0."

9km single track road with passing places, which leads off a similar 5km single track road from Stokenham. Both roads are bounded by high hedges and negotiation in the summer, with tourist and local traffic, is challenging, such that excursions by vehicle have to be undertaken with particular care. Indeed, although we went out on most days we did not go out at all in the evenings. If one were to stay in the property without travelling out, there are excellent pool and tennis facilities but walking is confined to the coastal path, so is somewhat restricted. In truth, we would not go there again. The apartment is well maintained, and the aspect is lovely, especially in the good (for tourists!) weather we have been having (September 2022). We had a few niggles: the code we were given for entrance to the grounds was incorrect, lacking the prefix letter, while the description of the location of the entrance code at the property was unclear: it took us 30minutes, with the help of local visitors, to get inside the property when we arrived. The washbasin in the double bed room lacked a serviceable stopper and the dishwasher instructions were incomprehensible. Communication with the agent was very difficult by mobile phone (outside the property).

Thanks for your feedback Professor, you describe the location and facilities well. The property’s slight isolation add to the tranquility we find, (there are few places where you can wake up and literally not be able to hear a single sound as is the case here). Yet within a short drive you have Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth, alternatively a walk along the coast to Beesands for a pub or Fish and Chips. I’m sorry that you struggled with access, however when I spoke to you on the phone it seems you were trying to access an entirely different property. The access code does not have a prefix and was correct. I will review the arrival instructions, however, this is not an issue that has arisen before. Likewise, the instructions for all appliances are in the guest book, but I will review them too. Finally, I’m sorry the washbasin stopper was absent, but I will replace it when I visit shortly. • "We really enjoyed our stay at 2 Garden Apartment."

The apartment was bright, modern and well equipped. The Prospect House swimming pool was also fantastic and a great way to cool down after a warm day. Small touches like the Nespresso coffee machine, nice sunloungers and patio dining set add to the luxury feel. Highly recommended for anyone who is looking to explore Hallsands and The South West Coast Path. While the roads close to the property are narrow, as long as you drive at a slow and sensible speed they manageable. Salcombe is also only just over 30 minutes away and makes a great day trip.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. If you’re in the area again, you can drive to East Portlemouth and catch the ferry across to Salcombe. It’s a lovely way to arrive, and a much shorter journey than driving around the estuary. Property Owner

  • "Access road to property is very poor."

This definitely needs to be mentioned in description. Hedgerows over hanging which has resulted in so many scratches down both sides of car. This was the only downside to what was a enjoyable holiday in a lovely location.

I’m very sorry that this is your lasting impression of your holiday. The lane leading to Hallsands is a public highway and as such is out of our control. The hedgerow is regularly cut by the farmer, but in the height of summer, grows prolifically. Whilst the narrow lanes of Devon can be frustrating, they also help to preserve the tranquility of the property. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful apartment in stunning location, in genuinely peaceful surroundings."

The apartment is fairly small, but has everything you need and is very well organised and thought out, with quality furnishings and kitchen wear and very helpful hints and little touches from the owners, including a generous 'welcome pack' of goodies. Being seconds' walk from cliff top walks and the beach in such a remote location, felt a complete privilege, not to mention with free usage of the heated swimming pool and tennis court. Take binoculars to watch the seals on the rocks, roe deer on the hillside and stonechats in the bracken and peregrines in the skies.

  • "Had a lovely week staying here."

The apartment was very clean and well presented, and very well equiped. The local scenery was exceptional, and we especially enjoyed sitting on the sheltered patio looking out at the countryside. We would recommend getting your food shopping in Kingsbridge on the way as although only a few miles away, it takes a while to get anywhere due to the narrow lanes. We enjoyed some fantastic coastal walks including the 25minute walk to The Cricket Inn at Beesands where the food was excellent. The owners were also very helpful, returning two items we left behind via Royal Mail, which is above and beyond expectations. We would hope to return some time - thank you!

  • "The apartment was incredibly clean and well presented."

It’s as per description and perhaps slightly larger than we were expecting. Very homely in a great spot just back from hallsands beach. You absolutely need a car here and for nervous drivers, the country lanes can get narrow in and around hallsands and Devon. Otherwise, a lovely place to stay and has everything you need.

  • "It is a lovely apartment."

The only real negative was the availability of hot water during the day or when we wanted it. One other minor point is that the beds are not really big enough for people over 6ft tall.

Thank you for your feedback and we are glad to hear that you loved the apartment. With regard to the beds; they are respectively a standard double bed in one room and two small singles in the other, which can be zipped together, upon request, to create a kingsize. All beds are standard 6'3" length. Like most homes with a tanked water system, the hot water comes on in the morning and the evening, giving two large tanks of very hot water a day which is available between heating cycles. This has always proved sufficient before, but we will monitor other feedback. Once again sorry for any inconvenience and we hope to see you back soon. Property Owner

About the location

HALLSANDS

Start Point 1.5 miles; Beesands 3 miles; East Portlemouth 5.5 miles; Kingsbridge 8 miles.

Hallsands is a small village near Start Point, one of the most southerly points on Devon’s coastline, near Salcombe in the beautiful South Hams area. The sheltered South Hams Peninsula is in 'deepest Devon', a pastoral landscape of flowering hedgerows and ancient sunken lanes, carved into by the richly wooded Avon and Dart Valleys. This quiet fishing village, with its dog-friendly, unspoilt beach, is situated next to the historic ‘old village’ of South Hallsands, just three miles from the popular Beesands Beach which has its own gastro pub and shop. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is decorated with white, pink and ochre thatched cottages, picturesque fishing ports such as Dartmouth, and is renowned for its stunning coastline, popular with yachting enthusiasts. Much of the clifftop land has been acquired by the National Trust, a haven for bird watchers and walkers who take advantage of the South West Coast Path, peppered with perfect picnic spots. Nearby, uncover the beauty of Blackpool Sands and Torcross, a historic site where the Normandy landings were practiced; explore the nature reserve at Slapton Ley, and stroll along Slapton Beach, feeling the soft sand between your toes. Park at East Portlemouth and catch the ferry across to the beautiful seaside town of Salcombe with its renowned estuary, or visit the Start Point Lighthouse, less than a mile away. Hallsands is a wonderful base for uncovering the unspoilt beauty of Devon and the South Hams, all year round.
