  • "This is the 3rd time visiting Pillars."

It is a large very comfortable property with a huge garden, our dog loves to play in and walk the nearby public footpaths. We have loved our holidays in the area for many years and this a a great location to enjoy them in beautiful surroundings.

Our dogs absolutely loved it. The pond with the little bridge is just beautiful. I can not recommend enough. The two local pubs are superb and the owners always remember you and make you feel very welcome. Lots to do in the day and fantastic place to retreat to in the evening. If you are a national trust member there is lots to do in the area to put your membership to good use. A lovely touch was a personal phone call from the owner when we returned home to make sure we enjoyed our stay and if there was anything he could do to improve any future stays. Honestly I could think of nothing. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

Thank you for your feedback. We try hard to ensure that everyone enjoys staying at Pillars as much as we do. Property Owner

The house has everything that you would need. The garden is massive and the views are great. Please be aware that the garden is NOT secure and you'll need to keep an eye on your dog. The walks around the house are lovely and the dogs really enjoyed a swim in the stream. The beaches are really nice and you can walk for miles. All in all a really lovely place to spend a holiday. The property has everything anyone could ask for - in a lovely part of North Devon, ideally placed for visiting various beaches and places of interest. We noticed some new touches this visit, new settees in the lounge and a gorgeous garden room, which sadly, due to the weather, we only sat in once, briefly. This will be a fabulous feature for a large party during summer months - though you are not left wanting for outdoor dining either, as there are two sets of garden tables and chairs also. Such an idyllic holiday home - can’t wait to go back ☺️

Many thanks for your positive feedback. Always good to hear. Property Owner

It is comfortable and has lots of space. The cottage and gardens are lovely and the booking was all very professionally handled. I rarely go to the same place twice but I would make an exception for this. The over mirror light in the bathroom is broken but I am sure that will be sorted quickly. Book this place because you will love it.

A beautiful property which is very well equipped. The garden is outstanding and a great place for the dogs to chase the ball in, plus plenty of areas to sit. Loved the new sofas in the lounge and of course, the peace for reading kindle in the conservatory sunroom. Saunton beach is a joy…. For those able, walking down to Crows point and back is a 5.5 mile walk and those not so able, can take in the people and dog watching nearer the beach hut end and cafe. We all love it. Thanks for a the amazing welcome pack…. We regularly rent cottages up to six times a year and this was the best! Great communication too with both owner and housekeeper. We will be back!

! This place felt like home as soon as we took the first bags in. Very well laid out accommodation. Everything we needed was there. I really enjoyed the conservatory/snug a great place to relax with a book and a glass of wine with the dog at my feet. The garden was huge so even on a wet day when there was a brief respite you could get out and throw the ball for the dog. Great views and a quiet setting. Superb location, with walks right out the door and only a short drive to Saunton or Puttsbrough for a beach day. Morrisons delivered our shopping no problem and Braunton is nearby for and forgotten supplies. Overall a very comfortable and pleasant stay. We don't often go back to the same place twice as there are so many new places to explore but the Pillars may get a re-visit :)

  • "Lovely house and garden, as described but pleasantly larger than expected inside for the 4 of us."

Especially enjoyed the pavilion to sit out in the evenings - a good addition to the facilities. Welcome gifts of tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, milk, dog treats and bottle of wine were appreciated. Only slight negatives would be rather uncomfortable beds and overly-soft sofas although we understand this is personal preference. Location good: Heaton Punchardon is a small village not too far down narrow Devon lanes with an historic church and thatched houses. Pub (The Williams Arms) possibly walkable but very steep hill on the way back! Large portions :) Braunton also has essential shops, Squires chippy and there are plenty of petrol stations nearby. Barnstaple great for a day in town and its excellent local-history museum and medieval bridge. Saunton Sands very busy on a weekend and carpark rubbly. Woolacombe a good seaside location with brilliant beach and plenty of cafes (main carpark pricey at £12 so be aware). Both dog-friendly. Proper cider from Indicknowle farm towards Ilfracombe was a highlight of our stay on such a hot week. Dog had a great time too, especially the local walk (see route in info folder in property) and all the rabbits in the big garden. Overall, would recommend Pillars for a week in North Devon and would book through Helpful Holidays/Sykes again.

  • "This was not our first vacation at Pillars."

We love this property as it has a lovely large and safe garden for our dogs and for walks at Braunton. It also feels homely. However, the suite in the Lounge has been in use for many years now and has had its day! My husband and I had backache as it has lost its firmness. The tv could be bigger for the size room too. We had super weather during our week and we were out every day. We will return.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and we are pleased to hear that you are regular visitors to Pillars. The suite is designed to have firm foam seats and feather filled upright cushions . As a result the rear cushions feel soft and may not suit everyone's personal preference. The owners are pleased to report that none of the cushions have lost their original feel. We do hope you'll choose Pillars for a future holiday. Property Owner

  • "Really lovely and comfortable cottage."

Had everything we needed. We loved our stay there and thoroughly recommend. Lovely walks from there. And close to all the coastal paths and beaches. Extensive and beautiful safe garden for the dog. Thanks for the lovely treats left for us. All thoroughly enjoyed. Only negative are that recycling instructions and containers are not clear and insufficient so we ended up putting all of our recycling in the garage and probably missed the collection. Also hoover was full and did not want to break trying to open it. Finally one of the mattress in the room facing the garden really could do with replacing.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback, we are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Pillars. Sorry to hear that you felt the recycling instructions weren't clear - the local authority recycling instructions are pinned on the notice board to assist our guests. We have also checked the mattress and do not feel that it needs replacing, as you know, mattress comfort is a matter of personal preference. Property Owner

  • "Pillars is an exceptional holiday property, gorgeous House and fabulous gardens in incredible setting with views over open countryside."

All needs are catered for, from the interior fixtures and fittings, to the most comfortable beds and bedding I’ve ever found in any holiday rental. Added extras such as flowers left and the most sumptuous artisan treats left for us on arrival all made us feel incredibly welcome, including our dogs, who loved the size and safety of the vast gardens to run and play in. The information left for us said that the gardens were not dog proof, but we had no issues at all - fences all around, that only the most determined escapees would get out through - but why would they want to?? Our boys loved it. Obviously, as this was the first time away from home since lockdown, we were a little concerned, but the House was spotless and additional sanitiser left for us to use during our stay. We were reassured to be told that the property had been fully sanitised before our stay, and we duly scanned in using the NHS track and trace app. We had originally booked to stay in April but had to postpone to the end of September- and we were so glad we were able to rebook Pillars with no problems at all. Vicky, the caretaker, was lovely upon first contact, and was so helpful when we wanted to take some of the delicious treats back for friends

  • "Amazing space in the garden (we kept finding hidden areas) and inside, great for everyone to have some me time."

The large garden meant ball games, golf lessons, dog exercising could still happen when it was too hot to head to the beach or down the hill on one of the many footpaths across the fields. None feather bedding would have been a major plus. I applaud the solar energy to heat water, but it meant only a quick shower once a day if the four of us were to have one, not great in the hot weather to wash off sun cream and days at the beach. Croyde is an amazing beach for body boarding and surfing. Parking at Sandy Lane and walking across Braunton Burrows onto Saunton Sands to watch the sunset is another hi light with fun races up the large dune.

We made use of all the downstairs rooms especially the conservatory ( weather wasn’t always good!). The Williams Arms provided exceptional value and quality food - we recommend it. The location is good for numerous points of interest - beaches, NT, small towns. The instructions to reach the property were accurate but not the easiest route to follow - we discovered better during our time there. It was difficult to contact the caretaker to find out the details about key collection (5 messages were left before a callback was received). Unfortunately there was a problem with the cistern in the ensuite - it was very slow to fill - which we reported but didn’t hear back. Also, the skylight window in one of the twin bedrooms couldn’t be fully closed. We felt the ‘Heath Robinson’ arrangement for the extremely small television in the lounge spoilt the room and wasn’t a suitable size for that room. Although there were negatives we did enjoy our stay.

The property

In a quiet cul de sac in Heanton Punchardon is this roomy detached house.

With long views over surrounding countryside, it is a handsome family home in a good position for touring the area.

From the hall, head through to the sitting room, all comfy and good quality with beams, a living flame gas fire and doors which slide open on a fine day to the patio.

The big conservatory provides another seating area.

The spacious country style kitchen is a good place for preparing meals from delicious local Devon produce, to be enjoyed either at the kitchen table or in the dining room with its door to a little landscaped courtyard.

The stairs lead you up to the three bedrooms, one with an en suite.

The good sized garden is laid out at the back with a choice of patio areas, including an enclosed patio with a small bridge over an unfenced pond.

At the front, open shrub/flower borders and wide driveway; at the back, about ½ acre of well kept, mostly lawned garden with patio areas (tables/chairs, barbecue), approached from an enclosed patio over a little bridge spanning an ornamental pond (unfenced).

All 4 separate patio areas are not overlooked and are private.

Covered circular garden pavilion with seating for 8 people.

An excellent space for outdoor eating or relaxing with circular table and cushioned benches.

You will find a gorgeous sand surf beach at nearby Saunton, where you can spend the day catching the rollers with bodyboard or surfboard, building sandcastles or dozing in the sun.

Within eight miles you have a fabulous choice of other huge golden beaches at Croyde, Woolacombe and Putsborough.

When you tire of the sand between your toes, head to the heather hills of the Exmoor National Park with its pretty villages and friendly old pubs.

With stunning coast and moorland within such easy reach, Pillars truly is an exceptional place for a smashing Devon holiday.
