• "Well where do I start?"

  The site area is not well maintained, there are pine needles all over the floor which made it untidy, slippery and even taking our shoes off at the chalet door it was impossible not to bring them in with us. There are some signs to denote which chalets areas were which except for ours so we had to hunt around to find where the Manorcombe chalets were. Shop- is a very very basic shop which is more of a tuck shop with small scale snacks and very limited necessities. Pool- looks ok at first glance, the tiles look nice but the once white edges are turning green and the ceiling tiles are either stained or damaged. There was a big mass of fluff and hair in the pool when we arrived which we had to fish out with a net which was on the wall. The changing rooms smelt awful and the floors were soaking wet after just a hour of being open making it difficult to get dry and dressed. There are just a few wet benches at the pool edge to put your belongings on while you are in the pool. The pub- people would take up the parking spaces for that chalet area to go to the pub which made it difficult for us to find a space. The pub advertised as having a carvery on a Sunday with takeout options but it was advised to pre-book it. It had posted on Facebook 20 hours previously its weekly menu which included a Sunday carvery so we planned a day out and would call to book when it opened at 12. We did so but when we phoned we were told that there was no carvery that day and that it was a limited menu only of pizza and sides. This left us frantically scrambling to sort out an evening meal during our day out which proved very difficult. The chalet: Outside- the pine needles were all over the floor, the picnic bench outside was broken and rickety, there were broken solar powered lights just sat on the grass for no apparent reason. There were weeds and brambles on the floor and ivy climbing over the outside walls. It shouldn’t be described as a private patio when it’s next to the road where everyone walks past to get to the pub. It should also say it’s close to the facilities and it gets noisy, especially when there is an event at the pub or outside it. Kitchen- it was not well stocked as advertised. It had plenty of unnecessary gadgets like an electric egg boiling machine but not the basic necessities like an oven tray and only had a tiny little sieve. We had to swap between using the grill and the oven due to only having the one grill pan. This meant we couldn’t enjoy a meal together as it had to be made in stages. Other utensils which were there were dirty, both the small frying pans and both saucepans had to be washed before using, the large frying pan was warped thus rendering it unusable. The cheese grater was so dirty I could not clean it despite buying and using a scourer plus using the edge of a knife to try and get the bits off it. The welcome basket shown in the advert didn’t exist, there was a little rectangular wicker basket with some paper straw and two old marmalade sachets in it. The oven control panel looked like it had rusted and been painted over with what was once white paint, it looked very shabby and the oven door was dirty. One side of the toaster didn’t work at all. The Lino on the floor had been ripped and glued down. The washing machine left black dirty mould marks on the site’s tea towel which we washed to test it so we didn’t dare use that for our clothes. Living room- the walls had marks on them, the electric socket just behind the edge of the sofa was broken on one side which isn’t safe. The socket for the electric fire sparks when you turn it off. The flowers on the table were already dying so had to bin them as they were making a mess with petals falling off. There was a big hole in the carpet which was near the corner of the sofa by the front door. Cupboard- the hoover did not work so we had to keep sweeping the carpet with a broom. There was no brush to go with the dustpan. The games were not usable as there wasn’t enough pieces for chess, no dice for snakes and ladders etc. The hallway carpet was lose and tripped us up a few times. Bedrooms- the beds were really uncomfy, we had to stack both twin mattresses on top of each other so you couldn’t feel the slats underneath. None of the bedroom heaters worked so we had to keep swapping the electric fire between the living room and the hallway. The bedding in the king size room had a yellow stain on it and the ceilings had damp stains on them. Bathrooms- the walk in shower room had old shaving hairs all down between the shower and the sink. It should be said in the advert that it is a very small room and a very tight fit so not suitable for anybody with mobility problems as we discovered. The toilet brush was unusable as it was snapped off its handle. The bath/shower room leaked badly. There isn’t a proper seal on the shower screen and it leaks down the bath and all over the floor into a big puddle. The bath panel wasn’t fitted properly and was broken. The toilet brush holder was half full of yellow dirty water. There was no ventilation fan in the room and the shower would turn itself cold if anyone flushed a toilet or turned on a tap. It would have to be turned off and then on again to make it go warm. The toilet roll holder was located behind you when using the toilet and would hold the paper so tight that it wouldn’t roll for you to pull some off. This chalet gave us a roof over our heads and we only just managed to cope for the week but it wasn’t a pleasant experience and I wouldn’t say it was the standard expected for £1000. It should be stated that this chalet is not suitable for people with mobility problems due to the walk from the parking to the chalet door, the bins being up a hill behind the chalet, and the inability to shower as the walk in shower is in such a tiny room. It looks tired and worn and needs renovations and safety measures need addressing like the broken and sparking electric sockets. Once bought up to standard this has the potential to be a nice little chalet providing you don’t mind the noise from the pub or people walking past, don’t have any mobility issues and have transport to get to a decent shop for supplies.
