  • "We enjoyed our stay, we had really good weather and it was a beautiful area."

As others have said it’s quite small so best suited to a family rather than 4 adults but it included everything we needed. There were 4 dogs from one of the properties using the communal area out the front while we were there which made it a bit tricky for us to have the door open with our dog, which we would have liked in the hot weather, but apart from that we had a great stay.

  • "It was fine for a couple but may be a bit tight for 4 people due to layout - bathroom off of kitchen area squeezing past table where people eat."

Clearer labelling of what switch controlled what. More info in property folder - missed sign for water heater so took a while to find it.

Thank you for your feedback. Information regarding the water heater , shower & towel rail is displayed in kitchen area but I will also add details to to property folder. Jan Property Owner

  • "Lovely clean accommodation."

Thought had gone into items which may be needed such as torches, picnic chairs & wind break. It took us a while to find the laundry room which is located in a shed away from the properties. Also the bins and only finding them we were able to see if they took re-cycled items so we could separate. This information would have been helpful in the notes. The information in the folder is general and not specifically for Thornlea Mews. The welcome pack was appreciated with a small amount of cleaning goods in one box. Tea, coffee, etc in the other which I had read on one of the reviews but as it wasn’t in the description, I did take my own. The grounds were ideal to exercise our dog and having parking was also a bonus.

Thank you so much for your feedback . I will ensure that information regarding location of the laundry room & recycling bins is included in the folder. I'm glad you liked the accommodation & enjoyed the grounds & I do hope you return to 4 Thornlea Mews .... Jan - owner Property Owner

  • "Four of us, two adults, two teens and our four-legged friend had a wonderful week at 4 Thornlea Mews in August."

It’s a lovely holiday home with everything you could need, there were even a couple of camping chairs and a windbreak. The property is clean and light and the décor beachy and charming. There are great views from one of the bedrooms and the huge surrounding grassed area which is a perfect place to walk the dog, chill out or have a picnic or barbeque. Being so close to the beach was wonderful too. We booked last minute, and Sykes Cottages and the owner were so helpful in getting everything ready for us. Such a nice touch to have the welcome pack with those little essentials you may not have bought yet, especially the coffee, teabags and sachets of milk. Only addition I would think of is a little ‘mind your head’ sign for when coming down the stairs for taller people. We loved this place and Hope Cove and would definitely come back.

A short walk to the town. Really suited our family with two teens. Very clean and well provided for. Very comfortable beds and sofas. Hope cove beach is stunning and walks to others is easy enough. Very dog friendly so the shared green space was ideal.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. Hope Cove is a very special place. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay at 4 Thornlea Mews & I hope you will return. Jan Property Owner

  • "Not sure if I would have booked this cottage if I had seen the setting first!"

! It is advertised for 4 people, but only really suitable if 2 of them were small children, 4 adults would be far too cramped. The walls are very thin and next door could be heard going up and down stairs, showering, running water etc. Having said that, the cottage was clean and reasonably well equipped, even beach chairs and wind break provided. It would have been nice if there was a bit more local information, places to eat, visit etc, a visitors book is always handy for that sort of thing. Hope Cove and the surrounding area is beautiful, lots of fantastic beaches and walks.

Thank you for your feedback . I'm glad you found the cottage clean & well equipped . There is an information pack in the cottage detailing local activities & how to download a free app for tourist information. Property Owner

  • "We have used Sykes cottages many times before and this was the first time we have had cause for complaint."

First impressions of the cleanliness of the cottage were good but we soon realised it had not been cleaned properly and there was a lot of dog hairs. Underneath the furniture had not been cleaned and we also found a used tissue under one of the sofas. There was a lot of dust and hairs underneath them and this could have easily cleaned by just pulling the sofa out. Also when we lifted the rug we found that the floor around it wasn’t as clean as underneath it. We realised that my husband was having a reaction to the pet hairs as he kept getting a tickley cough whenever we were in the property and especially at night, which even though he has never had any reaction to pets before it has totally disappeared since we have been home. The cooker instructions were a bit confusing and the grill came on with the oven and burnt the outside while the inside was still raw, hence we didn’t cook in the property. An iron was provided but no ironing board. Previous properties we have stayed in with Sykes have been let by the owners but this one we noticed was looked after by a letting company so you didn’t get the personal touches to the stay and it will definitely be something I make sure of next time.

Thank you for your feedback on your recent holiday. I’m sorry to hear that there were some cleanliness issues on your arrival, we would have welcomed the opportunity to address these during your stay if we had been aware of these; but your comments have been passed onto the cleaner for their attention. We haven’t had any other comments on the instructions for the oven but these will be checked to ensure they are clear for future guests. We hope you still enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you back to the area in the future. Coast & Country Cottages on behalf of Property Owner

  • "Four adults and one choc labrador shared the place."

It was small but adequate and clean. We managed to make dinner and eat round the dining table each night. The Cove post office was fab, easy access to walks, lovely space for the dog to run around and good parking.

  • "We love Hope Cove and have visited every year for the past 10 years."

Our experience with your company was excellent and we can’t fault that however, Whilst the property was in a great location it isn’t really suitable for more than two people. We came as a three with our dog and struggled with the space. For example, We had to store all our beach stuff outside (thank goodness it was sunny), other items in our car, and it was impossible to find space to extend the dining table - it’s almost pointless having it there taking up much needed space. We also had issues with parking and quite often we didn’t manage to get a space which was very frustrating as it meant we had to pay additional costs to park in the town car park when the property is advertised with car parking. The shower also didn’t drain - we bought sink unblocker - there was an old hot cross bun in the cupboard on arrival and we generally felt the pictures used to advertise the property were misleading. When we return to Hope Cove in the future we would not book Thornlea Mews again and would not recommend it to anyone travelling in a party bigger than a couple.

  • "The accommodation is in a very good location a short walk from the beach and is well equipped."

However the actual living area was smaller than expected and it would be better described as an apartment/maisonette rather than a mid terraced cottage. The double bed was also very uncomfortable - although several mattress covers have been used to remedy this they don’t work. A comfortable mattress doesn’t cost a huge amount and would be a worthwhile addition. The shared garden was lovely but the courtyard seating area immediately outside the front door was scruffy and needs to be improved. It could be such a nice space with some TLC!

  • "The property was small and noisy ( you could hear the neighbour snoring) ."

The property can sleep 4 but the living accommodation was sadly lacking barley large enough for my daughter and I yet alone two other people. Shower room was the biggest (comparably) and best room. No washing machine??? Beds were comfortable and linen clean and fresh, rooms light and bright. Windows terrible- we experienced a bad windy storm and the windows shook and rattled all night . Furniture dated and very very basic. Cobwebs and spider in the main room under the sink . Parking - on three occasions over 10 days I was unable to park due to all spaces occupied!!! Even though one space per property. Location great for beach etc. But for the price I paid ( booked in March) I was extremely disappointed in what I was presented with , the approach to the property from the car park is very ugly - a grey concrete jungle that desperately needs a face lift .

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay at 4 Thornlea Mews. We were disappointed to read of the issue with the windows rattling due to the storm, the owner has informed us that this has now been rectified. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer in the communal laundry room that all guests of Thornlea Mews can use, we apologise if this information was not clearly presented at the property. We are glad that you loved the location, you really can’t beat it and we hope you visit the area again soon. The owner relations team, on behalf of Property Owner

  • "To start with, directions were sketchy and the place was badly signed from the road, and could only be seen coming from the opposite direction."

It was trying after a long drive. The cottage was comfortable but space was very limited. There was no room for a dog bed, and nowhere to stow our suitcases except on the spare beds. The facilities were pretty OK. Not so keen on the bathroom being just a sliding door away from the kitchen, not sure if that is legal, but shower was good. There was no room to do things like drawing, jigsaw puzzles etc for when it was raining, which happened a lot during the week we were away, NOT your fault! Furniture and beds were comfortable and the electric heating worked well, but some of the decor was 'tired'. The walls to the neighbouring cottages were thin so a bit noisy at times. Outside space for the dog was excellent. In the end we came home a day early because the cottage was so cramped and there was no room for pastimes to occupy us when it was raining, also no phone signal was a big disadvantage when my husband needed to be contacted by his Clinical Nurse Specialist during treatment for cancer and the builder working on our house while we were away could not contact us. Neither could we contact them unless we drove out of the village and the whole point of this particular holiday was to relax and not have to go anywhere much while we were there. All in all, the holiday did not meet our expectations of a relaxing week by the sea, exacerabated of course by Covid restrictions so we couldn't go out for a meal, but that also is NOT your fault.

Many thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately Hope cove, like many coastal villages does have limited mobile signal, however the property does offer free WiFi, which can be used to access WiFi calling should you need to make or receive calls. We have reviewed your points regarding the size of the property and feel the photos on our website are representative of the property and its size. We are sorry to hear that you found it difficult to find the property, especially after a long journey; we have reviewed our travel directions and will make some amendments to make the location clearer. Please note that as long as there is a door between the kitchen and the bathroom, and that there is a basin in between that door and the pan, then bathrooms located off the kitchen are permitted. We’re glad to hear that you found the property comfortable and that your dog enjoyed the outside space. Property Owner

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
