"Great property, well presented, really comfortable beds, beautiful beach, ..."
Great property, well presented, really comfortable beds, beautiful beach, fabulous beach cafe, no on site shop, Looe is approx 4 miles away should you need groceries etc, however we searched for limited mobility properties and although this is a bungalow/chalet style property it has 26 very steep steps leading up to it and the first 6-8 steps had no hand rail to help climb the steps this made it quite dangerous for my step
dad, would recommend but read the small print if you have any mobility issues
Thank you so much for your lovely comments and recommendation. We’re really pleased you found Shells Cottage well presented, enjoyed the comfortable beds and had the opportunity to experience the beautiful beach and Beach Café.
We really appreciate your comments regarding access to the property. Although the hillside location and steps are detailed within the property information, we completely understand your concerns, particularly when travelling with someone with limited mobility.
The external steps and handrails form part of the wider Millendreath site rather than our individual property, so unfortunately we cannot make alterations ourselves. However, we will be raising your comments with Site Services, specifically regarding the lack of a handrail on the first section of steps and the importance of safe access for everyone.
We will also review our property information to see whether we can make the access arrangements even clearer for guests before booking.
Thank you again for staying with us. We’re delighted you enjoyed Shells Cottage overall and would recommend it, and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

"Not worth all of the inconvenience for the price paid."
Next door is a permanent resident who has a dog that barked throughout the holiday.
The beds are of poor quality, so we slept on the sofa.
The ceiling is very thin and you can hear banging from people above constantly.
Parking is at the bottom of a very steep hill and requires an additional charge.
There is absolutely no signal at the property.
On top of all of this, we returned home at 1am to find that the electricity had run out. The shop was closed, there was nobody to contact, and the meter is very hidden with no clear instructions on where it is located. As a result, we had to throw away a fridge full of spoiled food and had no electricity until the morning.
Overall, the property was not good value for money.
Thank you for your feedback. We are disappointed to read your review and feel it is important to provide some context for future guests, particularly as several of the points raised are stated in the property description and information provided before a stay.
Shells Cottage has been part of our family for many years and holds great sentimental value to us. We are relatively new to managing the property as a holiday let.
The parking arrangements, including the location and charge, are disclosed within the property information. Limited mobile reception is also specifically stated in the property description.
The cottage operates using a prepayment electricity meter. The electricity did not fail because of a fault with the property; the credit on the meter ran out. Information regarding the electricity arrangements and topping up is provided to guests, there is a sign on the door clearly identifying where the electricity meter is located. We appreciate that running out of electricity during the night would be frustrating, but this is why we provide information to help guests manage their electricity throughout their stay.
We personally attended the property, dismantled the bed, waxed the frame and checked it in an effort to resolve this issue.
Although a privately occupied neighbouring property is outside our control, we spoke directly with our neighbour and even spent time supporting them with puppy training, including using our own dog while we were staying at the cottage.
We will always listen when something can be improved. However, we also feel it is important that future guests understand that some of the issues presented in this review were disclosed as part of the property information.
Shells Cottage is much more than a holiday let to us. It is a place filled with family memories, we are committed to looking after it, continually improving it and sharing it with guests who can hopefully make their own happy memories here too.

"We stayed here for a week for our 1st wedding anniversary and it was ok for somewhere to sleep, but it was supposed to be no smoking, yet the people in the villa next door were constantly going out on their balcony and smoking and the smell would come in where we had the door open for some fresh air as it was extremely hot and the villa had no air conditioning."
The people next door also had a dog, that would constantly be out on their terrace barking every time we were out there, then the people would start arguing. This is not how we wanted to spend our 1st wedding anniversary and felt that we could not sit out in the terrace and enjoy a relaxing time. I think we only managed to sit out there once during the entire week.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re really sorry to hear that your stay wasn’t as relaxing as you had hoped, particularly as you were celebrating your first wedding anniversary.
We completely understand how frustrating it must have been to experience cigarette smoke, noise and a barking dog from the neighbouring property when you were trying to enjoy the terrace. Although these circumstances were unfortunately outside of our control, we’re genuinely sorry that they impacted your enjoyment of your holiday.
We do appreciate your comments regarding the heat in the villa too. The unusually warm weather can make the villas very hot, and this is something we will continue to consider when looking at ways we can improve our guests’ comfort.
Thank you also for giving us 100% for the accuracy of our listing. We’re disappointed that your overall experience wasn’t what you had hoped for, but we really appreciate you sharing your experience and hope you still managed to make some lovely memories together during your anniversary week.

"The accommodation had problems which had been brought to the attention of the owner in the past but had not been fixed."
These were very squeaky bed in main room, very very poor drainage from both sinks and no hot water in either sink. When brought to the attention of the owner on our return home, we didn't even receive the courtesy of a reply.
We abandoned our holiday early as the information on the Sykes website about access out of the Millendreath Resort was incorrect. It was described as a gentle stroll to get to the neighbouring beach but in order to leave the site at all on foot, there was a strenuous climb up 123 steps and then to get anywhere further, quite a lengthy walk.
As I have had a knee injury in the last 2-3 months, I couldn't do this climb every day and therefore we were trapped in the Millendreath Resort where there is no shop even to buy a newspaper (although the website says there is one).
We are sorry to hear that you found your time away distressing. The bed and draining had been addressed since it was raised in April, since then having three bookings stay before your arrival who did not bring this to our attention, assuming because they had been resolved. Had you made us aware of any issues whilst at the property, our management team would have come to resolve these. We were only made aware of your issues upon your return. Complaints go through to management and Sykes, not directly to us as owners. However when receiving your complaint we worked with Sykes on how best to resolve it. Considering the bulk of your complaint was about a nearby shop and the walk, this beyond our control and therefore your requests for a full refund was not granted. Information about the property and nearby shops are in the property literature. The closest shop being in the caravan park next door which is a close distance. I will ask Sykes to clarify this in the description and our management team to clarify in property literature. As this property has been in our family for a considerable amount of time, it holds sentiment and value to us. We are in our second year of holiday letting, and all feedback from guests is important to us to ensure that all who visit create memories just as we have as a family. We are deeply disappointed that you did not have this experience and we will take on your feedback. Sending my best wishes.

"The property is in a lovely location next to the beach and a 30 minute walk along the coastal path to Looe."
It was good for a short stay. The property was well equipped and there was a lovely welcome pack of cookies and crisps, thank you.
Just a few things to note:
- The stairs in December/January were very very slippy and icey in the morning before the sun got on them - not the property owner’s fault but the holiday park it is situated in could do with making this a lot safer.
- We were not aware electricity wasn’t included once a small initial bit ran out. That information was not included by Sykes when booking and was only in small print in the drop down amenities section after booking, which we admittedly didn’t read all of. We nearly had a very sticky situation when electricity ran out on New Years Eve and it was -2 degrees. Thankfully, we discovered from a neighbour that we needed a card and made an open shop with 5 minutes to spare. In the meantime the owner was also responsive and did get someone to pop round with a card (although we sorted ourselves in the end). Thank you to the owner for trying to help. Sykes - this needs to be very clear when booking and when entering the property to avoid any situations in winter!
Thank you for your feedback Mrs Salt and for acknowledging the efforts made to resolve the issue with electric. I can confirm this has been raised with Sykes and we ensure this is made clear when guests are due to arrive.
Feedback will be sent to site services regarding your feedback on the steps. We do hope to welcome you back in the future.

"Spent a lovely long weekend in 49 Hillside Villa."
First impression were the steps leading up to Villa, require more hand rails and lighting is very poor when dark so you can’t see where you are going, and outside lighting for the Villa is non-existent.. Furniture in Villa requires cleaning or upgrading - not very nice. Beds could do with upgrading duvets and pillows. Toaster - no toast rack. Upgrade cutlery. Other than that we will definitely be re- booking for next year as the location is lovely. Shame you have to go out in the car as there are No shops on site. Caddy Shack shut. Beach Shack open but not for goods or newspapers which is a shame.
Thank you for your feedback. We will be feeding back to site services regarding hand rails. We are pleased to hear you like the location and will be returning to Shells. We have contacted our electrician regarding the lighting out the front as these are (or should be sensored). We have upgraded parts of the villa adding new cladding to the front and aim to upgrade the sofa in due course. We hope to welcome you back in the future.

Thank you for leaving a review and sharing your concerns. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
