This has to be one of the best holiday properties we have experienced, an excellent stay.

  • "We had a wonderful time at Galanda staying right on the bank of the river yealm."

It is a beautiful and peaceful place and fantastic for those with interests revolving around the river. We spent time paddle boarding, crabbing, fishing (unsuccessfully!!), open water swimming and wildlife spotting. All of this was available with a 2 minute walk down to the private jetty. The house was perfect for us. we had 4 kids with us and still felt like we had plenty of space, everything we needed during our stay was available. We loved the wider area too. The 3 pubs in Newton Ferrers / Noss Mayo are welcoming and provide quality food and drink. There are causeways which link across the estuaries in the villages at low tide, but take care as the tide comes in very quickly. The local beaches are beautiful, we visited Mothercome Bay which was a brilliant for rock pooling and the usual beach pursuits. A wonderful holiday had by all of us, the host Sara was helpful and friendly and gave good advice on things to do locally. We plan to return to this hidden gem in the future when we can.

  • "A comfortable and spacious villa, with fabulous views of the Yealm, well equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay."

The host Sara was extremely helpful. The pubs were an easy paddle away in our kayaks which you can launch close to the property, or by walking across the vos (causeway) when the tide is out, and it was lovely to walk along the riverside footpath to the local shops. Hope to be back next year.

  • "Lovely accommodation, pretty much as described."

The living / dining / kitchen area is nice and spacious - although if you were a large group you might be a bit squished as there are two 3 seater sofas. The balcony is great, just room for 4 people to sit though, and does overlook the downstairs terrace. We were told the terrace at the front is shared, but we didn't really want to use it as the downstairs flat use it as their only outside space, and their patio door overlooks it a lot. There's a much more private space at the back, however without the lovely view of the river. Inside the kitchen is well equipped, you'll need to bring your own kitchen roll, condiments, washing power/liquid etc, but there are dishwasher tablets, tinfoil, refuse sacks and salt (plus some herbs and spices). Only one toilet roll supplied per bathroom, so do bring more! The downstairs bathroom has a very weak flush, I would strongly recommend using the upstairs one for anything more than a wee. Wi-fi router is in the kitchen, so if you have teenagers don't put them in the smaller bedroom on the top floor as the signal doesn't reach well that far. Mobile signal worked for EE on 4g fortunately. In the local area there are some lovely walks through the woods to the right of the property - the public footpath goes all the way alongside the river (ignore the private sign, that's for cars not pedestrians). In the village we visited the deli few times (lovely food, and a great breakfast) and the pub for dinner (also delicious).

Paddle boarding on the river walking in the woods. And for those music fans a piano, ok for pop and ragtime. Plenty of separate space throughout the house.

  • "We loved thd house but felt it was tired, lots of chipped cups and plates."

We were a but shocked at the size of the fridge freezer fir a house that slept 8 adults. The location was great for the river access We took a paddleboard and had great fun. Parking was a bit hard because again we had 8 adults in 4 cars. Host was brilliant. Would def go again.

We are glad you had such a good time. We will check through the crockery. We have never had a complaint before about the size of the fridge/freezer before and there is parking for 3 cars as stated on the website. Property Owner

  • "When we arrived the first things I saw were dirt and hairs in the hallway and hairs and food on the kitchen floor, work tops and dead flies and yet my son had been told on arrival a few minutes earlier it had just been cleaned!"

I spent an hour and a half cleaning and sterilising all the worktops, bedside cabinets, tables , table lamps, etc. and the cloth was filthy between each item. . There was dirt and cobwebs on the window sills in the twin bedroom where my poor granddaughter who was just recovering from a serious illness was expected to sleep. Covid precautions were actually non existent. The one saving grace were the comfortable beds and clean linen. A relief after the rest of the surfaces . There are several rugs dotted about the house on slippery floors and a couple with turned up edges. Tripping hazards. Also between the kitchen and laundry room there was a piece of loose wood being used as a floor connector and I tripped over it three times and my husband did twice before propping it up against a worktop! It should have been fixed down. The door to the back patio has a bolt that only one member of our party could actually push in as it doesn’t fit the warped door properly. Finally to our horror when my husband decided to check that nothing had been left in any drawers in the laundry room he opened one easily reached by a child only to discover it contained Paracetamol, Buscopan and various other medications. This experience was such a disappointment when it could have been really wonderful in such a special spot. However, shabby chic can be charming and would have been but not dirty shabby chic.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, we take this very seriously. Please accept our apologies for the issues you have encountered during your stay; we are rectifying these as a matter of priority and thank you for bringing them to our attention. Property Owner

  • "The house was lovely in a quiet village."

Could do with some up dating. The down stairs bathroom was a little to old fashioned for us .The bedrooms down stairs could do with refreshing perhaps a new coat of paint. Bathroom up stairs was to small to have a wash in and if you are tall mind your head .The main bedroom was fine the bed was to soft for us ,but it was nice to see the stars at through the sky lights. But in all a good base to explore out and about and be warned the roads are very narrow. The village is about 20 mins walk ,the pubs are the dolphin which is very friendly. The ship is in noss mayo ,you can get to it when the tide goes out and also the swan but dont get stuck there when the tide comes in or you will have to walk around (it's a very long walk ).There is also no chip shop in the village you will have to drive to one it's about 15mins away it's called the Brixton chip shop. Morrisons and Tesco are also a drive away but there is a coop in the village it's only small .

We were entranced by the view, watching yachts come and go in the estuary. We visited for a long weekend to go to a wedding and really didn't do justice to this lovely house. However we did manage one of the walks recommended in the welcome pack. Amazing. Ended up at the Swan in Noss Mayo - a perfect moment. We were all very comfortable in the house. It was brilliant to be able to launch kayaks straight off the private jetty and the views from the balcony upstairs are absolutely stunning. Walking to the Dolphin pub is a great way to work up an appetite and the Co Op, bakery and butcher provide any ingredients necessary for self catering - the pastries from the bakery and the sausage rolls from the butcher are a must-try! We are delighted to have found this lovely property and can thoroughly recommend it.

Dirty marks on carpet, throws and dining chair seats. Ceiling lights look as though they haven't been washed for months. One bedroom, only hanging space was coat hooks on wall, second bedroom only hanging space was coat stand. Lower bathroom no mixer tap and water extremely hot. Could do with warning sign for children. Fantastic view.

Thank you for your feedback, that is very helpful for me to improve the house for guests' holiday experience. The carpet is being cleaned to remove the marks and I'm on the lookout for a attractive new rug! Property Owner

Facilities were excellent everything you could ask for and the little touch of a vase of flowers, biscuits and eggs from the chickens at the back made you feel a little bit special. Fantastic views over the river and very relaxing. 3 great pubs almost on your doorstep (ferry ride to Noss Mayo and 10 minute walk to 2 of them and the one in Newton Ferrers was a 15 minute walk). Mothecombe beach was our favourite. A 15 minute drive away, although the cafe at the car park was very over priced, obviously has a captive audience, so take your own refreshments.

The property

This is a first and second floor apartment, one of two in a detached house in trees beside the river ¾ mile from the centre of Newton Ferrers.

Along a pretty and bumpy no through road, it is an idyllic spot for relaxation and enjoying the scenery.

From the shared garden path, head into the entrance hall where you can make sweet music on the piano.

From here, stairs take you up to the roomy open plan living space where you can watch the smart TV or gaze over the river view whilst you eat at the table.

On fine days, open the glass door to the balcony where the water shines through the oak trees.

You will find two of your bedrooms on this floor, or head up to the next level and two more bedrooms under the eaves with little glimpses of the river.

On this upper level is a lovely quiet sitting room for reading or watching TV.

Head outside to your enclosed terrace at the back where you can fire up the barbecue and eat alfresco.

This is great walking country, with the National Trust woods on the doorstep or the Coast Path for admiring dramatic scenery and strolling the historic Lord Revelstoke’s carriage drive.

Sit out at a riverside inn in Newton Ferrers or Noss Mayo to watch the life on the river.

For more activity, try paddleboarding or wakeboarding, with equipment available to hire, hire a boat which you can moor outside the apartment, play tennis or go riding.

Mothecombe is a fabulous beach which stars in lots of movies, including Sense and Sensibility.

Galanda Treetops is aptly named, a scenic location with leafy loveliness.

About the location

NEWTON FERRERS

Plymouth 8 miles.

A tranquil, picturesque village in the South Hams area of Devon, on a bend of the River Yealm leading up from the South Devon coast (1 mile). The perfect haven for sailors, for those who love messing about near water and for those who appreciate stunning and civilised countryside. There is a local butcher, chemist, post office and grocer in Newton Ferrers and an organic farm shop just two miles away. The village pub, with fantastic views across the water towards Noss Mayo and the creek, serves good food and drink. The area is blessed with many walks that meander along the waterside and across the fields, while to the north Dartmoor's high tors and open spaces beckon those who love wild country. The city of Plymouth with its shops, Marine Aquarium and Barbican quayside area is just 8 miles away while beautiful Totnes with its 'alternative' view on life is a must. If the beach rather than boats is what you seek, you won't do better than the beautiful sands at Mothecombe and Bigbury just a few miles down the road. Both are accessible by road or boat from Newton Ferrers. There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby.
