  • "There were several faults."

The upstairs lavatory would not flush away solids without assistance from a brush despite adequate water flow. The upstairs wash hand basin hot water only trickled. Headroom in the upstairs bathroom was very limited, and a person of around 1.8m could not stand upright to use the lavatory. The shower was difficult to use due to the lack of headroom and the sloping ceiling. The AGA smelt strongly of oil, and windows needed to be opened when the room was occupied. Headroom in the downstairs lavatory was also limited due to the angle of the staircase. There was no handrail on the upper staircase, which is a safety concern.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback following your stay at Old Sunday School. We are sorry to hear that aspects of the property did not meet your expectations. We would like to reassure you that the property has very recently undergone a full refurbishment over a three-month period, including the installation of a new, fully fitted bathroom including a new cistern. We are therefore dismayed to learn of the flushing concerns you experienced as this has not posed a problem previously. The wash hand basin has a mixer tap and the handle requires adjustment to achieve the desired water flow. That said, we have already sourced a plumber to assess whether a pump can be installed to further improve water pressure. Old Sunday School is a characterful and quirky building, and due to its nature, there are areas of restricted headroom, particularly within the upstairs bathroom. We do aim to reflect these features accurately within the property description and accompanying photographs so guests can make an informed decision prior to booking. Regarding the AGA, this is turned off when the property is unoccupied. When it is relit, it can emit a temporary oil smell for a short period. We would like to reassure you that the AGA is serviced every six months and this is a normal occurrence during ignition. We appreciate the suggestion of a hand rail on the upper stair case and will look to have one fitted to enhance guest safety. We are sorry that these aspects impacted your stay; however, we do hope you were still able to enjoy the beautiful setting in which Old Sunday School is located. Property Owner

  • "We had a beautiful stayed in the Old Sunday School over Easter."

It is in the perfect location to explore both Devon and Cornwall. The house has everything you need for a week away. It is beautiful and warm when you walk in the front door with the heat from the aga on. There is a fire in the middle floor as well as the normal heating. It wasn't clear from the listing but there is a downstairs toilet so you don't need to go all the way to the top floor. Something to note is the garden is enclosed but is not secure, so we could only take the dog out on the lead. There is a brilliant pub behind the house that does great food and is very welcoming. We loved our stay and would definitely go back.

The property

Nearest town - Kilkhampton 6.7 miles.

Old Sunday School rests in the peaceful village of Welcombe, near Kilkhampton, offering a welcoming and characterful retreat set across three floors, ideal for families or friends seeking a quieter pace of life close to the North Cornwall and Devon border.

On the ground floor, the kitchen/diner is equipped with all the essentials for easy self-catering, whether it’s a hearty breakfast before heading out or a relaxed supper at day’s end.

Loo with wash basin.

Upstairs, the first-floor sitting room provides a cosy spot to unwind, with a woodburning stove adding warmth and atmosphere after days spent exploring the surrounding coastline and rolling countryside.

The top floor hosts two thoughtfully arranged bedrooms, a king-size and a twin, along with a bathroom featuring a bath and shower over, offering practical comfort for couples, friends or small families.

Outside, an enclosed rear lawn provides a pleasant place to sit out and enjoy the fresh air, while off-road parking ensures an easy arrival.

There’s no need to cook at this cottage unless you want to, since the ancient thatched pub which serves up excellent food is just 100 yards from the door, you may have worked up an appetite by walking down the valley to the cove – or you can just drive down and park by the beach.

The picturesque fishing village of Clovelly is just a short drive away which occupies a secluded, cliffside position and attracts visitors from the world over - A pedestrianised, cobbled street winds its way down the hillside passing the colourful gardens that characterise the village's pretty, whitewashed cottages, on its way down to the sheltered harbour.

Local shops, pubs and restaurants crowd the working harbour from where the local fishermen show their daily catch of mackerel and check their lobster pots.

With the beaches, cafés and scenic coastal paths of Bude within driving distance, Old Sunday School makes a charming base for discovering North Cornwall, whether you’re seeking bracing sea air, countryside walks or simply a peaceful place to switch off.
