The property

Rope Cottage is a beautifully preserved Grade II listed former rope maker’s cottage, quietly tucked away in Bridport, Dorset.

Rich in character, it offers an inviting retreat for couples and walkers looking to explore the Jurassic Coast while staying somewhere truly authentic.

Step inside and the cottage’s heritage is immediately apparent.

The living room is centred around a woodburning stove, making it an ideal place to relax after a day exploring the coast or countryside.

Coloured light filter through the large stained glass doors, enhancing the sense of history and atmosphere, while a dining table provides space for leisurely meals and evenings spent planning the next day’s adventures.

The kitchen is compact yet well equipped and sits alongside a convenient cloakroom, making thoughtful use of the cottage’s traditional footprint.

The accommodation is arranged over three floors, in keeping with a property of this age and style.

On the first floor, a twin bedroom sits alongside a spacious and modern shower room, complete with a generous walk‑in shower — perfect after long coastal walks or days on the beach.

Above, tucked into the eaves, the main bedroom occupies the loft space, where a king‑size bed and skylight window create a peaceful hideaway beneath the Dorset sky.

To the rear of the cottage, the properties are arranged around a shared communal courtyard, offering a quiet outdoor space that reflects the historic character of this former rope‑making setting.

The cottage’s central location makes it easy to enjoy Bridport on foot.

Independent shops, galleries and cafés line the streets, complemented by a thriving food scene offering everything from relaxed street food to locally sourced seasonal menus.

The lively twice‑weekly market and artisan food quarter are close by, while the Electric Palace — hosting a packed programme of film, theatre, music and comedy — and the vibrant Bucky Doo Square add to the town’s cultural appeal.

Palmers Brewery is also within easy reach, offering tours and tastings for visitors keen to sample a true taste of Dorset.

For walkers, scenic routes begin nearby, including the much‑loved climb up Colmer’s Hill for sweeping panoramic views across the countryside.

Just a mile and a half away is West Bay, with its picturesque harbour, beach and dramatic cliffs.

Seafood lovers may wish to venture a little further along the coast to Hive Beach Café, a firm favourite for freshly landed local seafood enjoyed with wide‑reaching sea views.

Rope Cottage is a warm and characterful base, ideal for those seeking history, walkable convenience and easy access to Dorset’s coastline, all wrapped within a genuinely traditional home.

BRIDPORT

Lyme Regis 10 miles; West Bay 2 miles.

The attractive market town of Bridport grew up around the River Brit, and was shaped by its extensive history of rope and net making. The long, wide streets and alleyways between the houses were once where the flax strands were twisted into rope, while today those streets are filled with an interesting variety of shops, restaurants and inns. Bridport’s market is regularly featured on the River Cottage TV programme. 2 miles south of Bridport is the dramatic Jurassic coast at West Bay, now a World Heritage Site, home to the backdrop for TV's Harbour Lights and the coastal setting for popular Broadchurch, whilst the picturesque resort of Lyme Regis is within 10 miles. A superb base for exploring wonderful West Dorset.

Note: The age of the property does mean the stairs are steeper and narrower than modern homes, and they may not be suitable for the elderly, infirm or young children - please bear in mind when booking.
Note: Non-enclosed, shared courtyard garden.
