  • "Very comfy cottage with a great view."

Positives first, newly renovated with modern appliances. Comfy bed and the wood burner is great. Dog box is a great idea too. Negatives, I would say the cleaner could have done a better job. There was broken glass under the sofa and dust that should have been cleaned up. Bit picky but there was still sawdust in the bathroom cabinets after fitting. Also kitchen could do with less bowls and more oven proof dishes. Cooking oil, salt and pepper would help too. A welcome pack I feel would also be a good idea, specially for visitors if they have traveled a long way and just want a brew before nipping to the Coop. We brought everything we needed but it would have been a nice gesture. Overall I loved the cottage but felt it had been renovated in about 2 days, thrown together and filled with pots and pans without too much thought for what people really use on a regular basis. Area is great with all the amenities you would ever need.

  • "From the minute we arrived at the cottage, we knew we were going to fall in love with it."

I had a quick glance over the reviews but unless they are consistent, I don't pay too much attention. Yes, it took me a few minutes to get the car parked, but I did it! I have a Nissan Juke and it fitted in the space perfectly. So we enter the cottage and the dogs go off for a sniff....straight to the care box provided by the hosts!! We loved this sentiment. Unpacked the car and settled straight in. The sun was shining, considering we'd just had weeks of rain! Husband read the welcome folder and started planning our walks. I felt immediately at home, as did my dogs. We always take blankets to dog friendly stays but there were some provided if required. Another sweet touch. Everything available to us were perfect. All furniture was comfortable and the wood burner was my favourite touch. I would definitely recommend this stay to anyone and everyone. Great value for money. The surrounding facilities are great. The Cove pub on the front of Chesil beach is fab and also dog friendly. The walks are brilliant. And most of all, people were incredibly friendly. Super tasty big portions of fish and chips up the road at Salty Towers. We couldn't fault a thing. Only 1 thing I'd agree with, with someone else's review would be a little side lamp in the living room. But it didn't affect a thing. We will return with our dogs and we cannot wait to.ezplore more of Portland. The hosts have put a lot of thought into all aspects of their cottage and we thank them for it.

Many thanks for your well considered review. We have tried to make it a great cottage. But as in some of the previous reviews you can’t keep everyone happy all the time! Property Owner

  • "Fisherman’s cottage is beautiful!"

We had a week long relaxing stay with a stunning view of the sea, comfy beds and a wonderful shower. We parked in the car park at the top of the road - it was a nice touch that the parking was free too! And ignore the moany reviews - the distance from the car park is not far at all (we were there in torrential rain and it didn’t bother us!) The only thing missing that we would have loved on arrival was a welcome pack - after a four and a half hour drive through storms a cup of tea would have been perfect! Too tip - Tuesdays go down to cohesion beach and watch the SAS helicopter trainging. My goodness is was awesome - they’re fearless! We will be back! ❤️

  • "We loved the cottage."

However, we were bringing my 85 year old mother away for a few days and there should be more explanation of the layout. She is fit and active and could manage the steep stairs once a day and she had the master bedroom so she had the ensuite but anyone of her age less mobile would have struggled. We loved the decor (although some side lights would make it cosier in the evenings) and had 2 lovely afternoons on the terrace. Again, some outdoor bench cushions and a small parasol would enhance that experience - we got too hot and too uncomfortable after a short while. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay - although we had to park nearly a mile away on the 2nd day (Bank Holiday weekend). If you accept the parking issue limitation, it is a great location and would recommend for fit, active holiday makers.

Thanks for the review. We are looking into how best to provide shade. In terms of layout this is a period cottage and has a staircase that is better than most in Portland. I broke my ankle and foot (on holiday elsewhere!) and still managed it easily . For other readers of reviews if you ever have any questions in advance please message me so I can help. I think it’s unfair if you marked me down on mobility issues for an 85 year old. Property Owner

  • "The cottage itself was clean and comfortable with everything you needed kitchen wise and tv (sky a big bonus)."

Bed comfortable and lovely bedding and towels quaintly decorated with good wooden floors. Negatives Nightmare to park and had to park quite a distance to get a spot as top road restricted parking. Sofa and chairs old and saggy needs updating. Dining chairs like old school chairs in the 1960’s uncomfortable and ugly. Outside decking area not been maintained at all and table about to disintegrate. Weeds overtaking and needs attention and the metal chairs and bench rotten with rust. Such a shame about the neglect as it could be much nicer with a little attention to detail

Thanks for the feedback. I have asked to make it clearer around the parking in terms of the listing. I will replace the chairs - they are only a year old but clearly the salt has got to them. Will update table too. Just one piece of feedback, the sofa was new in April! Hopefully once I’ve fixed some of these issues you will return. Property Owner

  • "On arrival you could tell someone had been smoking previously in the property when letting our dogs out into the garden there were several cigarette butts in a container ."

The blind in the master bedroom had several marks on it (black out blinds would be better) and the mattress is extremely thin and uncomfortable. A used towel was in the side unit in the twin room .These concerns were raised via a phone call to the number in the folder and would be address on change over day .It is on a very steep hill and on the 1st night did park outside the property it is tight as mentioned ,after that we decided to park at either top or bottom of road .We felt disappointed as it didn't have a homely feel to it , we have stayed in a few cottages over the last few years and never felt this before ,

Thanks for the feedback Lisa. Much appreciated. Sorry you felt it wasn’t homely although others have said otherwise. Leaving a used towel is poor and I will tell the cleaners to do better. Smoking is not allowed and I’m sorry this impacted your stay. I hope you liked Portland in general. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was fabulous and so well equipped."

There were some really lovely touches for our arrival and we thought the "dog box" was such a lovely thought. We stayed with our two dogs and they were made to feel very welcome - the enclosed area at the back is perfect for the dogs with some great views. The cottage was so comfortable with lovely bedding, towels and a great walk in shower. Portland is a great place to stay for easy access to other places in Dorset and we found the locals very friendly. Highly recommended for a dog friendly stay and many thanks to the owners for their kindness and thoughtfulness

The property

Fisherman's Cottage, King Street is a lovely semi-detached cottage with amazing sea views, resting in the coastal village of Fortuneswell, Portland near Weymouth in Dorset.

With attractions including World Heritage site of Chesil Beach nearby, this pet-friendly cottage is ideal for friends and family looking for a getaway to the Jurassic coasts of Dorset & Devon.

The kitchen is incredibly well equipped with a Smeg cooker and Bosch appliances.

In autumn and winter, hearty meals can be enjoyed at the dining table, before you cosy up on the old leather sofa and chairs and catch up with a good book or play some board games, as the woodburning stove warms your feet.

When sleep calls, freshen up in the ground-floor shower room, before catching your rest in either a well-presented double or a twin bedroom.

Outside, make the most of the sunshine by dining alfresco in the enclosed decked space which is a sun trap.

With magnificent sea views; Portland is in fact the second sunniest place in England!

When you are ready to explore, head out into the seaside village of Fortuneswell, where you will find a supermarket within 100 metres for all of your essentials, as well as a selection of pubs and eateries, with options including The Cove House Inn, The Flat Café, and Quiddles Café.

And of course, don’t forget Salty Towers, the local award winning fish and chip shop just 20 metres away.

For a more special meal try the Crab Shack which is about a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive, with food all sourced locally.

The property is close to the impressive Chesil Beach, ideal for walking and watersports options are incredible at Portland Harbour, what with it being the home of the London Olympics sailing events.

Weymouth, a 10 minute car journey or bus ride away, is famous for its Georgian harbour, and restaurants, and the beach has recently been voted the best in the UK.

You can also visit Dorchester, 30 minutes away, where you will find a wide range of shops and amenities as you might expect from the County town.

It’s also the home of Maiden Castle, the UK’s largest hill fort.

Perhaps Portland’s (and Dorset’s) crowning glory are the walks.

It’s a rambler’s paradise with routes ranging from easy and flat along Chesil Beach to Weymouth or to Portland Bill or for the fitter, more demanding walks over to heritage sites like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.

Throw in some fossil hunting and you can see why Portland is the start of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, so why not lace up your walking boots and enjoy a picturesque hike?

There is so much to be explored with a stay at Fisherman's Cottage, King Street.
