“We had a wonderful stay in probably the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed in.”

Plenty of kitchen equipment, games, books, CDs and DVDs available; spotlessly clean and warm and cosy. The cottage is perfectly located for exploring the coastal towns and villages and the beautiful beaches in the area. Hive beach was our favourite beach locally. The cottage is on a fairly narrow country road and we were a little surprised at the fairly constant stream of farm traffic up and down the lane, travelling at some speed. it is not a major issue as such but something to be aware of if you have small children or dogs. The small garden surrounding the Old Smithy is enclosed by a low wall and gate. Bridport is a very nice town though the twice weekly market was a little disappointing. There are plenty of good takeaways in Bridport and some fantastic restaurants. We recommend the Seaside Boarding House restaurant at Burton Bradstock, exceptional food and service in beautiful surroundings. We tend not to re-visit places as there is so much of the world to explore however we would have no hesitation in returning to the Old Smithy and thoroughly recommend it.

The property

An attractive, semi-detached, former farmer's cottage set in a peaceful rural location, close to the tiny West Dorset hamlet of Dottery, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With stunning countryside views across the neighbouring fields, The Old Smithy has been renovated and equipped to a good standard, offering warm and welcoming accommodation for small groups seeking the sights of this stunning area.

The cottage features a wonderful woodburning stove in the comfy sitting room, together with a galley kitchen, a separate dining room, two good-sized bedrooms and a family bathroom to offer plenty of space for your whole group.

Enjoy refreshments outside whilst taking in the charming country views, or take a stroll or cycle along one of the numerous local byways.

This pretty cottage provides visitors with a perfect base for exploring West Dorset, with its picture postcard thatched cottage villages and stunning coastal seascapes.

A short drive will take you to the bustling market town of Bridport, featured in the River Cottage TV series, and no trip to this area is complete without visiting the scenic harbourside village of West Bay, TV’s Broadchurch, a great place to try sea fishing.

An idyllic West Dorset country retreat, perfect all year round.
