  • "The fat itself is spacious and comfortable."

It looks as if carpets and the p ageing sofas (as pictured) may have been replaced, perhaps after previous comments about these items in the property. Otherwise, the property had an uncared for feel. More attention needs to be paid to preparation before new renters move in. 1. Mattress covers are tatty, thin and old. Noted when the sheets had to be washed. 2. One of the bed boards in the 1st floor bedroom is hanging off the base. 3. Below sink kitchen cabinets need sorting - full of all sorts of painting and cleaning products that people have bought over time. Some empty, some half used - a real mess. Very old dustpan that looks as if it has been used for decorating, not sweeping up. 4. Kitchen cupboards - contents all over the place, where previous visitors have left them. No care or input evident in wanting to present the place well. 4. General dirtiness - dusty and grimy throughout. Kitchen and other surfaces needed wiping and definitely kitchen cupboard interiors/exteriors had not been cleaned for a while. Dirty and old cooker, including interior. 5. Similarly the shower - noone had addressed the build up of limescale for a long time. I cleaned out the shower tray as I was not confident it had been cleaned and was hygienic. Toilet in this room had a half broken seat which broke fully while we were there. It was ill fitting and there was a lot of dust and grime behind the loo itself, alongside all the skirtings etc. 6. Both landing night lights had run out of rechargeable batteries. There was no recharger, which makes the whole idea a non-starter! We left a bathroom light all night every night . My impression was that prior to our arrival the only thing that had been done was to change the linen. The whole flat hadn't been thoroughly cleaned for quite a while. This is not my normal experience with Sykes' properties, which are normally meticulously presented for new renters. Finally despite the welcome booklet suggesting the owner was responsive to contact, he does not respond to texts. I called the owner to make sure he knew about the toilet seat. He did not even thank me for letting him know! Not great. Your records will show you that I have stayed in many Sykes properties all over the country. I have never had caused to even think of submitting anything but glowing reports on the care and cleanliiness of the rentals. I am sorry that I feel I have to do this now. The owner needs to improve the maintenance and cleaning regime quickly and effectively. If you can let me know this has happened and you have seen any improvements the owner makes yourself, I will be satisfied that sending this feedback has been taken seriously. Please publish because I noticed on booking that there were already comments on your website about the state of the provision at the property. Sadly at the moment I feel I have to add to these. Thank you. Elizabeth Kemp

  • "We enjoyed our stay and would come again."

The apartment is looking a bit tired and we had to do a little bit of cleaning when we arrived, but otherwise it was fine. Owner was friendly and helpful.

  • "Can't fault the location and ease of parking."

Property a bit dated but very comfortable. All modern appliances and plenty of hot water. A little grip was there was only 3 mugs, plenty of cups but being northerners we like a mug of tea ;-) A good base for exploring Dorset's coastal towns and surrounding areas. Would book again if going down to Swanage/Dorset.

Thank you for the lovely feedback George. We had plenty of mugs, sometimes embarrassed guests don't tell us if they have broken mugs. We will replace! Come back again Property Owner

  • "Pleasantly surprised at some of the extras provided."

Most of the expected kitchen utensils/equipment as expected. Found the cupboards rather disorganised and overfilled with all sorts of odd, mismatched crockery.

Thank you for your feedback Deborah! We have declutrered! Property Owner

It is somewhat dated but warm, comfortable, spacious and very clean. John, the owner, was friendly and helpful. We will book again, especially if John can get the third bedroom into use.

Thankyou for your kind feedback our next project is to update the kitchen as soon as we can Property Owner

  • "The property was as described in the listing."

It is a very short walk to the beach and the town. The owner is very approachable and helpful. The decor has a deliberate period feel. Which might not be to everybody’s taste. But the amenities make up for it. The heating worked great. As did all the appliances we used. The Wi-Fi did blip on Netflix from time to time. The cleanliness of the rooms was good. Unfortunately the shower still had some sand left from the previous occupant. Our stay was whilst Storm Eunice happened and we were comfortable and found it easy to live in. If you have a dog or children there is a park 5 minutes walk which is by the cricket club. As the streets are all pavement and no grass. The property allows you both the luxuary of leaving the car or using it as a base to go further a field.

  • "Please note the poor feedback rating we are giving is for Sykes Cottages and in no way for the holiday accommodation and it is unfortunate that the feedback form Sykes cottages have sent asks for feedback on both."

. Firstly, The flat was lovely and John the owner was helpful, friendly and very welcoming (he welcomed us with a lovely selection of local produce when we arrived). Any questions or small issues we had during our stay (such as needing a light bulb changed or wanting to know how to use the heating) were quickly dealt with. We were very pleasantly surprised by how big the accommodation was and it contained everything you could need for your stay including a great selection of books, DVDs and games. The only negative was for Sykes Cottages misleading information on their website which said there were 3 bedrooms and it was only when we queried this, as part of the description didn't tie up so we had our doubts and they confirmed it was only 2 rooms which meant our 4th adult relative couldn't stay with us. After we had pointed out their mistake they refunded the booking fee but it still didn't cover the quarter of the cost that would have been paid by the other member of our party and the most annoying part is they still have not changed it on their website as it still says at time of writing 'Moving upstairs to the second floor is where you will find the other two bedrooms, both comfortable bedrooms,' Please be aware there is a 3rd bedroom but it is currently unusable as it needs some work doing but as long as people are aware they can just leave the door closed on it or just use it for storing your empty luggage and drying any clothes on the rack in there like we did (but there is a tumble dryer there as well). So to summarise, if you are looking for a lovely quiet place to stay, literally 4 minutes from North beach with all the facilities you could need and a helpful landlord look no further (but don't believe Sykes Cottages descriptions). Despite the issues we had with Sykes Cottages, we would happily recommend John and his lovely flat to friends and family.

  • "Loved the apartment."

Very clean and well equipped. Much bigger than we expected. Lovely quiet part of the town. Hosts were very welcoming and gave us a welcome pack on arrival. My only suggestion for improvement would be to upgrade the furniture in the lounge as it was outdated and uncomfortable. Nevertheless we had a great stay. Thank you.

  • "Swanage itself is an absolutely stunning with lot to see and do."

Hillveiw is well situated and had everything you could need but is very dated. The double bed was in fact two singles and not ideal for a couple. Wallpaper was hanging off in the third bedroom and when we had a bath, water came through the kitchen ceiling. The Belling cooker was from the ark and took forever to cook the most basic meals. We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday and will revisit Swanage but for almost £1600 for 2 weeks would have expected more from the property. Was also advertised with a sea Veiw, had to squint at the small gap between the two properties across the street to see the slightest bit of what a think was the sea. Very poor for the price.

  • "The property was only barely adequate."

Updating and modernisation was urgently required. No instructions issued for use of appliances etc. The apartment was dark and quite depressing. Shower facilities badly needing updating. The ony thing in its favour was the proximity to the seafront which was perfect.

Many thanks for you feedback, we have fed your comments back to the owner in order to maintain our property standards. Your views are as valued as your initial booking so that we can keep providing the best UK holiday experience. Your points will also be reviewed to ensure that our property descriptions are accurate and not misleading. Property Owner

About the location

SWANAGE

Wareham 9.7 miles; Poole 20 miles.

The small, family-friendly seaside resort of Swanage is situated at the eastern end of Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast, on the celebrated Isle of Purbeck and is probably best known for its wonderful, gently shelving golden sands. The little town offers visitors plenty of shops, good pubs and restaurants, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood, and is also well known for its annual jazz festival, which takes place each July. The attractive, Victorian wooden pier offers a great place for a stroll or try fishing, and often used a departure point for divers, it’s a wonderful place to watch the world pass by. The historic Swanage Railway has its terminus in the town and regular nostalgic steam engine trips take tourists for a picturesque 6-mile journey, chugging through lovely countryside to stop just beyond the romantic ruin of Corfe Castle. Nearby Durlston Country Park offers a lovely day out with spectacular coastal walks, dolphin spotting and wildlife watching, together with comfortable viewing points and a well-stocked cafe for a treat after all the fresh air. Take the short drive to Studland, which has one of the finest beaches in the country, surrounded by heathland, together with the regular chain ferry, which crosses the mouth of Poole Harbour to Sandbanks. This truly is a delightful holiday destination at any time of the year.
